Marlon Wayans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Cast in G.I. Joe

Stephen Sommers's G.I. Joe movie continues to move forward with casting. Marlon Wayans has been cast as Ripcord, the leader of the military unit. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in negotiations to play Duke Hauser's best friend, the science officer that is assigned to the Special Forces unit. This project continues to be shaping up more and more like a major blockbuster event. The cast already includes A-list talent like Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols. Personally, I'm a bit surprised that Josph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to such a project. Until now he's chosen to do heavy character work in indie films like Brick and Mysterious Skin, this is a sharp contrast for him, but I have no doubt he can pull it off.

As for Marlon Wayans, this is somewhat of a departure for him as well, he typically works mostly on comedy projects with the lone exception of Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream where he turned in a shockingly strong performance. I have a feeling he might just add the much-needed comic relief that makes these types of summer blockbusters such entertaining fare. I think he's a great addition to an already great cast.

I can't wait to see who they cast as Duke - he is the field commander and second in command of the G.I. Joe team after Hawk. To many people he is the face of G.I. Joe, and is definitely a fan favorite. Sam Worthington (he's playing one of the leads in James Cameron's Avatar) is in talks to be in the movie as well, but it's known for which character. I feel like Duke, if he's in the script, could surely be a big name as well. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about this project soon as its slated to begin shooting in February.

G.I. Joe is directed by Stephen Sommers (Deep Rising, The Mummy, Van Helsing) and written by both Stuart Beattie and Skip Woods. The movie arrives in theaters on August 7th, 2009.

What!? Joseph Gordon, say it aint so. What's up with all of my favorite actors doing more Hollywood/blockbuster stuff. First Ed Norton does The Incredible Hulk, then Christian Bale signs on for Terminator 4, and now this.

Marlon Wayans? Umm.. NO. That just made me cross this off my list. Anything that guy makes is utter trash.

Heckle I am sorry to tell you that Marlon Wayans was EXCELLENT in Requiem for a Dream. I think he has more range then you are giving him credit. In terms of selling out.... I think that this is a good move for any actor to do such a film like GI Joe. Plus doing films that have a payday afford him the chance to continue doing independent films. Christian Bale sold out far before Terminator 4 if you might remember Batman Begins!!!!! I hate the use of "Selling Out" anyway... see my comments above.

When I was a kid, I would load up my G.I. Joes, and take them outside to my sandbox where I would build Volcanos and bunkers, and act out battles. I was obsessed with everything G.I. Joe. You couldn't pry me away from the TV with a crowbar when the cartoon was on. When I look at the cast that is being put together for this, it puts a pain in my heart. I finally get a chance to see some of my favorite characters come to life on the big screen, and the best they can come up with is Marlon Wayans? With all the great African American characters, why would they choose Ripcord for him?? There's no way anyone can take this movie the least bit serious now. What's next? Is Keenan Ivory Wayans going to play Destro? How cool would this be....Hugh Jackman in a dual role as Xamot and Tomax? Tim Roth as Zartan. Steve Buscemi as Cobra Commander. Robert Redford as (an older) General Hawk. Jason Scott Lee as Quick Kick. Samuel L. Jackson as Roadblock (forget the Heavy Duty stuff). Christian Bale as Flint. My vote would be for Jessica Beil as Lady Jaye. Daniel Day Lewis as anyone he would be willing to play. They make someone up for him. I don't care. How about Dr. Mindbender?

The kid from 3rd Rock? Cool. He can pull off funny and waaaaay deeper subject matter as well. That dude Heckle is a hater. Marlon Wayans has range and besides its not like G.I. Joe will be an oscar contender for best freakin drama people. How about Bale as Duke? What I wanna know is...who's Cobra Commander and Destro?
