Hitting theaters next week for Thanksgiving is the most badass action-packed ninja movie you'll see this year - Ninja Asssassin. It's directed by James McTeigue, who got his start working as the Assistant Director for the Wachowski Brothers on The Matrix, then spun off and directed V for Vendetta on his own. Now he's back with his second movie, Ninja Asssassin, and it's awesome (I've seen it a few times and love it). A few months back, Warner Bros invited me to interview McTeigue while he was in Austin at Fantastic Fest. In promotion of the release next week, here's my interview with James, which went incredibly well.

I've been a big fan of McTeigue ever since I first saw V for Vendetta (which is one of my all-time favorite movies) and have been excited to talk to him for a long time. I think he's a fantastic director with a lot of potential and a unique style. Ninja Assassin may get some flack for its poor story, but blame the writers, not McTeigue. In fact, I think he did a great job with the script and budget he had, and delivered one hell of an action-packed, bloody, and entertaining movie. And if you're wondering why the blood is so stylized, well, that's one question he answers in this. Ninja Assassin hit theaters everywhere on November 25th. See it!

There's really no denying that superhero movies are in their prime right now. Years ago, no one thought comic book adaptations would become the mainstream mega-hits that they are today. And to show us the history and evolution of that genre, we've got another great graph to feature today called The Evolution of the Superhero Movie. This comes from the guys who made the Sequels That Bombed, $400 Million Club, and Harry Potter Directors graphics previously. This is one of my all-time favorites though, just because it's dealing with an area of cinema that I'm very familiar with. And so with that, check this out fullsize below.

There are a lot of fascinating stats found on this chart. For example, 68% of all superhero movies are from Marvel, which is an impressive majority. Not sure if that includes movies like Blade, but it's still a good number. Additionally, it's both amusing and completely unsurprising that the three biggest bombs are the three Punisher movies. They might as well give up - a Punisher adaptation will never work. And of course, I'm glad to see Batman as the top-grossing franchise, slightly above Spider-Man. Now your thoughts?

Yes, I know you're trying to forget about Transformers 2, and this isn't helping. If you followed the big back-n-forth between Michael Bay and Megan Fox earlier this year, you might've been left wondering if she would actually return, considering it seemed the two were not on good terms. However, Bay talked to USA Today at the recent Victoria's Secret show (he directed some of their commercials) and he's not mad at her after all. "I love her," Bay said. "It's just, she's young. Everyone's got to give her a break, she's only... 23? It's just hard. I've traveled around the world with her and she's just like this world symbol now, ya know?"

Everyone's got to give her a break, she's only… 23? It's just hard. I've traveled around the world with her and she's just like this world symbol now, ya know?"

Uh, right, we know, but thanks for clarifying. But that's not all. For better or worse, he also confirms she's set to return in Transformers 3, which he's already been working on since its due out in July 2011.

He also said, "She's got a great part in Transformers 3," and he said he's currently working on the script. So Bay's not planning on getting revenge by, say, killing her off? "No, no. no," he said, dismissing it. "She gets enough of that already."

That's both amusing and depressing all at the same time. I don't want to start making comparisons like this, but one of the reasons why I think The Dark Knight was as brilliant as it was is because Christopher Nolan had enough balls to (spoiler!) kill off the female love interest in his movie. Bay may now consider adding that into the story (why not?), which might not be a bad idea. I'd rather see something like that happen to Mikaela than have them continue to leave plot holes left and right and ruin another sequel. And it might up the ante in a big way. And no, temporarily killing Optimus in Revenge of the Fallen isn't the same either!

Lionsgate has debuted the full-length trailer for Season of the Witch starring Nic Cage and Ron Perlman on Fandango today. We previously featured a very short teaser trailer for this back during Halloween. If it weren't for Cage being so damn cheesy, I would say this actually looks pretty damn cool. I mean, its got Ron Perlman and it's about a witch who summons evil to attack this group of guys trying to transport her across Europe. It looks pretty badass, like some good, dark cinematic entertainment, let's just hope it holds up and Cage doesn't ruin it. I'm not sure I have faith in Dominic Sena yet, but we'll find out in March. Take a look!

