New Story Details on The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time
A few weeks ago it was confirmed that Flight of the Conchords co-creator James Bobin would be directing the Jason Segel-written Muppets (revival) movie for Disney. Originally we heard that the title was supposed to be The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made!, but now according to a script review up on The Playlist, the title will now be The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time. Seems like they're really going all out on this one, almost like this is going to be the last Muppets movie we ever see. To save everyone from learning too much about the story, I've pulled out the most important parts below, so it's a only a simple plot synopsis.
Zombieland Writers Talk About Ideas for the Next 3D Sequel
"There absolutely will be a sequel, and it will absolutely be in 3-D," Zombieland co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed to MTV. "Now, it's just a question of what that sequel will be. It's not a question of having enough ideas, but almost having too many ideas. We have a lot of ideas!" And what might those ideas be? Let's find out! As you probably know, Reese & Wernick have quickly become two of Hollywood's hottest writers, getting hired for this sequel, the G.I. Joe sequel, and Deadpool, all in the last few months. But the focus this time is on what they're thinking about for the Zombieland sequel (in 3D) at this point.
Stan Lee Claims Edgar Wright's Ant-Man Movie is Coming!
Oh, that sneaky Stan Lee. Or rather "Smilin Stan Lee" as he's known on Twitter. The legendary comic book maestro wrote a few tweets today about upcoming Marvel movies. Lee wrote, after presumably having lunch with Edgar Wright, that: "Marvel is prepping a movie starring — Ant Man!" Now, we've known this for a long time, what we don't know, however, is how soon Marvel Studios wants to get the Ant-Man movie into production. I wouldn't take this as a sure sign that it's officially happening, as Stan Lee doesn't exactly work for Kevin Feige, and he's the one who makes all the decisions at Marvel Studios. But you never know?
What's Martin Scorsese Doing Next Following Shutter Island?
I don't know if everyone feels the same, but ever sine The Departed in 2006, I've been waiting for Martin Scorsese to direct another Oscar home run. His latest film, Shutter Island, hits theaters in a few weeks; I'm excited for it but I don't think the Academy will remember it 10 months from now. But what's next for Scorsese after Shutter Island? The Playlist pulled together some quotes from a French site to give us this line-up: The Invention of Hugo Cabret is Scorsese's very next project, followed by the 17th century Jesuit priest drama Silence then his mob drama The Irishman. Anyone of these seem Oscar caliber?
Confirmed: Penélope Cruz Cast in Lars von Trier's Melancholia
It looks like the lovely Penélope Cruz wants a bit of time in the controversial von Trier spotlight after seeing Charlotte Gainsbourg steal her thunder in Cannes last year (Gainsbourg won the Best Actress award, Cruz did not). I just received a news tip from a Swiss reader who runs the site Cineman.ch. He was informing me that, somewhere in Germany, it was just announced that German director Lars von Trier cast Penélope Cruz is his next upcoming film called Melancholia. On their website, though, I can't find any sourcing details. While I do trust them, I need confirmation before I can call this anything than a rumor.
Rock Band Phoenix Scoring Sofia Coppola's Film Somewhere
I'm actually starting to like this new Hollywood trend to have rock bands or music groups score big movies. Sure, it's not new, but it's really starting to pick up again and there are some great collaborations coming up (like Daft Punk scoring Tron Legacy or Mastodon scoring Jonah Hex). In the same vein, SlashFilm found a story on Prefix Mag yesterday reporting that French rock band Phoenix (famous for the song "1901") will be writing and recording the soundtrack for Sofia Coppola's new film Somewhere starring Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning. Sounds like another awesome collaboration between great musicians and filmmakers.
Lionsgate's Saw Series Finally Ending at Saw VII This Year?
Now this is an interesting update, mainly because the quotes are a bit old, but it's big news we missed. I'm a fan of the Saw series and still attend the midnight of every new one every year, but I admit that its run out of steam, and at this point I'm pretty much done with it. But as always, Lionsgate presses on, and Saw VII is in the works as we speak. When will it ever end? Latino Review published a transcript from an interview conducted on 107.5 Demon FM in the UK (listen here) with Saw VII writer Patrick Melton. It's a couple months old, but he says some interesting stuff about where this series is headed and how soon it may end.
