Must Watch: DreamWorks' Monsters vs Aliens Teaser Trailer

The first trailer for DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs Aliens has hit the web today. Years ago, the government started a special program to put together a ragtag team of monsters for our own protection. As a last resort, on a desperate order from the President, the motley crew of monsters is finally brought out of secrecy and called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction. I've seen quite a bit of this movie and I'm loving all of it so far. I'm not sure how they did it, but I think has DreamWorks finally figured out how to make great animated movies (maybe it was to get rid of Shrek). Either way, this is a great introduction to the film and only our very first look at plenty more to come.

Monsters vs Aliens is directed by DreamWorks filmmakers Rob Letterman (of Shark Tale previously) and Conrad Vernon (of Shrek 2 previously). Oddly, DreamWorks never revealed who the writers were, which makes me a bit worried that this was a studio-wide collaboration. Paramount will debut Monsters vs Aliens in both IMAX 3D and regular theaters on March 27th, 2009 next year. See everyone in theaters!

The blob definitely seems to be the funniest thing in the trailer. "It turns out you don't really need one [a brain]." is pretty amusing!

Not bad...not to bad at all. At least its a fresh new concept and not just a rehash of something we have seen over and over and over again.

Seth Rogen = Win. Hopefully his part is this is bigger than the one in 'Horton Hears a Who!', so even if the film is no good, he can distract me.

hm, doesnt look terrible, however im sure i would be more impressed if they had thought of this before pixar did Monsters Inc, which was a truly original movie.

Looks like a good film. Like how they used the other freaks from the past to help out this time!! GO BLOB AND CREATURE FROM THE SEA... Where is the shrinking man? oh well? Thanks FS.

Pixar > Dreamworks. Sorry but that's the way it is.

Looks like they copied Pixar animation design and figures. The only funny thing was when that guy scanned his ass at the entrance.

oh look. another US animation industry "comedy/adventure". Man, I wonder how long it took the 'story-writing board' to churn out the script for this one. I wonder which of the two monsters will fall in love with each other? I wonder if they'll come to terms with the fact that they're fighting for humanity, but they're "monsters". Man, I just can't wait to see how all of these exciting generic plot points will be dealt with. I really hope someone with some intelligence takes control of at least one decent animation studio in the states. Just like our Hollywood live-action films, it's all about making shit look good with little to no substance in the story. We wouldn't want the plot to go over the heads of our incredibly stupid target audience now, would we?

It probably will be generic, but lots of times generic stuff is funny and sells. That's also the way it is. Gob (Arrested Development), Seth Rogen, Jack Bauer, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, House and Stephen Colbert? Sounds like a kick ass cast. I'm in.

Oh and almost forgot...Dwight Schrute!!!

BEST! TRAILER! EVER! Okay, maybe not the BEST trailer ever but Certainly In The TOP TEN! Let's be honest here, if a trailer is supposed to get you interested in seeing a movie then I AM SO F*CKING INTERESTED in SEEING THIS MOVIE! I'm SO interested I'm having trouble keeping my finger away from the caps lock! I'm not even half kidding. MONSTERS vs ALIENS looks so DAMN FREAKING INTERESTING! March you say? MARCH? I gotta wait until MARCH? RAAAHHHH!!!!!!

Hmm, poor Dreamworks, having to pilfer Pixar for its best (?) ideas. "Let's take Monsters Inc. and lazily mix it with The Incredibles, then we'll slap our trademark, cheap 'butt-joke' humour and ugly character designs across the whole thing... and pass it off as original. WIN!" My money is remaining firmly in my pocket on this one.

YES! I've been waiting for an update on this. Im 100% dedicated to Pixar in being the leader in quality CGI, story and well-rounded movie making.. . . .but every now and then Dreamworks can surprise you. Often, they let you down. Hard. But I am crossing my fingers and looking forward to this a lot.

Yeah the humans are... I don't know... UGLY? With the exception of the giant lady. Already know the blob guy is gonna steal the show.

Looks quite cool.. Ha, Seth Rogan's voice sure is easy to pick! The blob guy sounds like the dinosaur from Toy Story voice..

No way dude! Bob's voice is much deeper than Rex's (Wallace Shawn: Vizzini - The Princess Bride ["Inconceivable!"] Bob/Mr. Incredible's boss, Gilbert Huph "They're penetrating the bureaucracy!")!

love the premise for this film, but sadly i'm not really a fan of the look of the film at all. could have been great, looks like it will just be ok

Looks decent enough to see. And to those who complain about Dreamworks, IMO both Pixar and Dreamworks are pretty good, I've liked films of both a whole lot, apparent idea stealing be damned.

There IS no "idea stealing". This movie has nothing in common with Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles, or any other Pixar movie. If you are going to say that Monsters vs Aliens is stealing from Monsters, Inc., then you might as well say that Star wars stole from 2001: A Space Odyssey, or Star Trek, or Forbidden Planet. And for that matter, that means that Monsters, Inc.: A movie about Monsters and children, stole from Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. Monsters vs. Aliens is clearly a send-up of all of those 1950 - 1960 monster and alien movies and has zilch in common with Monsters, Inc. btw, I saw the trailer in the theaters before Madagascar 2 (Sigh. I don't wanna talk about it) and now I'm REALLY hopping to see Monsters vs. Aliens! Dreamworks - PLEASE! - don't let me down this time!

From the tons of comments on your articles, I guess I am not the only one having all the enjoyment here! Keep up the excellent work.
