Jennifer Lee & Chris Buck Have No Idea What to Do for 'Frozen 2'
If you're one of those Frozen fans who is excited to see a sequel from Walt Disney Animation Studios, you may want to sit down. While there have been rumblings of Frozen 2 from Idina Menzel, one of the film's stars, co-directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck currently have no idea what to do about a sequel. Speaking with BuzzFeed, the duo have confirmed that there is not yet a sequel in the works. There's no script, no development and not even an idea. Addressing the rampant rumors, Buck said, "It’s been in the press that we are doing it, and we would ask each other, 'Are we?'" Well, that doesn't sound very promising.
It sounds like the problem is cracking the story, and Lee says it's not easy:
"It all comes down to the story. Like with the short, it was so daunting until we found the story. Then it was all of the things it usually is and we were thinking of every emotion and moment and feeling. I think that’s all we can do. Until we find our way into what’s next, emotionally, it will feel too big. We just finished the short two weeks ago. One year ago, it was a lot to even think about doing a short. We were quite tired. We don’t really know what it’s like to stop for a minute and think about what we want to do next."
Considering Frozen only just came out at the end of 2013, it would be impressive of Buck and Lee had already come up with an idea and were hard at work. But that's simply not the case, especially since they quickly put together the musical animated short that will play in front of Cinderella this coming weekend with the main characters of the film returning with some new original music (watch the teaser for the short right here). And for now, Buck admits that they have no idea what to do for a sequel, "There is a bit of that drop-the-mic thing. Just go, [drops mic] ‘I don’t know what else to do.'" We're just glad they're not hastily rushing it just because of the demand, but we hope a good story will come along. But even if an idea comes around, this is an animated movie, so it'll be years before we see a sequel either way.
