Charlize Theron Joins Tom Cruise in The Tourist
by Alex Billington
November 4, 2008
Actress Charlize Theron has been cast alongside of Tom Cruise in action thriller The Tourist from Spyglass Entertainment. The film is a remake of the 2005 French film titled Anthony Zimmer and is being directed by Bharat Nalluri (of Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day most recently). Theron will play an Interpol agent who uses an American tourist in an attempt to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair. The film follows a similar plot to the original, except a switch in the sex of certain characters. This version of the script was first written by Julian Fellowes, of Gosford Park and Vanity Fair, and is currently being polished by Christopher McQuarrie, of Usual Suspects and Valkyrie.
The original film that this is based on (that starred ex-Bond girl Sophie Marceau) sounds very interesting and seems like it's worth checking out. Unfortunately Nalluri really doesn't have enough past directing experience for me to immediately declare this remake as the next big thing, but with Cruise and Theron both attached and a plot that sounds pretty awesome, I'm at least interested. Who doesn't love deceptive crime thrillers with double-edged characters and mysterious storylines? In fact, we're in need of more of these kinds of stories in Hollywood, given they've been rather sparse recently. Hopefully this will turn out to be as good as I'm expecting it to be, but who knows if Nalluri will pull it off. Anyone seen the original?

Anthony Zimmer was a little slow but good. I hope it'll be a better movie with this cast. I think Tom Cruise fits in this kind of character.

I've seen the original, very good acting from Sophie Marceau and Yvan Attal, the story was very intriguing, old noir ambience and a dash of Hitchcock. The music score was very good, reminiscent, in purpose, of the scores that Bernard Hermann composed for Hitchcock. Anthony Zimmer is a must see. And another remake for Hollywood, it's common policy these days. I would not be interested in this remake if Cruise wasn't on board. He must know something we don't..

Yes, I was about to say that you spoiled it for many of us...unless there is another twist after the twist that you're not telling us.

<> ??? Are you for real. Boy you yanks really should cut down on the crack cocaine before you go into those movie theaters. Look closely at the way the director set up the story...look closely at he way the actors set up "believable characters"...and what you will see is a movie that was so attractive to US film producers that they are ripping it for their own version. I can't think of a better vote of confidence in a film than it being redone within the same decade. "Anthony Zimmer" was one of the best movies in its year of production.
