Review: 'I, Tonya' Brilliantly Captures Darkly Comical Moment in Time

I, Tonya Review

A closeup shot of Tonya Harding's skate crushing a lit cigarette serves as a visual representation of the figure skater as a whole in I, Tonya, a biography of her life and the events that led to her controversial end in the sport. Harding was a force in the skating world: unrefined, rebellious, and unapologetic but with a raw talent that world had never seen before or since. It makes sense Harding's tenure in the figure skating world ended in controversy. I, Tonya, directed by Craig Gillespie, doesn't shy from the darker turns her life took, the film's screenplay working from rumor and the unreliable narration of the people around her. It's a stunning story, dark and comical in equal turns, and the film relays the events in splendid fashion as well as giving us a star-making turn by Australian actress Margot Robbie as the eponymous character.

Final Trailer for Wes Ball's Sci-Fi Action 'Maze Runner: The Death Cure'

Maze Runner: The Death Cure Trailer

"You can't save everyone, Thomas." "I can try." 20th Century Fox has revealed the final theatrical trailer for Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the third and final movie in the sci-fi series. Director Wes Ball tweeted yesterday that this is the "last Maze Runner trailer you're ever gonna see [sic]." This sci-fi series had a small, humble beginning with a movie about a giant maze, then blew up into something much bigger with the second movie, The Scorch Trials, released in 2015, and now it concludes with an all-out, epic, action-packed grand finale. Dylan O'Brien stars as Thomas, and the cast includes Kaya Scodelario, Walton Goggins, Nathalie Emmanuel, Katherine McNamara, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Rosa Salazar, Giancarlo Esposito, Patricia Clarkson, Barry Pepper, Ki Hong Lee, and Jacob Lofland. Even if you haven't been following this series so far, you might want to fire up this trailer - it looks pretty dang cool.

Must Watch: Official Trailer for Robert Rodriguez's 'Alita: Battle Angel'

Alita: Battle Angel Trailer

"It's a harsh world. The strong prey on the weak down here." Whoa. You have to see this! After almost a decade in development, Robert Rodriguez finally went off and made James Cameron's adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel, based on the popular manga series. 20th Century Fox has debuted the first trailer for Alita: Battle Angel, about a deadly cyborg humanoid named Alita, played by Rosa Salazar, who is found in a scrap heap by Dr. Dyson Ido. Rodriguez used James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis' script that has been floating around for years, and Cameron is also a producer along with Jon Landau. So this still has the James Cameron touch (since he was originally supposed to direct), but Rodriguez is at the helm instead. The film's full cast includes Jennifer Connelly, Eiza González, Michelle Rodriguez, Christoph Waltz, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeff Fahey, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, and Casper Van Dien. Get your first look here.

Milo Ventimiglia in First Trailer for Sci-Fi Horror Thriller 'Devil's Gate'

Devil's Gate Trailer

"Some people are better off not being found." IFC Midnight has debuted the first official trailer for a sci-fi creature feature horror thriller called Devil's Gate. The title comes from the location in the film, a small town in North Dakota named Devil's Gate (which does not really exist). This starts out as your typical small town murder mystery involving various shady characters, but then turns into some crazy alien horror half-way through (the trailer) with some freaky shots. Milo Ventimiglia stars as religious fanatic Jackson Pritchard, along with Amanda Schull, Shawn Ashmore, Bridget Regan, and Jonathan Frakes. That actually seems like a cool cast for a sci-fi horror, and maybe there's some cool twists in this for horror fans to enjoy. All the creepy footage with the creature in this trailer is quite effectively scary. Check it out below.

Vintage News Reel US Trailer for 'The Death of Stalin' is Worth a Watch

The Death of Stalin Trailer

"Citizens of America, we need you to make moviegoing great again." IFC Films has debuted a unique teaser trailer for the US release of The Death of Stalin, satirist Armando Iannucci's latest film about Russian politics. This is a peculiar teaser because it's basically a fake B&W news reel talking about how the film is finally going to appear in the US in March after "first conquering Britain" (since it opened there in October). Based on Fabien Nury's graphic novel, the film is about Russian dictator Joseph Stalin's last days and the disorganized chaos of the regime after his death in 1953 and 30 years of iron-fisted rule. Adrian McLoughlin plays Stalin, with an entertaining ensemble cast of characters including Rupert Friend, Steve Buscemi, Olga Kurylenko, Jason Isaacs, Andrea Riseborough, Jeffrey Tambor, Paddy Considine, Michael Palin, and Jonathan Aris. This trailer is worth a watch just to see how unique it is.

