Rumor: Paul Thomas Anderson Directing Metal Gear Solid Movie?! Updated!
No way did I just write that headline. A feature film adaptation of Konami's Metal Gear Solid has "been in the works" for a while. We first mentioned it back in February of 2007 when Sony announced that they would be producing it, and we mentioned it again in March of this year when producer Michael De Luca confirmed that they're trying to get it back on track with a script written by Equilibrium's Kurt Wimmer. Now Kotaku reports that Konami's Aki Saito said that Paul Thomas Anderson, of There Will Be Blood and Magnolia, is one of the potential directors. He didn't name anyone else either, just PTA, and SlashFilm confirmed separately that he didn't mistake him for Paul W.S. Anderson. This is real folks!
Kotaku spoke with Saito at a press conference for Metal Gear Solid 4, due out this summer, and received an update on the production. Saito is the guy who is handling the film negotiations for Konami, which would make him the right guy to know exactly what's going on. Apparently Saito actually fully said "Paul Thomas Anderson" and not just "Paul Anderson," which is enough confirmation for us to believe that PTA is legitimately being pursued as the director of the film. Saito also spoke briefly about the current state of the project and their concern for preventing this from becoming another video game flop.
"Hollywood has great respect for Mr. Kojima. They want to meet with him. Kojima will be acting as a producer, but we don't know how involved he'll be as a producer. Often Hollywood adaptations have the original game creator involved at the beginning, but somewhere along the line they fall out of view. This is why it's very important for us to carefully pick the studio for this project."
It appears that Hideo Kojima, the game's original creator and designer, won't be directing but instead will be producing. Everyone knows that Kojima's involvement is integral with this adaptation and it sounds like Konami actually understands the film's potential. They're really turning this into a truly high profile project, and now with the mention of Paul Thomas Anderson, they've solidified my speculation that it is definitely going to be something extraordinary. While nothing is confirmed, and Sony especially isn't talking, it sounds realistically like PTA is actually one of the directors they're pursuing.
Wow. I don't know what to say to this. It's like a dream come true. After watching There Will Be Blood multiple times, I've come to realize that anything Paul Thomas Anderson touches will instantly become solid gold. If he actually takes on this gig, I believe we'll see one of the greatest video adaptations of all-time. Everyone who is already a fan of the Metal Gear Solid video game series knows how cinematic and incredible that game naturally is, but in the hands of PTA, it could only grow even further. Even if you weren't the biggest fan of There Will Be Blood, I don't think anyone can deny that PTA is a brilliant filmmaker. It's just a question of how he exactly would tackle the futuristic world of Metal Gear Solid.
Update! Apparently Collider called up one of their friends involved in the production and asked them how true this rumor was. The answer: "completely false and ridiculous." We're still going to hold out and hope to god Saito and Kotaku were right, but for now it seems all hope is lost. At least it was an awesome rumor while it lasted!
Is this not some of the best movie news you've heard all month?!
this is going to be a crazy movie. first

Look, God. There are rules. Rules that you set a thousand years ago dictating that video game nerds CAN'T HAVE GREAT FILMS. They can be good, but never great. Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider are the best we're going to get, and it should be kept that way. If a great film based on a game happens, the planet will stop rotating, and we'll all go flying off into space. So please, follow your own rules. You did good on canceling Halo just after the props were made. While on that subject, Verbinski needs to get a heart attack just before the Bioshock movie starts filming. Thanks!

This shit is going to be EPIC!! Solid's gonna drink all your milkshakes!! I just came back from seeing Speed Racer and thought it was a genius adaptation of the cartoon. I was thinking how awesome it is when adaptations are done just right and thought of plenty of movies I'd want to get made. I didn't think of this one, but holy shit it blows my mind. If this shit ends up being true I'd fuckin' flip. There Will Be Blood is such a good movie. Better than No country for old Men, in my opinion. PTA is one of those directors that can do no wrong. You know it'll be good. I wonder if he'll co-write it or if he has already played the games. The only thing that would equal this in terms of epicness would be Alfonso Cuaron directing an adaptation of Half-Life. I love movies!!
Daniel Silva on May 13, 2008
i would have give the film to ridley scott. Let him him make it into the next blade runner.

Thank God Uwe Boll isn't directing this. Hopefully this movie will break the mold that movie adaptations of video games are subpar.
shadowsoze on May 13, 2008
Metal Gear Solid is an epic, a great video game, although its story got quite weird somewhere during the course of MGS2. PTA is an incredible filmmaker, so this combination would be mind-blowing indeed, hopefully it all works out.
Keith on May 13, 2008
No way that PTA will do this.

as long as it isn't Paul W.S. Anderson, he massacred Resident Evil and Alien Vs. Predator, Resident Evil is not a super "tough girl" game, he took away everything that made Resident Evil what it is to make it a glorified vanity film for his girlfriend Milla Jovovich. Alien Vs. Predator was weak and poorly written, requiem was better but then Anderson has nothing to do with that.
The Delightful Deviant on May 13, 2008
DAMN I THOUGHT IT WAS PAUL W.S....cause that would be a tragedy

