The Dark Tower Movie - Idris Elba

It's official - The Dark Tower movie is being made starring Idris Elba confirmed as the gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as the mystical foe known as the man in black. The news was officially revealed via Entertainment Weekly, and tweeted out by author Stephen King, who wrote the book series that this is based on. After years and years of rumors we finally have confirmed casting news for this highly-anticipated adaptation. Over the years names included Javier Bardem & Viggo Mortensen, Christian Bale, even Aaron Paul for a role. But those were all connected to earlier versions of this project, which is now in the works with producers Akiva Goldsman, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Erica Huggins of Imagine Entertainment.

Here's the tweet from author Stephen King confirming the casting - plus McConaughey & Elba having fun:

The Dark Tower movie is being directed by Danish filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel, of A Royal Affair and Truth About Men previously; from a screenplay adapted by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. "What Stephen King does best is mixing the everyday, or what you might call the mundane, with the fantastical," Arcel tells EW. "In my view, [The Dark Tower] novels are a mix between sci-fi and fantasy and modern times. That exact mix is so Stephen King." King says the movie will open with the first line from the first book. "It should start that way… I’ve been pretty insistent about that." As for Elba: "I had to go to Idris and tell him my vision for the entire journey with Roland and the ka-tet… He had a unique vision for who Roland would be." The film is now in pre-production with filming starting soon in the next few months. Expect more casting news soon.

Whether this movie is great, or a stinker, will have nothing to do with Elba and McConaughey. Both great actors. I'm VERY curious to see how Elba plays Roland.
    • Higgens
Ideally he channels Eastwood from the Dollars trilogy. As thats pretty much who Roland is.
      • TheOct8pus
Yeah....a 70's Clint would have been awesome....his kid could've played the part (they would have had to "Ugly" him up a bit)....but like you said, Elba is a solid actor, so there's good potential for not's really up to the screenwriters and director at this point.
        • Higgens
          Yep, agreed.

i would not have dared hope that two actors of this calibre would get asked - and would accept - the project. but if you'd told me they would, i would have assumed McConaughey was Roland, and Elba was Flagg. *very* curious to see how they *both* play their characters!
  • Higgens
Really hoped for Eastwoods son to be Roland, only for the looks though, being based off of Clints "man with no name". Elba should nail it though. Probably a better actor than Eastwoods boy. I will not get hyped for this, I will try at least, it was some 20 years ago I first read The Dark Tower, man it pulled me in, I loved it, I hope its done well, so its a movie I can enjoy and not be upset during.

Wonder if they'll give Elba contacts so he can have those faded blue bombardier's eyes. I agree with the Eastwood thing...that was always the picture in my head. Never seen Scotty act, so I'm not sure it would have worked.

Not sure how I feel about McConaughey as Randall Flagg. Never got the sinister vibe from him, Never have I felt creeped out or threatened by one of his roles. Never have I felt him truly COMMAND a scene. He is a great actor, but the Man in Black, Randall Flagg, A creature who may be the devil, a wizard, Owns the screen(should at least) when he is in a scene. Stoked for Elba, Pleased McConaughey is involved. Eddie Dean maybe, But the man in black, Im not sure. The guy from the Made for TV "The Stand" actually did a pretty good job. If McConaughey can take that welcoming appeal he has and twist so when you look at his smile you fell welcomed and simultaneously violated, he could be epic. And FUCK, all this chat has gone and gotten me excited for this.

Did you watch McConaughey in True Detective? He shines in that. I think he can pull this off.
      • Higgens
I have not, fully willing to admit there may be some roles of his I missed that show he has what it takes. I am willing to give him leeway, because I do think he is a darn fine actor.
        • Taternuts222
          Alright alright alright!

Watch Killer Joe and you will be convinced. Matthew is perfect as a real creepy psychopath.
    • Taternuts222
He's gotta be better than the guy that played Flagg in "The Stand" mini-series.
      • Higgens
Although campy I though that guy did an Ok job.
  • It's the perfection casting choice. Idris is simply a great actor with allot of charisma (watch the TV show Luther, awesome). McConaughey as Randal Flagg is harder to accept, but he did a good job in mud, interstellar and true detective. So i give him a chance because i can't see another doing it better,i am open for suggestions. Nice topic to hear from others.
So now the weakest link is the director? That's fine. We still gotta damn fine picture shaping up here.

Slightly torn on this. Wish this story would be told on television. How did a network not pick this up? Why HBO why!!
    • Taternuts222
Amen! It'll be hard to pull this off just as movies. Hope they film it all at once so we don't have to see a 20 year old Jake Chambers.

I'm going to be honest I'm upset and a bit shocked as much as I love these two guys I didn't see this coming.

Not holding my breath. I remember how excited I got 10-15 years ago when I heard JJ Abrahms had bought the rights to the Dark Tower series for $19. I've followed all of the rumors since then with none panning out. We'll see if this actually flies. A bit surprised at Idris Elba playing Roland. He's a good actor but not the picture in my head. I'll probably be labeled a racist for saying so. But since I am white, I think I would have the right to kick up a fuss if they cast a white woman as Susannah Dean. Having a black man playing Roland kinda messes up the whole dynamic with Susannah and Roland...just remember how much Detta Walker hated those white boys! Big part of the plot.

You know what? Shame on me for not thinking of Morgan Freeman playing Red in The Shawshank Redemption. One of my favorite movies ever and also an adaptation of a King tale. Part of the reason he's one of my favorite actors. Statement retracted.

Would love to hear "In the Court of the Crimson King" on the soundtrack. Maybe as Roland and Patrick finally approach the Dark Tower.