Just last month we keyed you in on an adaptation of Charlotte Bronte's seminal novel Jane Eyre to be helmed by Cary Fukunaga, director of the buzzed about foreign film Sin Nombre, starting next year. Now Variety reports that Mia Wasikowska (Defiance) and Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) are in negotiations to star in the film scripted by Moira Buffini.
Wasikowska is sure to bring more attention to the adaptation of this iconic British novel after audiences catch her as the titular Alice in Wonderland in Tim Burton's fantastical adaptation of yet another classic piece of literature being released next March. The actress has slowly built a name for herself, and has even caught the attention of director Gus Van Sant who has cast her in his upcoming untitled teen angst driven drama. Fassbender on the other hand will also be gaining more attention as he is stars the upcoming comic book adaptation Jonah Hex. Period pieces like this don't really grab my attention, but with these up-and-coming actors taking part in the follow-up film for Cary Fukunaga, it just might be worth a look. Agreed?

While Mike White might not be a household name, you've surely seen him in bit parts of movies like School of Rock, Orange County and more recently Gentlemen Broncos. And what you might not know is that aside from acting in those films, White has also written or produced those and several other projects. Now it looks like White has found his next project to write as Variety announces that he will pen Santa Wars, a holiday comedy based on the apparently true story of rival factions that developed within a union of professional Santa Clauses who became arch enemies during an epic Santa Claus civil war of sorts.

The chronicle of the Santa Wars were recounted on Ira Glass' popular public radio show "This American Life" as written by Joshuah Bearman (who will executive produce the film) that aired last December. The segment revolved around the battles that erupted after two men who made seasonal livings dressing up as Santas formed a union, the Amalgamated Order of Real Bearded Santas, but then became bitter rivals. Thanks to SlashFilm we can direct you to the original segment (audio only since it's a radio show) on the "This American Life" website (just fast forward to the 22:30 mark). It's an amusing story to listen to.

Truly great holiday comedies are few and far between, but this sounds like a holiday comedy that I can get behind and hopefully won't be more junk thrown on the DVD shelf the following Christmas. For now this is just one more reason to look forward to Christmas, despite the movie not being ready by this Christmas.

If Marley & Me proved anything (other than some people are just mean-spirited), it's that audiences still love man's best friend on the big screen, no matter how heart-wrenching the story. Now Warner Bros is banking on a feel-good dog story as THR reports they have picked up the rights to Nubs, for writer Justin Zackham (The Bucket List) to tell the story of a stray dog that Major Brian Dennis rescued while on a tour of duty on the front lines in Iraq. After nursing the dog back to health and caring for it as his own, he had him shipped back to the US to be reunited with the dog when his tour ended. Truly heart-warming, indeed.

Along with Dennis' life rights, the story as chronicled in the children's book Nubs: A Marine, a Mutt and a Miracle, was purchased after making the rounds on talk shows like "Today," "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." Despite being a feel-good film, apparently it still has elements in common with Marley & Me with a focus on complicated relationships between humans - and complicated relationships between humans and their dogs. As Zackham says, "It's a story that parents can take their kids to but that adults can also go to and appreciate. It's one of those movies that everyone can take something from." Hopefully I won't want to take back my admission price like I did after I saw The Bucket List. Zing!

It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements." That's Hollywood talk for, we're trying to figure out how to make the most money and convince audiences they're not watching a recycled movie they saw six years ago all over again. Let's not forget this new one is supposed to be shot in 3D as well. After the American Gladiators made a huge television comeback on NBC with all new events and red, white and blue clad, muscle-bulging athletes, the next logical step was to somehow adapt it into a feature length motion picture as we reported earlier this year. Now it looks like the project is making some headway as Variety reports screenwriter Peter Iliff, (Point Break, Patriot Games) will write the film based on the television show which first premiered in the late 80's, however the story will see the titular characters as superheroes instead. So it looks like Marvel plans to continue to drop hints about what to expect storywise in the Thor movie by announcing more casting and giving us a taste of who the most important characters are. THR's Heat Vision reports today that Idris Elba has joined the cast of Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of Thor. Elba will play Heimdall, the guardian of the mythical world of Asgard, who stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders. Boy does he look like a badass guardian. But does this mean Asgard going to be attacked at some point in the movie? Is that the hint Marvel is dropping here? Any more revelations?

