Chiwetel Ejiofor and John Cusack

Next summer we'll most likely see both John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor on the biggest posters, standing at odd angles and staring off into the distance. Cusack and Ejiofor have just been cast in Roland Emmerich's giant summer blockbuster movie 2012. We've featured this project before, but now it's got some faces. 2012 is an apocalyptic natural disaster movie set in 2012 about an academic researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe and makes contact with his double in order to prevent an apocalypse predicted by the ancient Mayans. With Cusack and Ejiofor now on board, I really hope this will be something special, and not another The Day After Tomorrow or 10,000 BC.

Emmerich and crew will begin shooting this July in Los Angeles for a July 10th, 2009 release. If you're curious to read more about the 2012 apocalypse according to the Mayan calendar, we wrote an extensive look at the conspiracy theory back in early March. The original screenplay was said to have "more going for it than the big idea that studios love" and ended up in the hands of Sony after an intense bidding war. It now is apparent that the ideas in the film involve a parallel universe twin on top of the entire apocalypse that threatens all of mankind. This movie is going to be big!

I'm a big fan of both John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor, but moreso Ejiofor. I hope this is his big break, because he's highly underrated and needs a chance to really shine. Unfortunately this seems like much more of a paycheck project for Cusack than it does anything else. I can't even really see him being the big budget apocalyptic savior - can you? I just keep crossing my fingers and hoping this is as good as it all sounds, but worried that Emmerich is just on a downward spiral. How does 2012 sound to you now that Cusack and Ejiofor have been cast?

As atrocious as Emmerich is and as bad as Cusack is in blockbusters... I'll see Ejiofor in anything.

Andrew Wickliffe on May 19, 2008

Are you guys crazy??? Cusack is the front runner for this whole movie! Think of it, John Cusack was in Grosse Pointe Blank, Say Anything, 1408, High Fidelity - sure none of those movies are action packed blockbusters, but they were all very good movies! Although we do fortunately get to see Cusack brutally kick some ass in Grosse Pointe... Ejiofor is great, he really shone in "Inside Man" and "Children of Men" (somewhat similar titles) "Serenity" and I can't wait to see "Redbelt" and "Talk To Me". Come to think of it, NEITHER of these actors has ever been in a blockbuster summer movie. So why all of the favor of Ejiofor then?

Conrad on May 19, 2008

Because I can sense that Ejiofor has the potential, he's just never hit it big yet. Sort of the opposite for Cusack...

Alex Billington on May 19, 2008

What Andrew said ^^^ Ejiofor is a fantastic actor. I loved Redbelt and lots of his other movies.

Neal Coffey on May 19, 2008

If John Cusack has never been in a summer blockbuster, then what type of film is Con Air?

Sean Kelly on May 19, 2008

not a fan of cusack. but ejiofor has been great lately and he needs to be the main role in this movie to make it go anywhere for me. the idea of the movie is great...just saw a small budget movie preview from the same idea and was thinking of how great it would be if they had a great actor in it and some money to make it into an actual movie. do not really like the idea of stopping it threw finding perellal universe and all but owell. should just show us the happenings of the world ending threw one mans eyes and all. his thoughts and fears as he knows there is nothing he can do to stop it but trying at the same time to save his life and the ones he loves lifes. eijofer would be great for anything they put him in though and i am really excited about it because it will be a big movie for him.

"2012 is an apocalyptic natural disaster movie set in 2012 about an academic researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe and makes contact with his double in order to prevent an apocalypse predicted by the ancient Mayans." That's the first time i've read the summary to this film, my god it sounds awful.

Brad on May 19, 2008

If Ejiofar has a prominent role and assuming the plot is a little more... interesting than the summary sounds, I'll definitely see it.

This movie will be a massive hit depending on the money shots i.e. shit blowing up real good. Roland Emmerich is Michael Bay godfather.

Jojo on May 19, 2008

I actually dont mind Roland but this sounds a little too weird as of now.

I like Cusak. I think he's got he's own style of acting and I personally enjoy it. Ejiofor is also very promising but I guess you guys are right, when we think BLOCKBUSTER these guys don't usually pop up in our minds. I think the premise is good. Although I'm totally turned off by anything that has time travel (apart from the BTTF Series and LOST). I hope it's visually stimulating that's what I usually expect from my my big 'Pop Corn, Blockbuster, Friday Night out with friends' movies. What do you guys think makes a good Blockbuster?

Huckpaletos on May 20, 2008

Never seen Ejiofor in anything. Cusack has talent! He made "1408" more suspenseful and enjoyable. Roland Emmerich can benefit from a rich script. One thing's for sure, there seems to be real talent in front of the camera for a major summer blockbuster. That is a tradition I'd like to see being kept. This film is definitely coming together well.

I like Cusack and Ejiofor, but this is being written by Emmerich and Harold Kloser. The two of them co-wrote 10,000 BC (and Kloser is apparently mainly a music composer). So, the acting and special effects can be great but if the story is crap then it will end up being another 10,000 BC or Day After Tomorrow.

cajaygle on May 20, 2008

They should cast Ejiofur as the star, and Cusack as the supporting character. Emmerich's always got these iconic fx shots of 'something you thought you'd NEVER see'. (Lights going out on Earth in 10,000; tidal waves over NY; white house blowin' up;) I know he thinks the search results for 2012 on Google mean he has a built in audience no matter what, but really, they need a story of more enduring interest than "an academic researcher that opens a portal to a parallel dimension". Sounds like a sleeper hit to me, without the "Hit" part.

Emmerich next film after 2012 is a remake of Fantastic Voyage which is one of my all time faves, if done right it could be awesome! I just hope Fantastic Voyage comes out before 12/21/2012 so we can see it before the world comes to an end! lol

john on Jun 16, 2008

I think that is a ridiculous idea, as it is set to close to now. It will be out of date before it hits dvds. Stupid.
