Saw V and Saw VI Updates - Plot, Director, and More!

Saw IV

I lost all interest in the Saw series after Saw IV last year. I really enjoyed Saw III, quite a bit, but Saw IV didn't have the same great feeling as the previous three. Of course we already know that the Saw franchise has films scheduled through Saw VI in 2009, and probably more as long as they keep making money. Remarkably, I don't think there has been any major updates on any of the films since IV hit theaters last year, so now is our chance to bring everyone back up to speed. Lionsgate has released some new information on both Saw V and Saw VI, including characters, a director, a plot synopsis, and much more. If you're still a fan of the Saw series, then you'll definitely want to hear about all the latest.

In Saw V, due in theaters on October 24th this year, Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is seemingly the last person alive to carry on the Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) legacy. But when his secret is threatened, Hoffman must go on the hunt to eliminate all loose ends. The full cast also includes Scott Patterson, Betsy Russell, Mark Rolston, Carlo Rota, Julie Benz, Greg Bryk, Laura Gordon and Meagan Good. Producer designer David Hackl is directing with a script by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (of Feast and Saw IV).

Series producer Mark Burg spoke with Bloody Disgusting recently at a meet-n-greet for Saw V, and told them some juicy details about what to expect with the fifth installment. What he promises below sounds like it definitely won't let fans down.

"[We have] six different traps, more gore" he tells Bloody-Disgusting. "People escape one trap, just to get caught in another; it's closer in feel to the original SAW as thematically it's about teamwork. I am far and away convinced that these are the best traps we have ever had."

"This film is far less confusing and more linear, and there are TWO great twists," he explains. "Just when you thought you figured it out, we twist again. We bring in some new characters that you really get to know… we bring in some peripheral characters that play out in SAW VI - the people that you think will live… not a chance!"

These quotes just reminded me how entertaining this entire series really is and encouraged me to check out the first three again for the hell of it. Although we've updated you with the latest on Saw V, we've got some new information on Saw VI already.

Bloody Disgusting also broke the news yesterday that David Hackl won't be directing Saw VI, instead Kevin Greutert will take the reigns. Greutert will be making his directional debut with Saw VI, but he's no newcomer to the series. Greutert has edited all four of the films so far and is editing Saw V as we speak. If anyone, Greutert definitely sounds like he's familiar with the intricacies of the series at this moment and she be able to handle the sixth by himself.

How many of you are looking forward to seeing the newest Saw film?

"People escape one trap, just to get caught in another; it's closer in feel to the original SAW as thematically it's about teamwork." that sounds more like Saw II than it does the original Saw.

The Delightful Deviant on May 15, 2008

I will watch it, i am looking forward to catching the trailer at comic-con 😀

Stuart Mellor on May 15, 2008

The series started good but the its really dragging on, i wont be seeing this one.

onyxx on May 15, 2008

The Saw series sucked from the very start. They're all definable by shoddy acting and typical torture porn bullcrap.

Brad on May 15, 2008

I really liked the first two, but like everything, it gets old and predictable. Seriously, who didn't figure out Saw IV in the first 10 minutes? What comes after Saw VI? Jigsaw vs. Jason, or Jigsaw vs. Freddy: In Space?

Tim on May 15, 2008

To hell with torture porno!!!!! Keep the website quality, not with this sh**.

Big Zero on May 15, 2008

What a bunch of crappy movies

Matt on May 15, 2008

I only liked the first one, the rest are (like matt states) a bunch of crappy movies! I won't be seeing this one

bltzie on May 15, 2008

"Keep the website quality, not with this sh**." Which of course means "only talk about the type of movies I like!" No one put a gun to your head and forced you to click the link. The Saw franchise has been a huge money maker, so obviously lots of people like it. If you aren't one of those people, don't read articles about the movies. Pretty simple.

Joel on May 15, 2008

It's sort of disappointing that from that quote it seems the whole thing has simply become a set of check-boxes to tick for them.

