Meet Foley Artists Making Sounds for Films in 'Actors of Sound' Trailer

Actors of Sound Trailer

"There's a huge difference between listening and hearing." If you're a movie geek or a filmmaker, you know that foley artists an an important part of the filmmaking process. These people work in grungy studios to create the various sounds and noises we hear in movies. Actors of Sound is a feature-length documentary about foley artists, directed by filmmaker Lalo Molina. This first premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival in 2016, and is finally getting released direct on iTunes this month. "From footsteps to bone cracks, foley artists bring films to life with their imaginative sound effects, but as digital technology goes full speed ahead in 21st century movie-making, can Hollywood's low tech foley artist survive in this high tech age?" This is a great follow up to the sound of Star Wars short doc The Force of Sound that also released this week. Enjoy.

First Trailer for Occult Horror Film 'Pyewacket' Starring Nicole Muñoz

Pyewacket Trailer

"Pyewacket can take many forms, don't trust your lying eye." IFC Midnight has released an official trailer for a horror thriller titled Pyewacket, which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Made by Canadian filmmaker Adam MacDonald (Backcountry), the occult nightmare film is about a girl who puts a curse on her mother for fun, but it suddenly becomes all too real as an evil presence known as Pyewacket begins to make itself known, tormenting both of them. Nicole Muñoz (seen in Tooth Fairy, "Defiance") stars, along with Laurie Holden, Chloe Rose, Eric Osborne, and Romeo Carere. This looks like your standard occult punk rock horror, with a few cool touches but nothing special. It's described as "a complex mother-daughter tale and a frightening fable about our darkest desires." If you're a horror fan, take a peek.

Berlinale 2018: 'Shut Up and Play the Piano' is a Brilliantly Clever Doc

Shut Up and Play the Piano Review

Step into the mind of this musical genius for just a moment, and be inspired by his ingenuity and originality. Shut Up and Play the Piano is a documentary about the musician known as "Chilly Gonzales", who is actually a Canadian man named Jason Beck. Beck is a virtuoso, a one-of-a-kind musician and this film is a befittingly unique profile of him and his life. It's a massively creative, clever film about a massively creative, clever musician and will inspire anyone to stop caring about judgment and let your deeply honest creativity express itself. I loved this film so much. I didn't even know who Chilly Gonzales was before this, and now I'm a huge fan. I've already bought a few of his albums. The title is a reference to fans who often tell Chilly to just shut up and play the piano, and he does. Oh, does he ever play, and it's sumptuous. Discover this film.

Mackenzie Davis in Official Trailer for 'Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town'

Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town Trailer

"Nothing's over until I say it is." Shout Studios has unveiled the official trailer for an indie comedy titled Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town, which premiered last year at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It's a bold title and I'm impressed they didn't change out the F word in it, as most studios would be afraid to use that. But F yes! The incredibly talented Mackenzie Davis stars in Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town as a rocker girl maniac who desperately needs to figure out how to get to the other side of Los Angeles in order to break up the party that her ex-boyfriend is attending. Davis is pretty much great in anything she does. But the cast gets even better! It also includes Lakeith Stanfield, Haley Joel Osment, Alia Shawkat, Carrie Coon, Annie Potts, Alex Russell, Rob Huebel, and Ryan Simpkins. It looks like a ton of fun, so buckle up.

Adorable Full-Length Trailer for WB's New Panda IMAX Movie 'Pandas'

Pandas Trailer

"Qian Qian was born in captivity, so learning to thrive in the wild won't be easy." Aw, aren't they so cute and cuddly?! Warner Bros has debuted another new full-length trailer for the IMAX documentary titled Pandas, a nature documentary about everyone's favorite black & white bears. Filmed with IMAX cameras and being presented in IMAX & IMAX 3D, this takes place mostly around Chengdu Panda Base in China. It follows a few researchers and documents the re-introduction of a panda into the wild. This is made by the filmmakers behind the other nature docs Born to be Wild and Island of Lemurs: Madagascar, and features a score composed by Mark Mothersbaugh (of Thor: Ragnarok). As you can hear in this trailer, the movie also features narration by Kristen Bell, talking about the panda program and these wonderful creatures. Anyone want to bet this is going to be a huge hit? Pandas is rated G (oh yes!), and opens in theaters in April.

Geoffrey Rush & Armie Hammer in Official US Trailer for 'Final Portrait'

Final Portrait Trailer

"Your whole life can be swallowed up…" Sony Pictures Classics has debuted a new official US trailer for the film Final Portrait, which was one of my favorites from last year's Berlin Film Festival. Glad it's finally hitting US theaters soon. The film stars Geoffrey Rush as accomplished Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti, an eccentric painter and sculptor who lived in Paris for the the last years of his life. The story is all about his friendship with an American journalist named James Lord, played by Armie Hammer, who visited in the 1960s. Giacometti asked Lord to sit down for a portrait, to be finished in only a few days, but it ends up going on and on for months - his final portrait. This also stars Clémence Poésy and Tony Shalhoub. I wrote in my review from last year's Berlinale: "Rush gives such an outstanding performance, it's compelling and thoroughly enjoyable to watch him." I still recommend giving this one a watch when you can, it's good.

