Latest Contest (March 7): 300

So, in running events in theaters here, we've handed out some 4,897 posters (both full size and minis) to people at the movie theater. Yes, you heard that number correctly, we've given out a massive 4,897 posters, around 40% of which were full size ones, the same full size ones you buy at for $24.99, but double-sided. And in handing that many out, what I've started to realize is that people really don't seem to care or want the posters. Now, when a certain one comes along that people are really excited for (Pirates 2 for example), then people feed on them like pigeons and bread. So what I've decided to do is host a weekly giveaway for a few posters from our collection (even for films not yet released).

(First off, I need to preface by saying one of my favorite sites as of current is the outstanding, where you can find EVERY poster that has come out every year.)

To start off this discussion, I've got to say that posters are an integral part of a movie's marketing campaign. They're made in the look and the style of the movie, so that when you think of it, and its title, you think of the poster and the way it looks and the font it uses. In turn, the website and additional advertising is all designed off of the poster's look. You go to or Yahoo Movies and the image they use to reference a movie is its poster. Posters are great, there are some fantastic ones and some awful ones out there. They're really what make the image of a movie in people's minds. You see them at the theater, lined along the walls, announcing everything upcoming, and you get excited.

Posters, despite this talk of all their image and excitement, really seem to die down when you talk about them being in a home, on a wall. Are people out there just not that excited about them? Or do you just have to find the right one for the right movie? I hand them out and no one really seems to care that much for them, they just throw them aside. But then I read people's discussions online and they're excited. Every movie news site in the world posts an article about the "latest Transformers poster" that just came out because it's huge news! But is it really? If the moment someone posted "new poster!" and you had the chance to get a full size version of that poster, how much would you pay, what would you do to get one for free? Would you put it on your wall in your home and leave it up for many months to come? I feel more often than not the worst happens and posters that are actually taken home don't deserve as much highlight as they should. But I could be entirely wrong, I could just be imagining all of this!

To create some excitement and to really shine a spotlight on posters, we're going to run a weekly contest for some full size posters. All you'll need to do is check back every Wednesday for the latest posters we have to give out.

Well I'm not gonna enter this week because I didnt care too much for this movie. But I do think you have a great idea with the giving away of posters. And I agree with you about how they help with the marketing. Maybe we will some Saw 3 posters in the weeks too come.

Stephen on Oct 15, 2006

I have a pirate flag (duh), and bunch of posters from rock shows I've been to. The posters are up there for the sentimental value, and the flag shows my commitment to software piracy.

Cowcatcher on Oct 15, 2006

Well, I had a couple before I joined the Air Force, but I never got them sent to me. I had Requiem for a Dream and a Fight Club poster up. I chose the 2 because they were both pretty awesome movies and Requiem for a Dream pretty much kept me away from drugs forever. Fight Club just had one of the best twists I'd ever seen and it is one of my favorite movies.

Bryan Carey on Oct 15, 2006

I've got a Jack Kerouac poster on my wall, simply because he's awesome (both for his writing and the way he lived his life). I've had a few others, but most recently a Scanner Darkly poster (because it is an excellent movie). Thanks for this giveaway.

Michael Kranz on Oct 15, 2006

I've got three movie posters on my wall right now: Reservoir Dogs, Scarface, and Fight Club. They're all up on my wall because first and foremost, they are all great and (at their releases) groundbreaking. I also enjoy the style and layout of each poster. Scarface, because of the reversal of foreground and background relationships. Reservoir Dogs, because it has a natural eye-catching look to it with its black and white photo in supplemented by the in-your-face color of red. Finally, Fight Club (my favorite movie), also has that great attention grabbing look to it with the contrasting title, the cropped photos of the pro/antagonist, the big soap bar, and then the tagline: "Mischief. Mayhem. Soap." Great posters, great movies.

ToxicShokk on Oct 15, 2006

A poster for Aliens, because I first saw it when I was very young and it scared the crap out of me, so it's only appropriate that when I grew up it became one of my favorite movies.

Brian Walker on Oct 15, 2006

I've got a poster of "Borat" on my wall because it will be worth millions when it's released.

Emmett on Oct 15, 2006

I've got two posters of almost every biological pathway in the body on my wall. I use it to intimidate people. There's also a poster for Zardoz outside my room. Why? Read this review - - and then watch it. It's a cinematic "WTF".

