FirstShowing Heads to Sundance - Coverage Details for 2010!
Another year, another Sundance Film Festival, but as always, we've got some changes this year! The first thing I should mention is that Brandon Lee Tenney will be making the trek to Park City for his first time, writing reviews and coverage of the fest for FS. This will be my 4th year attending and I'm planning to see as many films as I can and provide some great interviews and video blogs (find them here). The bad news is that Bob Stencil will not be returning this year (watch his videos from last year) but he will be back again for Comic-Con. Anyway, expect lots of reviews over the next two weeks and all of our normal coverage as well.

A New Decade Begins - Happy New Years from FirstShowing!
Happy New Years! Yet another year has come and gone but it only means bigger and better things are yet to come. As I look back at 2009, and everything that occurred this last year, I'm already amazed at how far we've come in such a short amount of time and I can't go without thanking all you, our readers, for helping us get to this point. We've got some exciting things in store for 2010, including a few new surprises arriving next week. As for the film line-up in 2010, it looks quite impressive as well, with lots of highly anticipated projects finally hitting theaters. Here's to another great year of success and, of course, more great movies!
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from All of Us at FS.net
From all of us here at FirstShowing.net, we want to wish every one our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays! Whether you're with your family or with friends or whether it's snowing or sunny, we hope you have a wonderful weekend. For those that follow the tradition of seeing a movie on Christmas Day, like myself, I hope we've at the very least helped you make the right choice this year (I personally suggest Avatar or Up in the Air or Sherlock Holmes). And a very special thank you to every last one of our readers who have helped make this another amazing year for FirstShowing.net. We'll see all of you again after the weekend!
Follow the Characters in the Home Alone Project on Twitter
Now this is pretty unique idea. One of my all-time favorite Christmas movies is, without a doubt, Home Alone, the 1990 Macaulay Culkin classic. I've seen it enough times to know exactly what happens when and how it all plays out, but it's still a great movie. Apparently someone else wanted to take their knowledge and love of Home Alone to the next level as they've started up the "Home Alone Project" on Twitter. They've created fake Twitter accounts for some 19 characters in the movie, from Kevin McCallister to his big brother Buzz to Old Man Marley, and are tweeting things just like if everything was actually happening in real life.
Actress Brittany Murphy Has Tragically Died at Age 32 Today
Multiple sites, including TMZ, are now reporting that actress Brittany Murphy, seen most recently in Across the Hall, died this morning at the age of 32 in Los Angeles. The reports indicate that she went into full cardiac arrest and could not be revived. No other information is known about her death, besides that it occurred at the home of her husband Simon Monjack this morning at around 8AM. This is incredibly tragic especially considering she was still a young budding actress with quite a bit of potential. While she wasn't the most popular actress, she will certainly be remember for her many great appearances in many films.
Walt Disney's Nephew Roy E. Disney Passes Away at Age 79
It has been officially confirmed by THR that Roy E. Disney, the nephew of Walt Disney who became a powerful behind-the-scenes influence on the family business, has died today at the age of 79. Not everyone may be familiar with Roy Disney, but he was one of the most influential people inside of the Walt Disney Company, helping turn it into the immensely successful company, movie studio, and powerful global brand that it is today. Back in 2005, he resigned both as an executive and as a member of the board of directors, although he's remained intimately involved in the company ever since. He died earlier today from cancer.
Derrick Comedy Thanks You For Seeing Their Film Mystery Team
This past weekend, Derrick Comedy's first feature film, Mystery Team, opened in New York City. It had the fourth-highest per screen average over the weekend, a period during which they were the second-most Demanded thing on Eventful. Due to the success of the opening in New York, Derrick will continue to tour the film around to cities with the most demands. Starting this Friday and Saturday, Mystery Team will be showing at the Guild Cinema in Albuquerque, NM. To say thanks for all of your great support, we were sent this letter from the Derrick Comedy guys and asked to share it with all of you, the online film community.
London Readers Meet-Up Tonight at 8PM for Some Drinks!
I'm currently in London at the moment for a brief visit surrounding Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox. I'll be heading to the Roald Dahl estate later today for a tour and visit and also talking with Wes Anderson, Bill Murray, and Jason Schwartzman. You'll be hearing plenty more about that side of my visit to London soon enough, but if you're a London-based reader of FS.net and want to catch up for a few drinks tonight, Peter from SlashFilm and I are hosting a meet-up at the Nellie Dean pub (seen in the photo above) tonight, Tuesday, October 13th at 20:00 (8:00PM). Hopefully I'll get to meet a few of you tonight, so stop by later!

Actor David Carradine Found Dead in Thailand
Multiple sources, including CNN and the BBC, have confirmed that 72-year-old actor David Carradine was found dead in his hotel in Bangkok, Thailand earlier today. The BBC is claiming that Bangkok police told them that Carradine hung himself in his own room. The actor was in Thailand filming his latest film called Stretch, according to his personal manager Chuck Binder. Carradine's death was "shocking and sad. He was full of life, always wanting to work… a great person," Binder said. Most will recognize Carradine as Bill from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films, but his acting career stretches all the way back to the 1960's.
Take That Michael Bay? McG Finally Says It's All a Big Joke
A few weeks back, at the end of April, we published a new quote from McG in the on-going McG vs Michael Bay battle. Until recently, the "fight" had been about whose robots were bigger and whose robots were more realistic. But then McG took it to the next level: "Michael Bay has a big cock, but I'd like to believe mine is bigger." So how does Bay overcome that? Well, thankfully he doesn't have to, as McG finally cleared the air in a recent interview with E! Online. "That was lost immediately and people gravitated to two spoiled brat directors think they have big cocks," McG said. "Nothing could be further from the truth."
The Basics: Alex's New Editorial Series with Drew McWeeny
On Friday, my colleague Drew McWeeny (formerly of AICN, now of HitFix) and I officially launched a new editorial series called The Basics (read his introduction). Over the few years that I've been running this site, I've been often criticized by readers and fellow critics for not having seen enough of the basic "must see" films from cinematic history. Instead of chastising me like everyone else, Drew called me with an idea for a column where every few weeks he would recommend one film (that I haven't seen) for me to watch. Therefore, as he says, "brick by brick, we'll lay a foundation" and I'll finally get to see these classics.
Alex is Headed to the Cannes Film Festival - Vive la France!
I've been dropping hints about this for a while, but this is the official announcement. I'm currently on my way to the airport to catch a flight to France, then a train to the French Riviera, where I'll be attending the world famous Cannes Film Festival. I'll be covering the full festival - May 13th to May 24th - and will be writing reviews and providing all the normal festival coverage (like I do at Sundance). Additionally, I'll be doing my very best to cover all the daily news, however with time difference (9 hours) and with the schedule at Cannes, updates might be a bit sporadic. If I'm late on getting something posted, now you know why!

And this Thursday and Friday night, the Cinemapocalypse tour will stop by the New Beverly Cinema for two special presentations. Alamo Weird Wednesday programmer Lars Nilsen and Terror Tuesday curator Zack Carlson are bringing rare and unseen treasures from their 35mm bunker, which you won't want to miss!
