Rumor: Christopher Nolan Signed and Starting in Febraury on Batman 3?

The Dark Knight

This news today is more filler than anything - it's not fully confirmed and it will all eventually be true anyway. However, for the sake of discussion, we're throwing it out there. Apparently the latest issue of the industry magazine Production Weekly (via our friends at Film School Rejects) lists the third Batman movie (currently untitled) as being in "Active Development" with pre-production beginning in February of 2009. The guys over at IESB talked to a Warner Brothers exec recently who denied that production was going to start in February, but that doesn't necessarily mean things could be moving behind-the-scenes for a start on pre-production at that time. It's inevitable that it'll happen, it's just a matter of when.

Additionally, the update in the magazine lists Christopher Nolan (pictured above) as being involved, which may (or may not) confirm that he has signed on again. But was there any ever doubt that he wouldn't? We all know that there was some sort of "scare" with Jon Favreau and Iron Man 2, but considering The Dark Knight has made $985 million worldwide, they're not going to let him go, even if they've got to greenlight some of his other projects. As I said, it's just a matter of time until it all happens. I guess it's just mildly exciting to hear that the third installment may be starting development so soon. I know I'm anxious to find out every last morsel of info I can about it, from the villains to the cast.

We'll of course bring you the latest news on the third Batman movie as soon as there is any more. For now, I don't expect to hear much of anything until early next year when The Dark Knight will be re-released in theaters. And with a strong potential of Oscar buzz and a re-release that might push it over $1 billion in worldwide box office, that sounds like the perfect time to announce early details on the third movie. Hopefully we won't have to wait too much longer for official confirmation.

Interested in every last bit of info myself too Alex! It is only a matter of time to a sequel of a masterpiece!

The first thing the producers should ask Nolan is: How much time do you need? I cant imagine how complex and difficult the process of writting a sequel to The Dark Knight is going to be.

Dreckent on Oct 5, 2008

it sucks knowing that iron man is going to get its ass kicked by batman again.

darrin on Oct 5, 2008

It will happen sooner or later.

I personally have not taken for granted the fact that Nolan may be coming back. He has a lot of projects he is interested in developing, and him returning to direct a third Batman movie was never guaranteed. Any info, whether substantiated or not, that he is returning is fantastic news. I would be extremely disappointed if the reigns to this franchise were handed to anyone else besides Christopher Nolan. I hope they give him as much time as he needs, and as much money as he needs to do anything that he wants. The man deserves it.

But even if they re-released it in jan, that would mess it up. Comparing it to Titanic. They didnt re-release it. You get my drift?

REAL6 on Oct 5, 2008

^ I was thinking the same thing. I dont think it would matter because of the whole inflation thing anyway. But who wouldnt want to see it again in theaters? I cant wait for them to re release it!

big r on Oct 5, 2008

#6... titanic wont make any re-release becoz it ran in theaters for more than 10 MONTHS worldwide... but TDK is just 3 months until to date...and thats 7 months short of titanic screening record... so with TDK re-release in still consider "fair" enough for the move made by WB... by the way, WB only plan to re-release TDK on IMAX...if they really want to chase for the money and box office record, why not re-release it on conventional theater too? so, its just the matter of oscar...thats all.... Now you get my drift?

safichan on Oct 5, 2008

Christopher Nolan for President.

vegeta on Oct 5, 2008

Bring back Nolan...and we'll have a full throttle of the Caped Crusader's next installment!!! by the way you think WB should afraid of iron-man 2?? i dont think so...coz iron-man 2 and marvel should be very afraid of Watchmen... here's why? the very 1st iron-man film couldn't beat the 2nd iron-man film must now compete with Watchmen... why Watchmen?? coz after TDK has set a very high new standard/benchmark on how comic book movie should be watchmen will push the standard even higher by the next year... so the marvel and iron-man should be in freaking fear right now with DC and WB....

safichan on Oct 5, 2008

I say: re-release the TDK in January with a sound bites for the next one- much like the very first trailer for TDK, that will for sure take it over a billion and possibly take the reign over Titanic as the biggest grosser of all time. "you like taht little bunny!!! HUHUHUHUHUHU!! You like that!!!

Vic on Oct 5, 2008

Very interesting. Considering that it's only a rumour for now I think it's a bit of wishful thinking. There is no doubt in my mind that Nolan will return to conclude the Batman trilogy but I celieve that he's going to work on another project in between, there are several films he's looking to make. Also considering that The Dark Knight is currently gunning for oscars I dont think they'll even begin any production until they're over. Either way I hope the next one is out by 2011!!!

