David Duchovny Says X-Files 2 Progressing Smoothly
The last update we had on X-Files 2 was way back in March, which said that it would be coming for sure in 2008. This is the sequel that's been endlessly delayed, but both reports, including the one today, have come from David Duchovny himself, which means this time it doesn't sound like another false hope. Today's progress update comes from IGN which caught Duchovny at a "Californication" panel and fired a few X-Files 2 questions his way.
Duchovny said that he's finally supposed to get a script in the next week and that it's actually progressing quite smoothly. Here's an excerpt from the interview over at IGN.
"I'm actually supposed to see it next week! Before I would just say that [there was a movie] because they told me, but now, after talking to Chris [Carter] -- he's been giving me progress reports -- and he actually called yesterday, and said 'Next week, you should have something to read.'"
The script is being written by Chris Carter, who created the series and also write the first X-Files movie, as well as Frank Spotnitz. The plan is also to have Carter direct the film in his directorial debut. Other confirmed details are that Gillian Anderson is on board and that it is still aiming for release sometime in 2008.
I'm looking forward to this quite a bit, as I'm a fan of the film without having really watched the TV series at all. Let's hope they can pull off an even better sequel, even though that's quite rare nowadays.
*giggles like a schoolgirl* Sweet. Finally! Although, it's not gonna follow the mythology at all. It's supposed to be a "monster of the week" kinda thing. But I'll take what I can get.

Does anyone even remember the X-Files anymore? I mean, I watched that show religiously during the 90's but was somewhat dissapointed by the last few seasons, especially by the amount of retconing that was done in some of the later episodes e.g. the fate of Mulder's sister. The first movie was average and I doubt that the second will be better, considering that six years have past since the last time we saw Mulder and Scully.

I'm a die-hard fan and I sorta agree with you. However, Carter has stated that it will be a stand-alone movie and not part of the mythology. IN other words, it's just gonna be a nice scary movie with Mulder and Scully. Good news for horror fans, sci-fi fans and the die-hards like me. I think it's a pretty good idea...we'll see.

X-Files Movie 2 is a financial cash cow - Fox will be insane not to settle the dispute and let Chris Carter do as he pleases. The same generation that fell in love with it in the 90s are now the deep-pocketed individuals who will pay to see this movie just for the nostalgia alone of seeing Mulder and Scully. Remember, in the 90s, X-files was a phenomenon that so pervaded our society that it entered our vocabulary, culture...much as the craze surrounding Harry Potter today. I agree, the first movie was average, but mostly because its plot had become too convoluted in the mytharc that was only accessible to the most devoted of xphiles. I am glad that it will be a 'supernatural' thriller, which in my opinion, were the best plots in the series. The characters M and S are so multilayered and rich material for the movie too. I sincerely hope alot more thought and planning will go into this movie, as I believe the team was under time pressure during the last movie. X-files, we are waiting!

"The X-Files" is not only still my favorite TV show of all time, but it's become a cultural icon. Nothing will make be happier than to see Mulder and Scully on the big screen again. The first movie was basically a bridge between 2 seasons of the show and I admit that I enjoyed it immensely. I hope this new movie captures the humor and chemistry all die hard fans have enjoyed for most of the primetime run of the show. It will be interesting to see what Chris Carter comes up with this time around!
