Trailer for TIFF Selected Belgian Horror 'Cub' Puts Scouts in Danger

Cub

Sometimes films that make the rounds on the film festival circuit just don't make it to theaters for one reason or another. There may not be appeal to a distributor to bring it to theaters, or maybe it just doesn't drum up enough buzz. In the case of Cub, we're not sure what the issue is, but the Belgian horror film from Jonas Govaerts played TIFF last year, and has already hit theaters in plenty of overseas markets. The film follows a group of young campers who end up terrorized in the woods. Sadly, it will only be hitting Blu-Ray and DVD here in the United States, but we still wanted to call your attention to the US trailer for the film that our own Jeremy Kirk has called an "envelope-pushing horror fan's dream" from Fantastic Fest. Watch!

Here's the US trailer for Jonas Govaerts's Cub from Artsploitation Films:

Cub

You can still watch the TIFF trailer for Cub right here.

Troubled 12-year-old Sam (Maurice Luijten) heads off on a summer camping trip with his Cub Scout troupe. When the highly imaginative boy claims to have seen a creature in the woods, his counselors assume that their campfire tales of a monster named Kai have gotten to him. But watching from the darkness is a real masked, feral child whose menacing snarl and quick movements go unnoticed by all except Sam. As the mocking taunts of the other boys isolate Sam further from his pack, he becomes convinced that a terrible fate awaits them all. Cub marks the directorial debut of Jonas Govaerts, who co-wrote the script with Roel Mondelaers. The Belgian horror film premiered at TIFF, and it hits Blu-Ray & DVD on August 18th.

It's straight up horror! I originally thought it was an adventure/horror type of movie. Been waiting for a good camp movie but I don't know if this will satisfy, I've heard mixed things. It's already on movietube, Ill have to check it out I guess.

Looks good. I had to stop reading the subtitles. I was missing too much of the wonderful terribleness.

    Looks good.

Having seen it I have to disagree. I thought it was messy and the leads were less than inspiring. The film takes ages to get going, sets up scenarios and then never uses them and instead it becomes a poorly cut slasher with no real purpose. I can see why they passed on sending this to the cinema in the USA.

But damn ! What is this bullshit ? I was expecting a survivor mode in the woods as a collector-like ! And no, it's some rotten stuff dealing with creepy 12 yo kids who spy their organizer taking her shower then drill her body while she’s impaled on a tree full of pics! A boring scenario which explores nothing except the dialect between Flanders and Wallons ! It's just dirty and sordid . I love horror movies for its inventiveness and suspense , not to make me feel uncomfortable while viewing kids slain a mutt sequestered in bag like a piñata or perforate some bellies in a macabre mud bath where macerated a bunch of corpses. To watch if you are in need of foul thoughts ...