SlashBeast on Oct 5, 2008

Who says Nolan will be on again? If I were him I would run. Yes Dark Knight rocked our socks off - and you can't just do that every time. There was something special there - and is going to be extremely hard to do again or outdo, practically impossible. If I were him, I don't know if I'd even try - at least for a while.

Tim on Oct 5, 2008

there is a difference between Favreau/Iron Man scare and Nolan/Batman scare. Favreau always said he would do a sequel even know for a while he wasnt signed on. Nolan never said he would do a third batman. He himself may be afraid that the second cant be topped. Anyway i am concerned with a re-release of titanic in 2012 for the 100th anniversary.

What if this is a bad plan? What if it turns out horrible? What if Iron Man dominates Batman?

Daniel on Oct 5, 2008

Why can't the second one be prevailed over? If Nolan takes his sweet time, he could most certainly produce a movie that trumps TDK. I seriously believe he could have this feat performed (granted he works with the same people, they could muster up a project that is for the ages, they already set up the foundation for a phenomenally great third addition to the trilogy). Another thing that perturbs me is, even though i've been a die-hard Batman fan since my inception to the character... TDK is a great movie but it can EASILY be topped off by a sequel. The movie gets a whole lot of appraisal and accolades but the pedestal speach isn't necessary (i believe its quality, whether cinematically, fx, storyline, etc. is comparable to it's predecessor). What have many doubting a stellar sequel is the history behind 3rd installments of great franchises - they generally suck (first round of batman movies, terminator, spiderman, back to the future, etc.) But with patience and faith, i seriously know Nolan and co. can pull off a theatrical experience for the ages that will not only exceed his previous works, but shatter all doubts and records. How will this task be consummated? I don't know. They absolutely surpassed all of my expectations with TDK (as i wasn't anticipating anything great, even with the plethora of trailers = i didn't fall into the hype with the viral mrktng they did as well). I'm being sincere with this... people make it seem as if TDK can't be topped. Are you serious?!?!?! .

I believe the third installment could definitely top The Dark Knight. It will be the first movie from Nolan that has the settings people think of when they think Batman. It will have the true Batcave. It will have *Commissioner* Gordon from the very start. Batman won't have to worry over a love interest anymore (the only possible love interest would be Catwoman, and even then it should be a love/hate thing where they never actually get together in any capacity). Batman will be hunted by the city while he's busy saving it. If we have The Riddler, which is pretty much fully expected, then Batman will be doing full-blown detective work as he tries to solve riddles and clues. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have been building up to this third movie. This third movie will BE Batman.

Viper on Oct 5, 2008

Its not that Nolan couldn't do it - he can, its that the greedy company will rush it, and in turn it will end up not being the movie Nolan would have made.

Tim on Oct 5, 2008

if warner brothers knows whats good for them they won't rush Nolan. they definitely don't want to lose him. they'd be stupid to piss him off

Chris on Oct 5, 2008

Just because there's never been a great 3rd entry in comic book films doesn't mean there never will be. Why not take that fact and work harder to break the ttrend of bad threequels by making an amazing movie. The Dark Knight won't be easy to top, but it CAN be done. Besides, even if it's not as good as The Dark Knight that doesn't mean it will be a bad film, it can still be a great movie.

SlashBeast on Oct 5, 2008

^ I very much doubt that WB will in any way rush Nolan. They gave him pretty much sovereignty while making TDK and that's why it turned out like it did. I think they realized in this case it was better to just leave him do whatever he wanted, and I guess after they saw the results they won't try to mess with the formula.

Alfredo on Oct 5, 2008

I believe in Christopher Nolan.

D-9 on Oct 5, 2008

The third one is going to happen with everyone coming back (minus Heath Ledger for obvious reasons) because this movie made nearly A BILLION FUCKING DOLLARS. IF ONE MOVIE IN A FRANCHISE CAN MAKE ONE BILLION FUCKING DOLLARS THEN I RECKON THERE WILL BE A SEQUEL. With that said, don't anybody doubt this sequel. It's happening.

I heard through the grapevine that the next Batman movie by Nolan is tentatively being named: "The Caped Crusader"

Conrad on Oct 6, 2008

I just made a fan poster of Johnny Depp as The Riddler in a The Dark Knight Sequel (Batman 3, Dark Knight Returns, Gotham City, The Caped Crusader) [send any feedback]
