'The Best Man' Director Gets in the Chair for MGM's 'Barbershop 3'
Last year we heard that the comedy franchise Barbershop was getting a third chapter (fourth if you count the spin-off Beauty Shop), with Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and Queen Latifah reprising their respective roles. Now the film finally has a director as Deadline reports Malcolm D. Lee, who has been behind The Best Man films, will be at the helm of Barbershop 3. The film is finally coming together quickly with Ice Cube also producing alongside Bob Teitel and George Tillman Jr. of State Street Pictures as the lead producers. The films aren't runaway hits, but they're cheap to make, and make a decent return.
As of now, it's not clear what the story will be for this third outing, or if any other characters will return from the first two Barbershop movies. However, Ice Cube has been working pretty closely with Kevin Hart lately on Ride Along and the forthcoming sequel to the buddy cop comedy, so maybe the box office drawing comedian will sign up. The rapper turned actor has been doing pretty well in the film business lately with his role in the 21 Jump Street franchise, not to mention Straight Outta Compton, the forthcoming film about his in influential rap group NWA, which debuted a great red band trailer recently. Anyway, the Barbershop franchise has a niche audience, so this won't be a huge hit, but the fans will turn out.