Hugh Laurie in Discussions to Star in Dark Comedy 'Oranges'
Many fans have been waiting to see "House" actor Hugh Laurie make the jump to the big screen in a lead role, not counting voice roles (like in Monsters vs Aliens) or supporting roles (like in Street Kings or Stuart Little). Potentially some good news for Laurie fans, as the LA Times' 24 Frames blog is reporting that Laurie is "in discussions" to play the lead role in a new project called Oranges (or The Oranges written by Jay Reiss and Ian Helfer). You may remember seeing it on the 2008 Black List. It's a dark comedy about a man who has a romantic relationship with the daughter of a family friend, which turns their lives upside down.
David Goyer & Jonathan Nolan Working on Batman 3 Script?
It's another one of "these" stories. Yes, the sequel to The Dark Knight is coming, it's just taking some time. And yes, they're probably working on a script right now, even though Chris Nolan is still finishing Inception. Just this past weekend, David S. Goyer announced that he was leaving the ABC show FlashForward to work on "feature projects." Although he directed The Unborn and was FlashForward's showrunner, Goyer also put together the story for The Dark Knight and co-wrote Batman Begins, too. However, it shouldn't be an immediate assumption that the "feature project" he's working on instead is indeed Batman 3. Read on!
Newsweek's Oscar Roundtable with Six of 2009's Best Actors
Back in December, THR hosted a roundtable interview with the six soon-to-be-nominated Best Directors of 2009 (sadly, Peter Jackson was the one who didn't make the Oscar cut). Following in suit, Newsweek put together their own big roundtable interview after the Academy Awards nominations were announced. Their new series, called simply Oscar Roundtable 2010, includes one big roundtable interview with these six great actors: Jeff Bridges, Morgan Freeman, Carey Mulligan, Sandra Bullock, Gabourey Sidibe and Woody Harrelson. You can check out one of the video clips below or head over to their site for more. Check 'em out!
The Invaders Will Appear in Joe Johnston's Captain America
As expected, there's a lot of big Captain America news hitting the web this weekend because director Joe Johnston is finally out talking to press. In addition to all the details we learned about the movie yesterday, over at CHUD they've confirmed with Johnston himself that The Invaders, a WWII superteam that Cap and Bucky are a part of, will be in the movie, too. In fact, "they'll be in the entire second half," Johnston told them. It was first rumored last year that The Invaders might make an appearance but now we know they're officially involved. So does that mean we might see up to "nine costumed characters" in this movie total?
Watch This: Disney's New Prince of Persia Superbowl TV Spot
"The gods have a plan for you." The only other TV spot that aired during the Superbowl that wasn't already online before was for Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I know everyone isn't too keen on this movie, but I'm still very excited for it, I don't know why. I loved the video game and I don't have any complaints about this (no, I don't care about Jake Gyllenhaal playing the "Persian"). And I love the reversal halfway into this TV spot. I think that may be a hint that we're going to see some big time reversal moments in this movie and I can't wait to see that. Anyway, I've said enough, check out the new Superbowl TV spot!
Watch This: Disney's Alice in Wonderland Superbowl TV Spot
Disney aired their Superbowl TV spot for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and it can be watched online below. Its got some new footage and new editing and I actually really like it. I'm still not sure if this will be that good of a movie or not (I'm honestly a bit skeptical), but I am looking forward to finally seeing it and then letting you know what I think. But if you're looking for a final boost of interest for Alice, check this out, I think a few of you may be ready to see it in theaters after watching this. Disney should have more TV spots coming during the Superbowl so stay tuned here for any more that pop up once their air. Enjoy it!
Indie Trailer Sunday: First Trailer for Ondine with Colin Farrell
Okay, bear with me, even if you don't like Colin Farrell, I still suggest checking out this trailer for Neil Jordan's Ondine. I actually saw this film at the Toronto Film Festival late last year and quite enjoyed it (although I never wrote a review). This trailer makes it seem way more epic than it actually is, but that said, the film itself is very sweet and charming and kind of a breath of fresh air to watch (especially after watching depressing films). Don't worry, it doesn't turn into a horror/thriller at the end (like this trailer implies), but it's a great film. The Playlist first found this on YouTube last week so I owe them thanks. Watch and enjoy!
Updates on Captain America - Red Skull Confirmed as Villain
Director Joe Johnston has been out talking to press this weekend for his new movie The Wolfman and most of the discussion has ended up focusing on The First Avenger: Captain America. Johnston spoke with Collider and gave them a lot of details about the direction they're heading with the film. Additionally, ComingSoon confirmed (as did AICN) that the villain in Captain America will be Cap's arch-nemesis Red Skull, the Nazi badass whose head is just a red skull. Now this is the kind of awesome stuff that I like to hear because it's getting me very excited about seeing Johnston's Captain America movie come together.
