Official Trailer for 'Te Ata' Biopic About a Native American Performer

Te Ata Trailer

"What can you show me that I haven't seen before?" Paladin has debuted the official trailer and poster for an indie biopic titled Te Ata (pronounced TAY AH-TAH), telling the true story of the renowned Chickasaw storyteller who entertained at the White House, befriended the First Lady, performed for European Royalty and on stages around the world in an illustrious career that spanned more than sixty years. Native American actress Q'orianka Kilcher stars as Mary Thompson Fisher (aka Te Ata Thompson Fisher), who dreamed of being on Broadway but was constantly rejected. Born in Indian Territory, and raised on the songs and stories of her Chickasaw tribe, Te Ata's journey to find her true calling led her through isolation, discovery, and love. The cast includes Graham Greene, Gil Birmingham, Brigid Brannagh, Mackenzie Astin, and Cindy Pickett. If you're curious about this film at all, the trailer is definitely worth a quick look. Enjoy.

Elisabeth Moss in First Trailer for HBO's New Short Film 'Tokyo Project'

Tokyo Project Trailer

"You ever spend the night with a stranger?" HBO has unveiled a trailer for a short film they're debuting this October. Tokyo Project is a 30-minute short from director Richard Shepard (Dom Hemingway, The Hunting Party, The Matador), produced by Lena Dunham. Ebon Moss-Bachrach stars as Sebastian, a man on a business trip to Tokyo. He keeps running into a mysterious woman named Claire, as played by Elisabeth Moss. They eventually hook up, but also end up dealing with their own sordid pasts. Co-starring Shu Kakizawa. This obviously reminds me of Lost in Translation, but hopefully it's a bit different. I am always up for anything with Elisabeth Moss, because she is so talented, and this looks like it could be good.

Prolific American Actor Harry Dean Stanton Has Passed Away at 91

Harry Dean Stanton

Sad news to report about a very talented, beloved actor. Harry Dean Stanton has died at age 91 (report via The Guardian) at a hospital in Los Angeles. Stanton has a legendary, prolific actor who appeared in over 100 different roles throughout the years. Many may recognize him because he's probably been in something you've seen, or a movie you love, there's no question about it. Roger Ebert even created the "Stanton-Walsh Rule", saying: "No movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad." Stanton most recently appeared on the new "Twin Peaks" show, playing Carl Rodd, and has a film out this year (titled Lucky). He also dabbled in writing and music, but ended up sticking to acting.

Must Watch Adorable Trailer for JR & Agnes Varda's Doc 'Faces, Places'

Faces, Places Documentary Trailer

"It's funny we didn't cross paths sooner." Cohen Media Group has unveiled an official trailer for Faces, Places, a wonderful documentary starring JR & Agnes Varda, who team up for a road trip around France to photograph and talk with locals in small towns about life and love. Also known as Visages, Villages in French, this film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews. It totally won me over, it's one of the most uplifting, inspiring, lovely films this entire year and it made me so happy (here's my full review). Seriously, you'll leave with a huge smile on your face. The way they bring life to these towns just by talking with people and photographing them is heartwarming. I can't recommend this enough, and I really hope it finds a grand audience. The more people that go see this charming film, the better, it'll bring joy to so many.

Sophia Mitri Schloss Stars in Trailer for Coming-of-Age Film 'Lane 1974'

Lane 1974 Trailer

"You have to understand, sometimes things in life don't happen the way you want them to…" The Orchard has premiered an official trailer for an indie coming-of-age film titled Lane 1974, set in 1974 telling the story of a young teenage girl raised in the communes and dusty back woods of Northern California. Sophia Mitri Schloss stars as Lane, with a cast including Katherine Moennig, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sara Coates, Linas Phillips, Annette Toutonghi, Sarah-Eve Gazitt, and Erik Braa. This almost seems like the all-woman version of Captain Fantastic, about a mother who is raising her family in the woods, free from the typical capitalistic amenities of modern society. It also reminds me a bit of The Glass Castle, about a woman raised by weird parents. I'm still intrigued by this, just not sure if it will have much else to offer.

Trailer for Documentary 'Gilbert' Profiling Comedian Gilbert Gottfried

Gilbert Gottfried Doc Trailer

"He doesn't really filter himself, and I think that's why people are drawn to him." Submarine has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Gilbert, telling the story of the legendary "comedian's comedian" Gilbert Gottfried. Most will recognize Gottfried's voice first and foremost, along with his famous roles in big films like Aladdin and Beverly Hills Cop II, but he's so much more than just a funny voice. This new documentary takes a peek "behind the larger-than-life persona at a more personal story about growing up in Brooklyn and becoming a husband and father late in life." Surprisingly it also "strips the comedic character away to reveal the man behind it." There's some great footage in this trailer, and tons of other comedians talking about him, which is wonderful to see. I'm looking forward to watching this doc at some point soon.