He's a fine actor and I'm glad to see him join this cast as well. I don't know anything about the role, but I'm sure he's cast in it for a reason (as in, it's important). Thor also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Anthony Hopkins, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgård, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano. I'm curious if there are any other roles we don't know about that have been cast with name actors as well. Of course, we'll keep you updated!

I'm trying to slow down on our Avatar posts so as to not overload everyone with new footage, but this time I just can't help myself. IGN UK debuted a new featurette for James Cameron's Avatar today titled Human Hardware. It's actually a very impressive featurette looking at the design and development (and usage) of the various "hardware" that the humans use - as in, the badass mech AMP units (seen above), helicopters, gunships, and so on. My hope is that everyone gets more and more excited the more they see from Avatar, whether it be posters or more featurettes. And there's lots of new footage and plenty to see in this, so enjoy!

Within the last year, Twitter has become a huge source for updates and a valuable resource for keeping in touch with filmmakers. We've written about plenty of scoops and reports from Twitter before, but today we've got a few updates to highlight, all pertaining to Marvel movies in the works. First off, Jon Favreau tweeted a reply last night to a user confirming that the Iron Man 2 trailer would be attached to Sherlock Holmes, meaning it would debut on Christmas Day. That's almost exciting enough already. Additionally, though, some Marvel guys were chatting about a meeting they had for Kenneth Branagh's Thor movie.

The big Thor discussion was kicked off today by Marvel's editor-in-chief Joe Quesada - @JoeQuesada:

"I could listen to Branagh talk about Thor all day long. Cast is in place, sets are being built and screenplay is brilliant. Marveldom rules!"

Then comic book author Brian Michael Bendis - @BRIANMBENDIS ...

Then comic book author Brian Michael Bendis - @BRIANMBENDIS - replied with the following as well:

"Broadcasting live from marvel west. Thor movie meeting with Ken branagh was over the top amazing. Visited the sets! I was in Odin's chamber!"

"U should get in line for the Thor movie today. Just saying."

I know this kind of buzz is pretty much expected coming from people who work for Marvel, but it's always awesome to hear. And the more I hear, the more excited I get, which is a big change of pace because I wasn't on-board when they first signed Kenneth Branagh to direct. These new quotes fall right in line with what I've heard previously about this movie and about everything Branagh has done for it so far. We reported last week that Marvel and Paramount were preparing to shoot this in January. So while Thor is shooting, we'll all be screaming in excitement over the Iron Man 2 trailer, which will probably kick ass. I say bring it on!

As angry as I am about the swift moves to remake the spectacularly reviewed Let the Right One In, it wasn't the first time I had felt similar emotions in an all too familiar scenario. Back in 2007, El Orfanato (aka The Orphanage) hit theaters and gained considerable buzz and attention thanks to not only Guillermo del Toro's endorsement as producer, but also because it was a satisfyingly chilling tale. And like any foreign film that gains the smallest amount of attention in Hollywood, a remake was ordered with Larry Fessenden attached to direct. That is, until Arrow in the Head found out from Fessenden that he's off the project.

Fessenden laid it out bluntly:

"The Orphanage was two years of waiting. Working on the script with Guillermo was a very exciting experience, but then I got into a casting miasma and that's where the thing is; I think they're gonna do it another way, actually. So I think I'm out of it. Hopefully they'll still use my script, but I'm not sure I'm directing it anymore. That's Hollywood for ya."

Too true, Larry, too true. Unfortunately he doesn't mention exactly what character was the source of all the casting frustration, but I'm sure it has something to do with the casting of the lead female role. Now the concern will be finding a new director, but how much time is del Toro going to have to dedicate to keeping The Orphanage on track with his spending the next decade of his life dedicated to The Hobbit? We'll listen up for any further developments and let you know when/if they find a new director anytime soon. It'll be a considerable tough task to find someone else good enough. Who do you think should take over this?

I often get tired of writing about sequels that will never happen, but just because people want to see them, they always continue to exist as rumors forever and ever. Comedian extraordinaire Judd Apatow recently appeared on the Funny or Die Writer's Room live stream (found via The Playlist) and talked ever so briefly about two sequels to movies he produced. The first is Superbad, which has had sequel talk since the day it came out. And the second is Pineapple Express, which wasn't as big of a success as Superbad, but has also been talked about for a while. I'm down for seeing more from either, although I liked Superbad better.

