Monaghan and Rodriguez Headed to the Future in Fortuna
by Alex Billington

Did you like the concept in The Island? Then check this film out - Fortuna. Dominic Monaghan and Freddy Rodriguez have been cast in the futuristic horror thriller set in the year 2100. Fortuna envisions an Earth where a collapsed economy and climate crises (sound similar?) have eliminated the middle class, leaving a few very wealthy people and the rest in severe poverty. To give hope and avoid revolt, the elite create Fortuna, a mysterious game where one in a thousand wins a big payday and joins the upper classes. But their hidden goal to "reduce poverty" by 30% over 50 years comes with a deadly price tag.
Fortuna is being written and directed by Swiss filmmaker Barthelemy Grossmann (of 13 m² previously), who also stars in the film. This will shoot for only six weeks starting in November; the producer has already compared the sets under construction to those in Soylent Green. I usually enjoy Monaghan and Rodriguez and think they'll do a great job with this. There have been some great sci-fi films coming out of France recently, and hopefully Fortuna is another unique film along those same lines, even though Grossmann is technically Swiss. This sounds like a very interesting concept and I'll be keeping my eye on it for sure.

Awesome...I was wondering what he was up to since they killed him off in Lost... though the timelines are off...I'm thinking 2010 is more realistic than 2100...hopefully we'll get to see The Avengers before the world collapses :o)

To me it sounds like Metropolis but with a game show twist. Freddy Rodriguez and Dominic Monaghan where both fantastic in Planet Terror and LOTR, yet they're highly underexposed actors in my opinion. Hopefully this should boost them into the light a little more.

Yes, this sounds exactly like The Island!! I'm being sarcastic. Wasn't there some other better older more classic film that is a bit more comparable, maybe the original sci-fi film itself, "Metropolis". Derivative crap like "The Island", barely merits mention.