Ian on Oct 15, 2006

Currently I've got two St. Pauli Girl poster's with a Killian's Irish Red poster in the middle to prevent any cat fights. I'm a college student and further the streotype for our love of beer, and hot women of course. 😀

TomCat on Oct 15, 2006

In my room I have: Snakes on a Plane - I don't think I need to explain why The Clash - One of my favorite bands a poster with Bluto wearing his College shirt, cause I love Animal House Dark Side of the Moon - Love the album The Matrix - One of my favorite movies ever. A Clockwork Orange - crazy movie I'm also planning on purchasing a Raiders of the Lost Arc poster, because it's my all-time favorite movie.

Aaron Abrahamson on Oct 15, 2006

I had a Scarface poster in my room at the moment basically because it's one of the best movies I've ever seen, Al Pacino was pretty B.A. in it. I had a Halo 2 poster in my room last year at the house because I was a Halo 2 fiend during the year, I'm pretty sure I easily logged more hours on my X-Box playing that then the number of hours that I slept.

Brad Stroner on Oct 15, 2006

Well, I have only one movie poster on my wall at this time -- Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas". I have this poster on my wall, since it was one of the first movies I saw that I actually remember today.. If I were to have another poster, it would definitely be Super Troopers or Fight Club. I loved both of those movies. Come to think of it, I'm pretty inclined to go out and buy a Super Troopers one right now.. Thanks for bringing this to my mind!

Jordan on Oct 15, 2006

I have a Linkin Park poster on my wall because it takes me back to middle school when that was all the music I used to ever listen to, I have a Nissan Frontier Prerunner poster because it was free from Nissan, a bunch of different car posters, because, ummm, I love cars, and a Simpsons poster because that show RULES.

blitzoid on Oct 15, 2006

I've got a Ghostbusters poster, Shawshank Redemption, Blow, Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Blues Brothers, The Big Lebowski, and Back to the Future. I absolutely love collecting posters and movies are a big part of who I am. I love being surrounded with greatness 🙂

I currently have Army of Darkness and Taxi Driver posters up on my wall. They represent the two sides of my film collection. Guilty pleasures and film marvels.

Josh D on Oct 15, 2006

The Empire Strikes Back, of course. What an amazing movie, regardless if you're a nerd or not. I mean come on!

Erik on Oct 15, 2006

Had Ocean's Eleven up because I thought it was the best heist movie.

Charles on Oct 15, 2006

I have a Clockwork Orange poster on my wall, mainly because I have always loved the awkwardness and originality of that movie. Similarly, you can find a poster for Brazil on my wall. I've always been a Utopian fan.

Josh on Oct 15, 2006

I have a cloth poster of '...And Justice For All' by Metallica by my bed, because lets face it, Metallica kicks ass.

Ben on Oct 15, 2006

I had an iron maiden poster on my wall when I was little. More or less because I thought it was cool. This will be no exception.

Alex on Oct 15, 2006

I have a slightly ripped Scarface poster that was damaged while moving. I'm a huge fan of the movie and put it up after a friend of mine gave it to me. Also a Nirvana poster I've had for years. Sadly, it's also showing some wear. They're one of my favorite bands.

Drew on Oct 15, 2006

I have a Muhammed Ali poster where he knocks Sonny Liston out in the first minute of the first round and a Michael Jordan poster, both given as gifts. Ali kicks ass

Manan on Oct 15, 2006

I have a Mars Volta poster up, 'cause they're the greatest band since Pink Floyd whom I also have on my wall. I have a lot of trippy posters on my wall, a Dali painting, and a Fear and Loathing poster. There's a huge empty spot on my wall though, and a humongous Beerfest poster would really tie the room together.

Campbell on Oct 15, 2006

I have my favorite poster up right now, a Kyuss/Melvins concert poster from a german show in 1995. It's Frank Kozik and it's basically just an enormous, sinister skull with "KYUSS - MELVINS" and "alle ist todt" on it, I love the shit out of it. That and a big poster of Clint Eastwood's head when he's glaring at Tuco and the noose is around his neck in that scene in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

jack on Oct 15, 2006

I have a "student crossing" poster up, because I'm a student. I have dogs playing poker as a poster as well, because I play poker. I also have a poster of Henry Rollins on my wall, because he is an entertaining person 🙂

Dave on Oct 15, 2006

I have a post of Spider Jerusalem from the comic series Transmetropolitan and A poster of the Maxell "Blown Away" Man they sent me for free. Both of them are up because they look awesome.

Jarrett Rainier on Oct 15, 2006

I have no posters currently on my wall (I didn't bring any to my college dorm), but I used to have one for Kill Bill Vol. 1. Why? Why not - it's Tarintino, it's Uma Thurman she's got a sword. And it was free (local - and since closed - convience store gave it to me). Jeez, man, what was I supposed to do? Let it get thrown in the dumpster. Plus, it always entertained pseudo-hipster girls, too: "Kill Bill? Isn't that by the guy who made Reservoir Dogs? I loved that movie". And even though I didn't, the poster almost never failed to impress.

