Non-Retired Kevin Smith May Be Working on a Sequel to 'Mallrats'

March 12, 2015

Even though writer/director Kevin Smith was once leaning towards retirement from filmmaking, the past couple years have actually seen him take on more projects at once than he's ever had before. He's going to finish his horror trilogy that he revealed last summer, which already began with Tusk last year, will continue with Yoga Hosers on June 1st this summer, and end with Moose Jaws sometime next year. There's also Clerks III shooting this May, and the holiday horror flick Anti-Claus on the way as well. And now Smith seems to be hinting at a sequel to the biggest box office bomb of his career after all those are done. Read on!

Here's the update Kevin Smith posted on Facebook today:

"Saw some websites are reporting CLERKS III will be my last flick. I did say this at one point, but Tusk changed all that. Now, the next 2 years are booked. We shoot CLERKS III in May. The HIT SOMEBODY hockey miniseries finally follows in the fall, shooting September to Christmas 2015. Then in Feb/March 2016, we tackle MOOSE JAWS and ANTI-CLAUS. And after that? I smell a rat…"

Other than the fact that Hit Somebody is yet again a miniseries instead of a movie (which is what we heard last year), the last line is the most interesting part. "I smell a rat…" certainly sounds like a hint that a sequel to Mallrats might be something on Smith's mind, and maybe he's even started writing it already. This is surprising since Mallrats was a huge failure for Universal, and Smith has even said how hard it was for him to have that movie bomb after the high he was on following the success of Clerks.

For those who may not know, Mallrats follows two directionless twentysomethings who spend way too much time hanging out at the mall. When Brodie (Jason Lee) is dumped by his girlfriend (Shannen Doherty), he retreats to the mall with his best friend T.S. (Jeremy London), whose girlfriend has also left him. Between brooding and visits to the food court, the unmotivated twosome decide to win their girlfriends back with the help of the ultimate delinquents, Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) and Jay (Jason Mewes). It's quintessential 90s, and it doesn't warrant a sequel, but neither did Clerks, so it doesn't really matter.

But Smith now has a pretty big fan-following, and the film became a cult classic of sorts on home video (that's where I saw it for the first time), so maybe it's not entirely out of the question. However, I can't imagine that Smith's fans are enough to convince Universal to back the sequel, so maybe enough time has passed that he doesn't have to worry about them interfering, or they've given him permission to do it without them being involved. Anyway, this is all just speculation and a twinkle in Smith's eye for now. With as slow as the moviemaking machine works, it'll definitely be at least a couple years before Mallrats 2 would become a reality, and a lot can happen between now and then. Do you want a Mallrats sequel?

  • Another worthless sequel. Clerks 2 was garbage. A musical number...really?

  • Stinkpalm. Actually quite liked Mallrats.

Clerks 2 was great, and did a good job showing the characters growing up (finally). I would expect the same from Mallrats 2.

Will two-time Academy award winner Ben Affleck reprise his role as a douche? Is Shannon Doherty still alive? Will there be hints to sex with a minor being videotaped again? Does anyone even hang out at a mall in 2017??? Questions I really don't need answered unfortunately.

      Then why ask? Thats rhetorical.

Why retire when you can churn out crap that hipsters fucking eat up?

Why so angry at hipsters? Hell, most "hipsters" I know don't even watch movies or TV. Regardless, getting paid to do your favorite thing (that you're apparently really good at,) with all your best friends, AND you get to pay them too?!? Fucking sign me up. I'd never retire either.

Smith has not had a good movie in awhile now. Saying he "is really good at it" is far to generous. Honestly Id say he only ever had 1 good movie, Clerks. I like Mallrats a lot, but its not very good. Dogma was a mess JSBSB was terrible, Jersey Girl, Clerks 2, Red State, Tusk, all pretty objective failures. What you described, is a sell out, churning out shit just because you can and are getting paid. Yes its a great sett up for him and his friends, but we, the viewers get the fruit of his uninspired labor. And you are right I too would happily do it too, but I also would accept that I would be a sell out. "If I cannot bring anything new to the game, and I assure I cannot, there is no point to me stepping up to the plate." -Kevin Smith in an interview. And he is right His latest movie, Tusk, was a waste and just plain terrible. Now, as all his ideas have dried up he has fallen into the hollywood sequel cycle. He should be ashamed.