Official US Trailer for 'Ismael's Ghosts' Starring Cotillard & Gainsbourg

Ismael's Ghosts Trailer

"You no longer exist." Magnolia Pictures has debuted a new US trailer for the upcoming theatrical release of Arnaud Desplechin's Ismael's Ghost, which was the opening night film at last year's Cannes Film Festival. Despite this honor, the film received mostly mediocre reviews and it's nothing special. It stars Mathieu Amalric as a filmmaker named Ismael, who is just about to begin shooting his next feature. However, his long lost former lover suddenly shows up out of nowhere, freaking him out, sending him into a mental "tailspin". Marion Cotillard plays his former lover, and Charlotte Gainsbourg plays his current lover, who also freaks out. The cast also includes Louis Garrel, Alba Rohrwacher, Hippolyte Girardot, and Samir Guesmi. I saw this in Cannes and forgot about it fairly quickly, even though I really do like the cast.

Halle Berry & Daniel Craig in First Official Trailer for L.A. Drama 'Kings'

Kings Trailer

"Best thing to do in any situation - is do what you want to do." The Orchard has debuted the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Kings, the latest feature from acclaimed Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven (of the film Mustang previously - which you should watch ASAP if you haven't seen it yet). Set in Los Angeles in 1992 right before the infamous L.A. riots erupted, the film is about a family in South Central. Halle Berry stars as the mom, with Daniel Craig, and a full cast including Issac Ryan Brown, Lamar Johnson, Kaalan "KR" Walker, and Rachel Hilson. This film already premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and arrives in limited theaters this April. It looks like an engaging, heartfelt drama with some very emotional moments. This seems like a good double feature with Justin Chon's Gook. Take a look.

Berlinale 2018: Bekmambetov's 'Profile' is a Cautionary Internet Tale

Berlinale - Profile

There's another new film this year telling a thrilling story told entirely through computer screens. This one is titled Profile, and it's directed by Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Wanted, Ben-Hur), who also produced the other computer screen film Search (which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and I wrote a glowing review of here). Profile tells a completely different story than Search - it's about a journalist from London who tries to connect with an ISIS recruiter online for a story about how ISIS recruiters use the internet to lure women. Surprise, surprise, she ends up getting in way too deep and essentially falls for the same tricks and traps that the other women did. It's a captivating thriller about technology, for sure, but it's still a bit gimmicky and a bit manipulative, and not as good as it really could be.

'The Force of Sound' Doc Trailer About the Sound Design in 'Star Wars'

The Force of Sound Trailer

"Sound is not just a layer we put on top of the storytelling, it is the storytelling." ABC News has unveiled a trailer for a new short documentary titled The Force of Sound, a behind-the-scenes look at sound design in Star Wars - specifically focusing on Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is nominated for Sound Mixing and Sound Editing at the Academy Awards. The film takes viewers inside Skywalker Ranch to learn about how they craft all of the remarkable sounds in the Star Wars movies, from the lightsabers to BB-8 to the animals and creatures and everything else. The documentary is available to stream online for free starting today, Tuesday, so if you want to watch it after catching this trailer you don't have to wait at all.

First International Trailer for Christian Petzold's 'Transit' from Berlinale

Transit Movie Trailer

Hot on the heels of its premiere in-competition at the Berlin Film Festival this weekend, a trailer has arrived for the new film by German filmmaker Christian Petzold (Jerichow, Barbara, Phoenix) titled Transit. This film is set in modern times even though the story is actually based in WWII, with various people trying to escape from France on ships to America or Mexico. Franz Rogowski stars a man fleeing Germany, who ends up stuck in Marseille, encountering others trying to escape and get out of Europe, they all need transit papers for safe passage. The full cast includes Paula Beer, Godehard Giese, Lilien Batman, Maryam Zaree, Barbara Auer, and Matthias Brandt. I saw this at Berlinale and it's a great film, commenting on contemporary issues with immigration through a story from WWII - read my full review here. Watch below.

Toni Collette & Matthew Goode in First Trailer for Indie 'Birthmarked'

Birthmarked Trailer

"You can't raise kids like caged animals!" Vertical Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Birthmarked, about the trials and tribulations and craziness of parenting. From Canadian director Emanuel Hoss-Desmarais, this stars Toni Collette and Matthew Goode as two scientists who decided to give up their work and become parents (for research). The main concept is that, being scientists, they set out to raise three genetically different children into becoming a genius, an artist and a pacifist. But years later, they realize that despite their best efforts, their children are simply "average" and really nothing special. The cast includes Michael Smiley, Suzanne Clement, Fionnula Flanagan, Jordan Poole, Megan O'Kelly, and Anton Gillis-Adelman. This looks a bit awkward and amusing, worth checking out.