Hmmm, maybe this might work, but I gotta say I flat out don't like PTA's stuff. I was greatly disappointed with There Will Be Blood AND Magnolia. In addition, considering his style, I don't know how he could pull off a movie based on a game like MGS. But I guess we'll see. I agree with Darrin, have Sir Ridley direct this, and it will indeed become epic, not a head-scratching-inducing extra-long movie about nothing in particular that is so full of itself that it forgets to take the story anywhere.
Alfredo on May 14, 2008
# 7 I totally agree with you the story started to get freaky with MGS2 and you can bet your ass it's getting freakier in MGS4! There has been speculation sometime now, that Viggo Mortensen should play Salid Snake, but I think the voice of David Hayter is key for the character... so I think David Hayter looks a little bit like Snake
bltzie on May 14, 2008
Imagine if Daniel Day Lewis plays Solid Snake!!!!!!!!!! Holy smokes!
Richard on May 14, 2008
Are you guys joking? There is absolutely no way that Paul Thomas Anderson will direct a Metal Gear Solid movie, no matter how good a source this rumour has come from. How can you even take this seriously? This is about as likely as him directing Superbad 2.
Jon on May 14, 2008
I always thought Sean Bean looks a little like Snake.
Nathan on May 14, 2008
Who does Paul Thomas Anderson still get jobs after the films he's done?
Dr Phaust on May 14, 2008
There was a rumour a while back that Christian Bale was being considered as Solid Snake, is he still in the running, do you know? I mean, he has the rugged 'Look' for the part, and if the successes of the Batman films are anything to go by, I think he'd be incredible for the role! I'd really like to see him in another hand-to-hand shooty style of film again (though Equilibrium wasn't a GREAT film in my oppinion). I can quite easily imagine Christian Bale with the iconic Snake headband, holding a pistol and knife. What do you think? 🙂
Adam on May 14, 2008
Not happening. A director like Paul Thomas wouldn't touch a property full of cheese like MGS.
Discateia on May 14, 2008
Paul Thomas Anderson is a WRITER/director/producer! He's even said in interviews that writing for him is one of the most fun aspects to movie making, which practically confirms for me that this won't happen. I personally want to see PTA try horror next like other rumors have suggested, but the man does have the Midas touch for any movie. We'll have to wait and see.
Matt Stryker on May 14, 2008
Worst news I've heard all month. Paul Thomas Anderson is the worst directing choice for this film. It's so outside his comfort level. He's never directed action or Science Fiction and now he's going to direct one that has a huge world wide fan base. Terrible!
Kent on May 14, 2008
This site says it ain't happening: http://www.collider.com/entertainment/news/article.asp/aid/7890/tcid/1

Christian Bale or Kurt Russell!!!!!

Alfredo, Magnolia is one truly one of the best films and in my opinion should be on everyone's must watch list even more so than There Will Be Blood.

METAL GEAR MOVIE. So its Paul Thomas Anderson is going to do the movie based on Metal Gear Solid series, well we don't know about that yet so lets keep that in mind in case there is more news. So if all MGS fans would like to talk about the movie if they want other types of directors helming the movie like Paul Thomas Anderson, thats fine. I'm not really a MGS fan i just read things that are intresting in news that I hear. I just relize that there another Paul Anderson out there which its Paul Anderson still working on the Castlevania movie which its still on hold. Thank You. BRUCE ACOSTA AUSTRALIA.

Lots of random thoughts.....(Hollywood pay attention) Holloway - cheesy Mortensen NO Bale NO Jackman - to similar to wolverine/vanhelsing Butler too Scottish Bean too Yorkshire-ish Crowe simply not right for this! Why would Kurt Russle play a version of a character he’s already done??? David Hayter!? - would you ask George Lucas to play Obi Wan... Plus his script was turned down Eric Banner yes, but he would never do it, he’s done this type before(Shame) People who will KILL this film - Ratner Sommers Twoy Harlin (Rob) Coen Emmerich De-bont P WS A and yes, KURT WIMMER People who should but will NEVER for one thing or another - Perfect choices are Cameron &/or Bay (the games biggest influences)- both too busy and have similar projects Speilberg Wachowski’s Scott Nolan McTiernan (jail) Liman Proyas Jackson Singer Snyder Shyamalan Wiseman (yes really) Norrington F Lawrence People who should be involved in some way Bruckheimer Silver Michael Mann (Think ex military/cop characters in his films, his style and realism) Pre Transformers, Bay/Spielberg would have been possible/perfect staring Eric Banner Music by Harry Greggson-Williams ILM Unfortunately I’ve thought about this film A LOT, I hope it never gets made! Paul Thomas Anderson, that's a good one. Terrance Malik for Resident Evil 32.6:Dead Franchise Walking....

It would kick a$$ if they made it based off Metal Gear Solid on playstation one, one of the best storys in the MGS saga (in my opinion). It would also be cool if they made it from MGS 3 Snake Eater the start of it all, but they might just make a new story for it. I Can't Wait to see the new Metal Gear I wonder if they will make a new one or just use one from the games, I will be very pissed if they dont use David Hayter to play snake because with out that voice what do you have.
fox on Nov 20, 2008
To 31, Kojima is hoping to have it based on the first game (Shadow Moses) so I hope they go through with it so we know what we should get, instead of when they butchered SMBs.
