Rooney Mara, Felicity Jones & More Testing for 'Star Wars' Spin-Off
We've still got 11 months until Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, but with the first Star Wars spin-off film slated to arrive one year after that, it's almost time for production to get into gear, and that means casting is getting underway as writer Gary Whitta departed the project after turning in a first draft. THR has word that Disney is in the process of testing females leads for the first standalone film set in the Star Wars universe that will be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards. As of now, the names that have surfaced include Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara, recent Oscar nominee Felicity Jones from The Theory of Everything and "Oprhan Black" star Tatiana Maslany.
Of course, it's anyone's guess as to what character these leading ladies might be up for since there's been no confirmation as to what the film will focus on. The last rumor we heard pegged the story as being about the heist to obtain the plans to the Death Star, which would have happened before the events of Star Wars (remember, that's what we're calling A New Hope). If that's the case, these actresses likely wouldn't be playing any familiar characters to fans of the saga. Besides these names testing, there was also some reading and testing done for the film in the United Kingdom in December, so hopefully we'll hear more soon.

What if the crew from Star Wars Rebels is the one that performed the heist... They could be looking to cast Sabine Wren.

I trust Gareth to make an awesome movie and Rooney has my vote but the rumoured plot sounds boring to me.

Ahhhh, I would hope that Rooney Mara would continue to avoid doing this kind of mass-audience appeal stuff. She's much more of a serious actress than this type of movie. Same for the other two mentioned, but it's a business and they want the work. I'd just hate to see it. Well, I wouldn't see it as I wouldn't be caught dead watching a Star Wars movie...or the like. That's just a personal preference, so don't get all twisted out of shape. This stuff can't be taken seriously though...can it?
