'Neuromancer' Movie Find Chinese Financiers, But Without Natali

Neuromancer Movie

We've heard this before. But hopefully this time something actually happens. Straight out of the Cannes Market, Screen Daily is reporting that Chinese collective C2M Media Group will "co-develop and co-finance" the sci-fi adaptation of Neuromancer, along with UK sales team GFM Films. The interesting bit is that filmmaker Vincenzo Natali, who was attached for years and years developing this, is apparently no longer involved (as he is not mentioned anywhere) but they do mention: "producer Lucas Foster is currently in talks with new writers and a director on the project." We'll have to wait to find out who that might be.

Way back in 2011, we reported that this Neuromancer adaptation had secured financing then. "Seven Arts Pictures and GFM Films have secured early sales from distributors," we wrote, but obviously so much time has passed much has changed. Screen Daily now says that the new group "C2M will collaborate with GFM not only in financing, but also in script development, film production and global distribution." It sounds like the Chinese really want to have their hand in this, which may be especially poignant for a seminal cyber-thriller like this. I'm still curious to see how it all turns out, and who they end up hiring to write/direct.

"William Gibson's books have been very prescient on the topic of Super Intelligence, which people variously call Machine Intelligence or A.I. As we surrender more and more of our thinking and imagining over to software, we lose something important and tangible in ourselves. Neuromancer tells the story of that (near) future."

I'm sure we'll find out more about this new version soon. Lucas Foster (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Jumper, Street Kings, Law Abiding Citizen) is producing. Neuromancer, based on William Gibson's 1984 novel, is the story of a washed-up computer hacker hired by a mysterious employer to work on the ultimate hack. "Case was the hottest computer cowboy cruising the information superhighway… Then he double-crossed the wrong people, who caught up with him in a big way--and burned the talent out of his brain, micron by micron." I'm a bit sad to see Vincenzo Natali go, but hopefully they'll find someone just as talented to bring this story to life. It needs someone with visual expertise yet also a talented storyteller. Stay tuned for the latest updates.

Natali would have been icing. This could still be great.

I read a portion of Natali's screenplay on another site and it was pretty damned awesome. Sad that he didn't get to do it.

    Now how about "Snow Crash"?