Chris on May 15, 2008

"Keep the website quality, not with this sh**." Which of course means "only talk about the type of movies I like!" what he means is, keep the site about quality real movies, not torture porn and shock value movies. At least, thats what I picked up from his statement. Lets be honest here Joel, the series is a joke, and has the same cinematic quality as "Meet the Spartans"

Billy on May 15, 2008

There is no God. If there was a God, he would have struck down the people that continue to make these horrible films. It doesn't matter WHAT plot or actors they use, the Saw films will suck. What makes things worse is the fact that, After Jigsaw died, they STILL continued to make these films. He was the only decent thing in the series. Let it die...

Silence on May 15, 2008

I liked the first one...

DCompose on May 15, 2008

I know a LOT of people who love the Saw series. I'm not one of them, but I've enjoyed the series for what it was. I'd even go as far as to say I liked the first two, and thought the third was OK. The fourth one threw me for a loop though, but that was mainly because I watched it on DVD at home and kept getting interrupted every 15 minutes by the call of daily life. So I had no idea what was going on in that one. It didn't look good enough to watch twice though. heh. I will say the series is loads better than the horror/slasher films I grew up with in the 80's and 90's though. I'll see these two as well, probably at home on DVD though. Keep on reporting!

kevjohn on May 15, 2008

i can do without a saw that takes place in the past. i hope they can move forward (i guess that's the only way they can go, anyway) and get on with the story. saw iv should have been 3.5 as there wasn't much distance between the events of 3-4. i could do w/ out so many flashbacks too, but i'm sure we will need them since we are now in the post-jigsaw phase of the series.

J: on May 15, 2008

I like the series and will be checking these two out. Granted they aren't that great but when me a my group of friends go for the past 4, it is more of a Halloween tradition.

Ryan on May 15, 2008

uh torture "porn"? were we watching the same films? torture...of course but porn? dont recall...

maxx on May 15, 2008

I think it's a nice modern horror series. Its like old school Jason's and Freddy. And there actually IS a public for that sort of movies, it's entertainment. The first one was great. Very dark and it made me feel totally helpless. the rest was indeed, in my humble opinion, not worth the watch. I actually think they would get a better feedback if they just went for the TV format, made like a regular TV Serie out of it. Because cinematically speaking the last one (IV) was only suited for TV. What do you guys think?

Huckpaletos on May 16, 2008

Billy, who decides what quality is? Movies are about entertainment, and I would argue that if people are shelling out their money to see sequel after sequel, they must be finding them entertaining, indicating some type of quality (even if it's the same "quality" of familiarity associated with a Big Mac). I've never seen where anything to indicate that is dedicated to bringing us the best and most worthy films. It seems to me that the site is about the latest and most interesting movie news and rumor, and the continued success of the Saw franchise is undoubtedly newsworthy. (To be fair, I thought the first one was interesting and but haven't been able to sit through more than 10-15 minutes of any of the sequels). Maxx- the term "torture porn" refers to bloody over the topic scenes of graphic violence included in a film for no other reason than to titillate the audience. It isn't meant to suggest that the content is designed to be erotic.

Joel on May 16, 2008

oh I see that makes more sense...still kind of a weird mixture of words...but oh well welcome to hollywood

Maxx on May 16, 2008

Snore...The first Saw worked because it was two guys trying to figure out what the hell happened & how to tie it all together. The second one was ok...but you could tell they were starting to go for more gross-out than character. By the third it was obvious that it's about gruesome traps & shock value than any consistent storyline...the fourth had no plot whatsoever, especially when the tubby dude from the end of #3 comes bumbling in around the last quarter of the film. Kinda like "Oh yeah we forgot about this guy...We should do something with him..." The Saw has gotten dull. It just won't cut it anymore.

jason_md2020 on May 16, 2008

Hey if they can make a sequel to Crank where the guy falls from a plane and lives then I say why not. Make 20 Saws! Now will I spend my hard earned bucks to see them is a different story.