Mark Milner on Oct 15, 2006

I have a rasterized V For Vendetta comic strip taking up one of my walls, if that counts.

Xacto Wife on Oct 15, 2006

I really loved Beerfest. I can't wait for Potfest to come out so i could possibly have a beerfest poster right next to a potfest poster. Make my dreams come true!

Patrick on Oct 15, 2006

I have never had a poster in my room, ever. Not due to lack of affinity towards posters, but mostly due to lack of ability to get quality posters with films I like. I really want a Beerfest poster, as the movie was one of my favorites of 2006. Thanks for giving away posters anyways though.

Jeff on Oct 15, 2006

Alex on Oct 15, 2006

Some people use posters as decoration, but mine are for covering up holes in my wall. On my wall i have two grand theft auto: vice city posters which came free with GTA:VC a jumbo darkside of the moon poster, and my pride and joy, my poster of england's loudest band, SPINAL TAP!

Austin Buerosse on Oct 15, 2006

I have a George W. Bush quotes poster up in my dorm room, the "Shadow Government" poster from Jon Stewart's "America: the Book", a "The Big Lebowski" poster, one of Clint Eastwood from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", and a Jimi Hendrix poster. All of them have shaped who I am, in one way or another.

Jack on Oct 15, 2006

The two posters i have up in my room at the moment are of Mos Def and Fight Club. I chose these two posters simply because i love both the music of mos def and the movie Fight Club. They also look cool, so that helps.

Gimbo on Oct 15, 2006

Right now I have the original Ninja Turtles movie poster, Superman Returns, Alien vs Predator(Predator mask version) and ET. I put these up because they are basically all the movies or characters I grew up with.

Dario Monaco on Oct 15, 2006

I've got the generic "Hey, I'm in college!" band posters up in my room. The Doors, Rush 2112, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. But DAMN do I want a beerfest poster.

NakedOldGuy on Oct 15, 2006

I have had several posters but my favorite is without a doubt a promotional one from the restaurant 'Noodles and Company'. I went there often with my friends and as a birthday present, the manager closed down to all patrons but my friends and then gave it to me to seal the deal. It was the best birthday I have ever had and it always reminds me of that moment. Also it looks pretty cool, that doesn't hurt.

Jiboko on Oct 15, 2006

Full sized replica from "Goldfinger" because James Bond is awesome, and the poster was a gift.

J.D. on Oct 15, 2006

I have a "Outlaw Star", "Bruce Lee", "Van Nistelrooy" (Manchester United), a Missouri State Bears poster, and a "Trigun" poster. I went through a brief anime stage during my middle school years and I've never gotten around to changing them. I've been watching Manchester United soccer for along time and I have just recently got accepted into Missouri State college. I rarely have people over because I am kind of embarassed of the "kiddiness" of my room and I feel that this poster will help change that.

Jimmy Cowart on Oct 15, 2006

I currently have a Family Guy poster and a Rat Pack poster on my bedroom walls. Being as I am a college student, I feel that a Beerfest poster would go well with both my living style and my drinking.

Brian on Oct 15, 2006

original two sided british Lock Stock poster. Not only was it huge and looked cool as hell, it's one of the best English flicks ever.

ryan on Oct 15, 2006

I have a Parasite Pals ( poster on my wall right now, that I picked up in Chinatown in San Francisco a year or two ago. I love it because it's quirky and has awful english. I have a HalfLife2 poster up, too, because I'm kind of a nerd. I like video games. I have never had a movie poster and thus, it would be cool to have one. 🙂

Amber on Oct 15, 2006

I have a poster of The Tick and one of Ethan Hawke's Hamlet, I thought they would go well with all the other random crap in my room.

Track on Oct 15, 2006

The only movie poster I have on my wall is a 36" Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas poster, the reason is obvious for why it's on my wall - it's my favorite movie, and makes my room badass. Hoping to win Beerfest!

Tom on Oct 15, 2006

I've got up a clockwork orange poster from the film, but it isnt a screenshot because the book > the movie. I've also got up a Knockaround Guys poster because thats just a badass movie. Simpsons poster styled like the Sopranos. I've got up a 5-minute film festival poster from highschool because my entry got honorable mention (lol it was a p.o.s.) I've got a DC skate team poster, i'm not a skater, but my friend is a big skater and he got it signed and whatnot and gave it to me. A Yamakasi poster is up from france when I visited there and lastly a King Kung Fu poster.