Second Trailer for Kosinski's Wildfire Firefighters Film 'Only the Brave'

Only the Brave Trailer

"When this thing sweeps over you, it's going to feel like the end of the world." Sony has debuted a second trailer for the film Only the Brave, telling the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots firefighters. Directed by Tron Legacy's Joe Kosinski, Only the Brave is about an elite crew of firemen from Prescott, Arizona who battled a wildfire in Yarnell, AZ in June of 2013 that claimed the lives of 19 of their members. The huge cast includes Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, James Badge Dale, Geoff Stults, Andie MacDowell, Ben Hardy, Taylor Kitsch, and Jennifer Connelly. This was titled Granite Mountain Hotshots before being changed to Only the Brave. With so many more dangerous wildfires ablaze right now, I'm not sure if this is good timing or bad timing, but it does seem like this has a positive message.

Watch: Examine the Similarities Between 'Black Swan' & 'The Wrestler'

Black Swan & The Wrestler Video Essay

The latest film made by auteur filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, titled Mother!, is now playing in theaters eveywhere. Aronofsky is a remarkably unique filmmaker, who tells very emotional, visceral stories through intimate filmmaking. Back in 2008 and 2010, Aronofsky made two of his best films - The Wrestler and Black Swan. Both films received many awards, including Venice's Golden Lion for The Wrestler, and the Best Actress Oscar for Natalie Portman in Black Swan. Editor H. Nelson Tracy (who also made the Captain Fantastic book video) has put together a new video essay examining how these two films are very similar, essentially companion pieces, looking at aspects including structure, style and story. This is worth a watch.

Deck the Halls with a Red Band Trailer for Horror 'Better Watch Out'

Better Watch Out Trailer

"Don't worry, I'll protect you." Well Go USA has released an official red band trailer for Chris Peckover's Better Watch Out, a holiday horror movie about a scary home invasion one snowy night. Ever since Mike Dougherty's Krampus a few years ago, I've been hoping we might see some other holiday horror movies that aren't too cheesy. This one looks fun and very freaky, with hopefully some good twists involving the two kids fighting back. It seems to start out pretty conventional, but then gets gnarly in the second half of this trailer, definitely earning that "Home Alone meets The Strangers" quote. The cast includes Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Patrick Warburton, Virginia Madsen, and Dacre Montgomery. Have fun.

Official Trailer for Netflix's 'Kingdom of Us' Documentary About Grief

Kingdom of Us Doc Trailer

"We've all got such different memories…" Netflix has debuted a trailer for a documentary titled Kingdom of Us, from director Lucy Cohen, an emotional look at how a family deals with grief and memories of a traumatic event. This is premiering at the London Film Festival next month before it's available on Netflix. Filmed over two years, the documentary tells the story of a British family – a mother and her seven children, six young women and a young man, whose father killed himself. It focuses more on how they've found strength through grief and relied on memories to get through the hard times. This documentary reminds me of the heartbreaking Dear Zachary in the way it features so much raw footage of the family. It seems like this is going to be a tough watch, but it's also inspiring to see this tragedy examined so lovingly. Have a look.

Another 'Blade Runner' Promo Prequel Short '2048: Nowhere To Run'

2048: Nowhere To Run Short Film

"Don't like my offer, you're welcome to try somewhere else." Warner Bros has unveiled another new promo short film for Blade Runner 2049, a prequel this time set one year before the new movie takes place. A few weeks ago, they unveiled a short titled "2036: Nexus Dawn" featuring Jared Leto's character Niander Wallace talking about manufacturing replicants again. This next new short film is titled "2048: Nowhere To Run" and features Dave Bautista as an outlaw replicant named Sapper. He goes out into the streets of Los Angeles 2048 to sell some replicant leeches, but he loses control when he sees a mother and her child being threatened. I love these short film promos, they're exciting and the perfect way to bring us all back to this world. In the intro, Denis Villeneuve mentions there's three of these short films, so there's one more to come after this one. And only a few more weeks left until this hits theaters. For now - watch below & enjoy.

Trailer for Ridley Scott's 70's Crime Film 'All the Money in the World'

All the Money in the World Trailer

"We look like you, but we're not like you. It's like we're from another planet." Sony Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World, a crime thriller set in the 1970s about a massive kidnapping plot arranged by a left-wing paramilitary organization in Italy. With this now scheduled to open in December, it means (believe it or not!) we're getting two new Ridley Scott movies this year, the other being Alien: Covenant. All the Money in the World stars Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Spacey, Michelle Williams, Timothy Hutton, Charlie Plummer, Andrew Buchan, Olivia Grant, Teresa Mahoney, Romain Duris, and Charlie Shotwell. Ridley Scott always pulls together some of the best casts. This looks so damn good, a nice change from his recent sci-fi, and I dig the setting in Italy in the 70s.