Dee on May 20, 2008

I personally am looking forward to seeing how the story continues...I find it all very interesting

Kay on May 27, 2008

Are you guys serious??? You cannot look at the Saws' as one movie at a time!! You have to understand them as a whole. Yes, you have the blood and gore in the first 3, but the 4th one grips the reality of all of the movies combined. This is what makes this series incredible. If they only did one or even two movies with the whole story, it would not be nearly as good as spreading the movies out in "real time." So before you assume that this is going to be just another Saw, rewatch the movies ESPECIALLY Saw 4 to learn and love the story, not just the blood and gore.

C & T on May 29, 2008

This is by far the best series ever made. I hope they keep making SAW movies for the rest of my life. Keep it up, cause i will check them out on opening day, every single time. THANKS!

NoWA on Jun 1, 2008

Another terrible article. Thank God Im not paying for this! I will be seeing every movie they make. I've already got the money waiting!

Larry on Jun 12, 2008

What I want to know, is what happened to the doctor, Gordon, in the first movie? We all see Adam's body in the subsequent movie, but the doctor actually cut off his foot. Mind you, it wasn't in time, but we NEVER see his body. We see everyone else's body, but not his. This is driving me crazy, considering they kept Walburg's character alive. Of course, he could just be dead. I could just be going insane, but I've brought this up to two other people that have seen all the movies and they are also intregued. Any thoughts?

Jenn on Aug 9, 2008

the people that think saw "sucks" are dead inside (or alive and ime just dead inside). the saw series lost momentem after saw4 but will rock 5&6 rock on saw 1-

saw? ya SAW :) on Sep 24, 2008

HUH? I think that SAW IV was the best in the whole series. It has more depth and it reveals more of JigJaw's past. I really really like how the different plots of the previous movies (II and III) converged at the very end wanting you scream for more. Just to give you an idea how good I thought IV was: After work I pick up my wife at her work, but I stayed and watch Saw IV until the very end and I screamed "F*CKING GOOD!". I didn't care about the aftermath with my wife, it was worth it.

toontje on Sep 27, 2008

Saw:very good saw 2:excellent saw 3:fucking superb saw 4:genius all 4 have been spot on,i think theres a lot more to this story yet and cant wait.all those who slag the films off are really 2 shit scared to watch properly and in depth.these films remind me of the scarpetha novels.4 u thick cunts novel means ...story books not colouring books

simon on Oct 11, 2008

If you're not interested in the Saw movies then go someplace else. This should be where people who like them discuss them, not a who's side is better page.

Jessica on Oct 15, 2008

So how many Saw movies have been made so far? I've seen all of them but i can't remember!

Jamie on Oct 22, 2008

u guys are so dumb theyre veryy good and deff not predictable and they keep u on the edge of ur seat, theyre great movies, i will admit sometimes bad acting, but the stories are all veryy good

damian on Oct 23, 2008

Honestly, you have to appreciate the intricate plot of each movie. They are all so different in their traps and tricks. When you think you know what the hell is going on. BAM! They throw you somethign different. You are always wonderign what is gonna happen next and how coudl they have done that! And when you say that they drag on! They most definitely dont! Its amazing how they are able to tie every movie back to one another! Its not just another stupid series liek Friday the 13th where the only plot is to scare people and kill them! No, thsi is teaching people lessons and giving them the choice to save their own lives, usually its just as easy as following the rules. You have to appreciate how everything is interconnected and how well layed out everything is! The ones of you who dont understand how great they movies are, dont deserve to watch the. they are something you have to actually think about to appreciate! Open your minds!

Teresa on Oct 24, 2008

I just saw SAW V and let me tell you it is the best one yet! Seriously, I was beginning to loose interest in them but when I watched this last one I cant wait until the next one comes out. This one isnt as gross and has a great plot but you should watch all the other ones before you watch this one to keep up on the story.

Paula on Oct 26, 2008

So, SAW V was not very good. The traps were awesome, but the storyline was so-so. And by the way, SAW is not torture. HOSTEL was torture porn.

Greg on Oct 30, 2008

EDIT: SAW was not torture PORN. Sorry that I misspoke.

Greg on Oct 30, 2008

Can't wait for the VI movie!!!!!!

