Non-Retired Kevin Smith May Be Working on a Sequel to 'Mallrats'

Even though writer/director Kevin Smith was once leaning towards retirement from filmmaking, the past couple years have actually seen him take on more projects at once than he's ever had before. He's going to finish his horror trilogy that he revealed last summer, which already began with Tusk last year, will continue with Yoga Hosers on June 1st this summer, and end with Moose Jaws sometime next year. There's also Clerks III shooting this May, and the holiday horror flick Anti-Claus on the way as well. And now Smith seems to be hinting at a sequel to the biggest box office bomb of his career after all those are done. Read on!
Here's the update Kevin Smith posted on Facebook today:
"Saw some websites are reporting CLERKS III will be my last flick. I did say this at one point, but Tusk changed all that. Now, the next 2 years are booked. We shoot CLERKS III in May. The HIT SOMEBODY hockey miniseries finally follows in the fall, shooting September to Christmas 2015. Then in Feb/March 2016, we tackle MOOSE JAWS and ANTI-CLAUS. And after that? I smell a rat…"
Other than the fact that Hit Somebody is yet again a miniseries instead of a movie (which is what we heard last year), the last line is the most interesting part. "I smell a rat…" certainly sounds like a hint that a sequel to Mallrats might be something on Smith's mind, and maybe he's even started writing it already. This is surprising since Mallrats was a huge failure for Universal, and Smith has even said how hard it was for him to have that movie bomb after the high he was on following the success of Clerks.
For those who may not know, Mallrats follows two directionless twentysomethings who spend way too much time hanging out at the mall. When Brodie (Jason Lee) is dumped by his girlfriend (Shannen Doherty), he retreats to the mall with his best friend T.S. (Jeremy London), whose girlfriend has also left him. Between brooding and visits to the food court, the unmotivated twosome decide to win their girlfriends back with the help of the ultimate delinquents, Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) and Jay (Jason Mewes). It's quintessential 90s, and it doesn't warrant a sequel, but neither did Clerks, so it doesn't really matter.
But Smith now has a pretty big fan-following, and the film became a cult classic of sorts on home video (that's where I saw it for the first time), so maybe it's not entirely out of the question. However, I can't imagine that Smith's fans are enough to convince Universal to back the sequel, so maybe enough time has passed that he doesn't have to worry about them interfering, or they've given him permission to do it without them being involved. Anyway, this is all just speculation and a twinkle in Smith's eye for now. With as slow as the moviemaking machine works, it'll definitely be at least a couple years before Mallrats 2 would become a reality, and a lot can happen between now and then. Do you want a Mallrats sequel?
