Kevin Smith is Now Shooting 'Mallrats 2' Next Instead of 'Clerks 3'

Mallrats

Back in March, when Kevin Smith merely teased the potential for a sequel to his 1995 comedy Mallrats, he laid out his schedule for the next year and a half. Clerks III was supposed to be the director's next film, and the confirmed development of Mallrats 2 was aiming to start production in the spring of 2016. However, some production logistics have changed up the schedule a bit. Speaking on his own Hollywood Babble-On podcast (via SlashFilm), Smith revealed that Mallrats 2 will now be his next film, due to the availability of a real shopping mall that they'll have free reign to use before it gets demolished. Read on!

Smith explains how the scheduling change came about, but beware, because there's a spoiler:

We’ve been putting together 'Mallrats 2'….It’s been a real, like 'Blues Brothers' ‘We’re putting the band back together, on a mission from Smod.’ So this week, we had a lot of activity behind the scenes as well and it looks like we might — it’s 'Mallrats' and so we require a big old empty mall, and it would be nice if we could do things to the mall. So if you had a mall and the mall was eventually going away, that would let you like blow the f—ing mall up, which happens in the third act.

So we found a place that we can go to and in order to get to that mall before it goes away, we were talking about initially shooting Clerks 3 this summer and then we were going to get to 'Mallrats' in the beginning of 2016. And then it jumped into 2015, where we were going to shoot Clerks and then hopefull'y Mallr'ats before the end of the year. But now, based on a f—ing mall that we all dig that will be going away, the priority has become 'Mallrats.' So the next f—ing movie I’m making is 'Mallrats 2.' No word on Batfleck yet…but it would be fun to see if we could get him.

So there you have it. Mallrats 2 is coming first, and Smith just confirmed some more of the cast:

You may notice that with those last few updates, the numbers have changed with regards to how many more people Smith has to round up for the cast. Smith indicates above that he's hoping to get Ben Affleck back for the sequel as well, but he's pretty busy nowadays. Otherwise, I'm not sure what other cast members Smith is rounding up. Could they maybe just be cast members from other films in the View Askewniverse instead of just Mallrats? Since the sequel is now next in line, surely we'll find out more very soon. In the meantime, we'll just have to be more patient for Clerks III. Sound good?

I honestly had no need for this when it first was announced. But the fact that Smith is getting damn near everyone who was in the first movie, it's certainly making me re-evaluate it. Michael Rooker???

I was starting to worry it had only been like days since his last update for this pile.

Oh hey, Kevin Smith releasing 'news' of his own project! Almost like yet another update on a project that hasn't even filmed one scene yet. That's weird. He never does thinly-veiled self promotion like that. Wait a sec...
    • ColtNoir
why wouldn't you promote it? that seems like the logical choice for someone who isn't exactly always backed by big studios who does the marketing for him...shame on him for attempting to generate buzz.