Official Trailer for Romero Zombie Movie 'Day of the Dead: Bloodline'

Day of the Dead: Bloodline

"His brain is still working. They're learning." Saban Films has released the official red band trailer for a new zombie movie called Day of the Dead: Bloodline. This is basically a remake of the classic original George A. Romero zombie movie Day of the Dead, released in 1985, though it's being called a "reimagining." The plot is about a group of military personnel and survivalists living in an underground bunker trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. The main character is a young woman named Zoe Parker, played by Sophie Skelton, who is "tormented by a dark figure from her past" - surprise, that figure is now a zombie. The cast includes Johnathon Schaech, Jeff Gum, Marcus Vanco, Mark Rhino Smith, Lillian Blankenship, and Shari Watson. This doesn't look that good at all, but if you need more zombies in your life, have at it.

First Trailer for J.A. Bayona's Sequel 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom'

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Trailer

"Life cannot be contained. Life breaks free…" Universal Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for J.A. Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the action-packed blockbuster sequel to 2015's Jurassic World, which is the current reboot of the Jurassic Park sci-fi dinosaur park series. The plot for this one involves the group going back to Isla Nublar to try and save some dinos before a volcano eruption takes out the entire island. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return as co-stars, along with "Ian Malcolm" himself, Mr. Jeff Goldblum, plus BD Wong, Toby Jones, Ted Levine, James Cromwell, Geraldine Chaplin, and Rafe Spall. So this actually looks pretty damn good, better than I was expecting, but it still seems they're overselling it (more dinosaurs, and a volcano, and everything!). I just hope this one is good.

Rosamund Pike & Daniel Brühl in Trailer for Thriller '7 Days In Entebbe'

7 Days In Entebbe Trailer

"We stop at nothing until all the hostages are safe." Focus Features has unveiled the first official trailer for a thriller titled 7 Days In Entebbe (in the UK it's actually titled simply Entebbe), based on the true story of a hijacking of an Air France flight in 1976. The plane was taken over by hijackers when en route from Tel Aviv to Paris, then forced to land in Entebbe, Uganda in an effort to free of dozens of Palestinians jailed in Israel. The film also shows the "most daring rescue mission ever attempted." The cast includes Rosamund Pike, Daniel Brühl, Eddie Marsan, Ben Schnetzer, Lior Ashkenazi, and Denis Ménochet. This is a very impressive trailer, the footage looks great, the 70's music is perfect. And holy crap, is Rosamund Pike playing one of the hijackers?! Crazy cool. I'm actually really looking forward to seeing this now. Take a look.

Charlie Plummer in Official Trailer for Andrew Haigh's 'Lean on Pete'

Lean on Pete Trailer

You can't get anywhere on your own. A24 has revealed the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Lean on Pete, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year and also played in Telluride, Toronto and London. Andrew Haigh is the critically acclaimed filmmaker behind Weekend and 45 Years, and this is his latest touching drama about a lost boy from Oregon. Charlie Plummer stars as Charley, a teen who befriends a race horse named Lean on Pete. The full cast includes Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny, Travis Fimmel, Amy Seimetz, Steve Zahn, Thomas Mann, and Alison Elliott. I saw this in Venice and it's a good film with some solid performances, but it didn't really win me over in any way. It's just a simple story about a lonely, lost, struggling boy who finds some hope in a horse he befriends. It's definitely worth a look.

Full US Trailer for Crazy Fun Chinese Animated Film 'Have A Nice Day'

Have A Nice Day Poster

"Don't be stupid. Think again." Strand Releasing has debuted the official US trailer for a Chinese animated film that is one of the craziest things you'll see all year. Have A Nice Day is a violent, brutal animated film from China, made by writer/director Jian Liu, that can pretty much be described as a Tarantino movie. One description says it's a "whirlwind neo-noir" about a bag containing a million yuan that draws various people from shady backgrounds into a bloody conflict. The voice cast includes Xiao Zhang, Lao Zhao, and Fang Yuanjun. This premiered at Berlinale, where I first saw it, and wrote in my review: "As light entertainment, it's a good film worthy of your time to discover," but "as political commentary, it doesn't have much to say."