"I can't get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to make the Superbad sequel. I begged, but they don't want to ruin it. They think it's a gem of a movie and they don't want a crappy second," Apatow said. That actually makes sense, especially because it was such a great movie. And as for Pineapple Express, he seems more optimistic. "There's a little talk about a Pineapple Express sequel if that's your cup of tea… your bowl of smoke. You probably have a better shot of seeing that [then any Superbad 2 or any other Apatow sequel]," he said. Although it sounds like they aren't doing a crossover sequel either. Damnit, I wanted to see that.

So there you have it. I'm not sure why they think Pineapple Express has some potential for a sequel and yet Superbad doesn't, but either way, I'm down. And while we won't get that crossover sequel, I can bet that if they do make Pineapple Express 2, Officers Slater and Michaels will show up at some point. Sound good?

It's a true shame that the once raunchily hilarious comedian Eddie Murphy has turned into a family film garbage machine. I don't have problems with family films, but rather family films that simply suck. So when I heard the news from THR's Risky Biz Blog that Eddie Murphy is attached to produce and potentially star in The Misadventures of Fluffy, a road trip flick through New York featuring talking animals, I was already worried. But when I heard that it also has "an element of social comedy reminiscent of Murphy's 1980's hit Trading Places," then I joined SlashFilm in hoping the old Eddie Murphy is finally coming back.

Obviously talking animals brings back shudder-inducing memories from the beginning of Eddie Murphy's downward spiral with two Dr. Dolittle films (I don't care if both films made $465 million globally between the two, because they were both terrible) but recalling one of Murphy's great comedies to describe to tone for Fluffy definitely has me intrigued. Oh and also that this will supposedly be R rated. Of course, with Murphy only formally attached to produce and only circling the possibility of starring, my hopes might be all for naught. And if this turns out just to be standard family fare, then I'll take the same route that myself and many others have taken with Murphy's previous films Imagine That and Meet Dave - I'll just sit this out.

If there's one thing that will stop a movie dead in its tracks, it's one of the filmmakers being sent to prison. Such is the case with the developing horror sequel Silent Hill 2. While a sequel might not seem necessary or even desired, certain fans and, of course, the producers feel otherwise. Despite the delay caused by writer Roger Avary's imprisonment, make-up effects designer Paul Jones was still pumped for Silent Hill 2 just last week and it sounded like Avary was still on board. Now producer Don Carmody has shared some new info about the pending sequel with ShockTillYouDrop, and it's quite interesting to hear what he has to say.

Right from the get-go, Carmody says, "Well, we have had a bit of a hiccup with Roger. We're just debating whether we can wait for him. He's writing the script for sure." But while we're waiting to hear if Avary will be out of prison by the time they decide to go into production, Carmody did have some details regarding the direction the story was taking:

"I think we need to make it a little more accessible to the movie-going public. 'Silent Hill' is not a blockbuster game like 'Resident Evil' or the other games out there. It's a connoisseurs' game. It has its own, rabid fan base. They're not cheap, these things. You have to appeal not only to the gamers, you have to appeal to a wider audience. So we have to get some story in there that helps explain a bit more. I think that's all happening. Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character - without giving too much away - is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group."

But since actress Radha Mitchell (from the first Silent Hill) has not yet officially signed on to return, we'll have to see how this works out. And as far as making the film more accessible, it sounds like what made this film appealing and enjoyable to fans was the extreme violence and gore, and so trying to appeal to a wider audience is going to hurt those elements (it'll probably be PG-13). In addition, fans who want more of the same might not get that, as Carmody says director Christophe Gans doesn't seem interested in returning. "I don't think he wants to come back. He'll have some input for sure. In his mind, I think he wanted to do the first one and for this he's very happy to consult, but I think he wants to direct something new."

So until we hear anything else, we're not exactly sure how likely it is that this sequel will come to fruition. Since I haven't had a chance to sit down and watch Silent Hill, I don't particularly have an invested interest in its sequel, but I'm sure plenty others have an opinion or two about it. Who should direct instead?

