Javier Bardem Cast in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Biutiful

Oscar winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem will star in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Biutiful. The film is about a man embroiled in shady dealings who is confronted by a childhood friend who is now a policeman. Inarritu wrote the Spanish-language script on his own and will start shooting on location in Barcelona next week. Inarritu's previous films, Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel, were stories he wrote together with Guillermo Arriaga, although the two have since stopped working together due to a fight during Babel (which is well documented here). Bardem was last seen in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona and won the Oscar this year for his performance as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men.
I don't think it's necessary for me to try and convince anyone that Javier Bardem is a great actor, because after No Country for Old Men, I think most people already know he is. My first introduction to Bardem was with The Sea Inside and since then I've been anxiously awaiting for his career to really take off. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, another of my favorite directors, has consistently made very powerful and moving films and I'm looking forward to seeing what areas of human nature he'll explore in Biutiful. This is one of the films that is being produced under the Cha Cha Cha banner, which is the 5-film, $100 million production partnership that Inarritu, Alfonso Cuarón, and Guillermo del Toro made with Focus Features.

Any idea what his role in this will be like? I want to see another dark character like in No Country, but him being able to jump from playing the villain to a swinger in a romantic comedy really shows how talented he is. I'll be looking forward to this though now that I know Cuarons and GDTs production company is involved. Anything with their names is pure gold to me.