Malcom Ice on Oct 15, 2006

My girlfriend, poster sized - That's self explanitory Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven - Need I say more? Dave Matthews Band - Rounding out the stoner band list... And I have room for more!

BinarySka on Oct 15, 2006

The only movie poster I had was of "Boondock Saints". I had just watched the movie and a poster sale event was going on. It was like a sign, but the only style I liked was only available in a mini. I also bought a poster of "Son of Man" to accompany it on my wall. The only other posters I had were one $5 car Porsche poster I got nine years and a couple of free Marines posters four years ago. All of them are still on the walls except that the "Boondock Saints" one falls about weekly and a night-vision Marines poster is on the ceiling over my bed.

Jason on Oct 15, 2006

I've got a Muhammad Ali poster and a giant Lord of the Rings map on my wall. A Beerfest poster would be a nice addition, I think.

T on Oct 15, 2006

I have a Girl next door poster on my wall currently. Had a Serenity poster. Got some posters of some random bikini girls, and a Dropkick Murphys poster as well. Beerfest or The Departed would both be awesome to add.

Ive had all 3 lord of the ring posters up on my wall, along with pirates of the carribean 1 poster.

MentosMan on Oct 16, 2006

I have had a few posters of Chicago Bears players growing up because of my Chicago heritage, and a Mortal Kombat poster of the original game because it was my doorway to [an albeit violent] adulthood in video games. I now have a large poster of Frank Zappa beside my bed because of his unnatural ability to consistently prove how horrible music is these days.

Jim on Oct 16, 2006

My entire wall is postered currently: 1. I

Michael Rosenblum on Oct 16, 2006

I have a huge Italian Job poster on my wall that I got when a theater was throwing it out, plus I loved that movie and you know, Charlize Theron. I also have some smaller Sin City posters. Gotta love the noir aspect, and the actors all all top-notch.

Roy on Oct 16, 2006

I've got the kill bill poster with uma in her yellow motorcycle suit and her sword, the one that came with the first dvd. That one is up because it is awesome. I also have a star wars episode III one. That one is behind my door for the most part though, I don't like it that much, but i don't want to throw it away.

i have a trainspotting poster on my wall. it's really the poster for the soundtrack, but it's still awesome. i got it when i worked in a small record store. trainspotting was such a great movie the way it was filmed and the way music was incorporated. trainspotting lives ont he wall above my tv, so it is one of hte main focal points of my living room. i also have a giant poster of robert smith in my stairway. when i first put it up, i scared the crap out of myself while brushing my hair because i saw the reflection in the mirror. when i was in middle and high school, i used to collect the music posters that the video store would throw out to hang on my wall. i just wanted to post, i'm not really interested in a beerfest poster. i'm excited about the marie antionette one, so i'll check back next week. 🙂

The only posters for movies that I've ever had on my walls were for Star Wars Ep. 4-6 when I was younger. I loved the movies, like most other middle school boys. Right now I have a poster of Keira Knightly on my wall, but that isn't a specific movie.

Only poster I have on my wall is one of Johnny Cash because, hey... Johnny Cash. My walls need some life (and color). The Man in Black is lonesome at the Hammersmith Odeon.

I have a black and white poster of Robert Deniro from "Taxi" from that famous "You lookin' at me?" scene. I put it up because everyone says that line but no one has seen the film. I use this poster to educate people about that line.

I have two posters on my wall currently.. and one that has been long gone. The two currently up are one stolen from the movie theatres of Orange County. The poster is 11feet by 5feet. It's big. It's on my ceiling. I loved the movie, and Jack Black is hilarious. The next poster is a Jewel (the singer) poster from her Pieces of You days. It's signed. She's the greatest singer ever.. and I love her. :3 The post that has been long gone was a Backstreet Boy poster. I got it in 3rd grade because it was in one of those scholastic book order forms, and all the girls wanted it.. and my girlfriend ordered it, so I had to. Yeah. It came down quickly after it went up.

Thanks for making movies even better! I love movies and it is always great to bring that theater feeling home with these great posters. I actually sent in for Casino Royale........hoping to get it(Movie was great!)

I have a lot of posters and I always have to buy them. Even got a job at a movie theater, but the one in charge takes crappy care of them, and for people like me who appreciate their artistic value, it ruins the purpose of collecting them. It is more than remembering a movie, it is the art, so people, if you dont want them, find someone who does, cause there is someone out there who can't afford to buy them.

Spiderman - Best comic book adaptation. Buffy and Angel together - A great show. Boondock Saints - Another of my favorite movies. Walk the Line - Great movie about a great artist. Top Gun - One of the best fighter pilot movies. X-Files - A wonderful and thrilling show that I grew up with. 24 Jack Bauer - Another great show.