JiGsAw on Nov 2, 2008

first of all to put a puzzle together u need all the pieces so why quit watching the series half way through , some people are just too fickle i am a fan and i love the movies.and some people just hate the challenge of trying to figure out whats going on if you think saw is pointless , try watching hostle and hostle 2 those were horrible movies . o well everybody is entitled to there own opinion

cliff on Nov 2, 2008

i dont understand how you people can sit here and bash what has become THE premiere "horror/gore" franchise of the last ten years. please, name me any movie in the past decade to 15 years that hasn't been anything but pure garbage or regurgitated, crappy remakes of classic horror films from the Hitchcock era. you can't do it because there have been none. admittedly, at first i was against the saw series, but the more i watched the more i loved. and i defy you to tell me that this series has not set the precedent for the direction of "horror" films for the next ten years. because of saw, we have tons of imitation crap -- i.e. hostel, turistas, 13: game of death, and a plethora of others -- that is just trying to capitalize on the cheaply budgeted filmmaking juggernaut that saw has become. so don't compare saw to any of those shoddy films, and if you hate them so much why do you talk about them so feverishly? i can tell you that too -- because, no matter what you think of it, the only goal, from a filmmakers' p.o.v., is to get you talking about the film....mission accomplished.

brian on Nov 3, 2008

For those of you that have seen V, I have to know... what is in the box that is given to his X-wife?

Jennifer on Nov 7, 2008

I have no clue what is in the box. Jigsaw said that Jill knows what to do with it. I assume it is the evidence to bring down Huffman. After all, Jigsaw said "In the event of my disapearence, the evidence needed to put you in jail is in the right places." At first I just thought it was a pig mask so she could continue his work, but after much debate, incriminating evidence againt Huffman was the final consensus.

Greg on Nov 7, 2008

I'm really surprised people didn't like saw 4, that was my favourite! Also the most complex maybe if you didn't like it u didn't understand it properly. By the way someone said someone said saw 3 and saw 4 were too close together.......they were Simultaneous that was the whole point! I love the whole series but if i am honest i think 2 was nowhere near as good as the others.

Anna on Nov 26, 2008

You guys are ALL stupid. If anybody REALLY cared about your opinions, you wouldn't be postingin this second-rate message board.

Judge on Dec 7, 2008

Lets cut the crap guys. IF you dont like them dont watch them! NOT hard at all. If you think that they need your ass to make money then think again! becuase last time i checked saw 4 was the number 1 movie in the boxoffice. and yea i am a saw fan and will allways be a saw fan. If you really think that they movies suck then what the hell would you say about all of the other HORROR movies out there right now? to me this is the best movie i had ever seen. and if you dont like them then get a life and dont serch them online and take your time to write about them.

laith on Dec 10, 2008

should have left it alone after part 3 would have been a great ending not liking the new ones going on two long, hollywood just dont now when to let a good thing go. the way its going i will be leaving a comment about part 10?

tucker on Jan 9, 2009

Obviously you don't know much about porn. There was hardly any sex in any of the series. So, how would you call it "Torture and Porn"? I call it a "Torture ONLY" series. Someone that just don't like torture just makes sh*t up to try to get their point made, but make the mistake of saying something that makes no sense at all and does not give a sh*t what others think or like. I liked them all and I watch these movies for just the interest of them. I like them but not make them my life story. It is just a break from reality of life.

me on Jan 15, 2009

true. Saw is not "torture AND porn." but, it falls under the genre of "torture porn." torture porn is a subgenre of slasher films that is characterized by torture, mutlilation, extreme sadism, and usually nudity. how does Saw NOT fall under that umbrella? its not a criticism, either. i love the torture porn genre. and yes, i am praying for HOSTEL: Part 3.

J. Kerr on Jan 17, 2009

I have seen saws i-v and yes i eagerly await saw vi. for a long time i got very bored with how predictable and relatively tame the horror genre had become. (mind you i still remained a stephen king fan) anyways, that is until i watched a movie a friend and i rented one day...that movie was the first saw. after that i could enjoy horror movies again.

James on Feb 2, 2009

they need to stop with this saw shit, its done and over with, after the 1st it wasnt as good as the first so yea, they need to end it lol

Tana on Jun 2, 2009