Even though Terminator Salvation was a lackluster installment in that franchise, no fault could be placed on Sam Worthington who, in my opinion, showed up Christian Bale on screen. And with the starring role in Avatar later this year, he's quickly becoming one of the most demanded actors in Hollywood. And we can add another project to his roster as Mania reports Worthington has signed on for an adaptation of Rick Remender's upcoming comic series, The Last Days of American Crime, a futuristic story where the government is set to roll out mind-control technology that will kill the criminal impulse in all citizens.

Of course chaos descends on America's cities as the country braces for the new order, and career criminal Graham Brick (Worthington) is forced to accelerate the heist of his career with an untested new crew in order to beat the deadline. I'm hooked already. Series writer Rick Remender has actually been writing and developing the screenplay for the film concurrently with the comic series so this should be a very efficient and accurate transition from page to screen. On the style of the story, Remender says:

"It's really motivated by [David] Mamet's 'Heist' film and James Ellroy's [novel] 'American Tabloid.' Ellroy being an example of the kind of hard-boiled crime that has a socio-political backdrop and Mamet's 'Heist' a very well-thought out film that focuses on the heist itself."

That definitely sounds like a fun story, and after Remender revealed Worthington's involvement in the project, he also teased that more casting announcements were on the way: "The people that they're bringing in are all big A-list Hollywood people." I can't wait to see who else is joining this project in addition to Worthington. Mark this down as one of the few adaptations that I'm actually excited to see. And while we're waiting, you might as well pre-order the comic from Amazon. Best to get acquainted with it beforehand!

On the eve of the release of New Moon, Summit has debuted the trailer for Remember Me, starring their money-making hunk Robert Pattinson. However, don't write this off so quickly, it also stars Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, and Emilie de Ravin as the love interest. And honestly, this was looking really good until all of the cheesy lines like: "I'm undecided." "About what?" "Everything..." I think the father-son story will be a lot more interesting than the love story, but you never know, it could be a good movie overall. I'll probably see it anyway, it looks like a good indie, why not give it a a chance? Anyway, watch the official trailer below!

Have video game movies finally started to get to a point where a high profile star like Brad Pitt can lead them? Variety announces that Pitt's company Plan B and Reliance Big Pictures have purchased the rights to the video game Dark Void from Capcom. They will be developing a feature film based on the game as a potential franchise and starring vehicle for Pitt. The game isn't even out - it'll hit shelves in January for all systems (Xbox, PS3, PC). “As a game, Dark Void was developed with a wide-screen mentality – a world full of adventure presented in cinematic scope and scale,” Capcom senior VP Germaine Gioia said of the game.

Dark Void centers on a a cargo pilot named Will who, after crashing in the Bermuda Triangle, ends up in a parallel universe where a band of humans must fight an alien threat they had long been thought extinct. Will and the other humans are outmanned but have a number of weapons and powers to help them beat back the alien incursion. You can see a screenshot from the game above and it does look pretty damn cool. Pitt and Co. haven't gone so far as to setup distribution plans yet, so we're not sure how far out this is. They probably need to get a script written and director attached first before they put this into pre-production. Thoughts?

Another adaptation of a "young-adult" book - does this one also include screaming girls? Angryfilms, run by Don Murphy and Susan Montford, has picked up the rights to Lauren McLaughlin's Cycler series of novels, which tell the story of Jill, a suburban teenager who for four days each month turns into Jack, complete with male anatomy and 17-year-old-boy fantasies. Jill has maintained her life of ordinary teenage worries, such as going to the prom and dealing with crush, but that changes when Jack, tired of being locked in his room, begins to escape, causing damage to her social life. Now that sounds like it could be quite an intense movie.

Cycler was first published last year and was followed by a sequel, Re-Cycler, with more sequels on the way. The books have won praise for their unique handling of teen sexuality, with the second being nominated for the American Library Association's Rainbow List. I haven't really read any of these, so I can't speak to their story, but it sounds like an interesting concept. However, I have a feeling that this is just another Twilight wanna-be project. And since this doesn't seem to have the following that Twilight does, maybe they can find a good writer and director to actually do a good job bringing this to the big screen. Anyone interested at all?
