It's True - Lethal Weapon 5 on the Fast Track at Warner Brothers
In early August, we wrote about a rumor that a Lethal Weapon 5 was being written by none other than Shane Black (of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). At the time, Kevin called it bullshit, but now it seems to be confirmed. IGN talked with actor Columbus Short earlier today who confirmed the rumors that he is up for a role in the sequel and that the film is on the fast track at Warner Brothers. Apparently Short might play Murtaugh's son and hints that indeed both Mel Gibson and Danny Glover will be back. When I wrote about Hollywood reboots yesterday, I didn't intend for franchises like this to be dug up from the dead.
The early rumors revealed that the plot would be about a homicidal Riggs who is about to retire, then pulls Murtaugh out of retirement to solve one final case, before they both officially head off into the sun. I wasn't a fan of the Lethal Weapon series to begin with at all, so I don't have much to say about this sequel anyway. It just goes to show that Hollywood is on its way to remaking and rebooting every last franchise they can get their grubby hands on. I guess Lethal Weapon 5 is just one of the next ones in the pipe. However, Shane Black's involvement is bit interesting. Although I have no clue why they want to fast track this?
Buddy cop movie where one cop pulls another out from retirement to solve "One Last Case" just to relive their glory days, and all while blowing shit up and saying snappy one-liners... how many times have we seen that already?... :l

Dude...you realize Danny Glovers character has been trying to retire since movie one...if they want a halfway decent story at least make them both civilians!

That story Pesci told at the end of no.4 was the one of the most cringeworthy things I've ever heard - about his pet frog being his only friend

This isn't milking a dead cow,,, this is alien animal mutaltion. If this wasn't a comedy, I'd say what a joke...

They fast tracked this flick because they want to fast track their revenue stream.

When your franchise's biggest catchphrase is "I'm gettin' too old for this shit." and it was first uttered *20 years ago*, dragging these characters out again is beyond ironic.

Lethal Weapon is one of my all time favorites. They should have left it alone though.

you never know gibson and glover are both great actors and may have one last good leathal weapon up there sleves. but it had better be one hell of a good story and not the same old bullshit. but hollywood could slow down on the reboots before there is nothing left to reboot and all we will get is some really shitty movies by really shitty directors.

Seriously Alex, you've never been a fan of the Lethal Weapon series?!! Why not, they were so good at being buddy cop movies, you had to hand it to their caliber of action/comedy - this is great series. Although I can't say I am looking forward to seeing a fifth one, I mean the last one pretty much tied it all up well, even the closing credits of LW 4 was nostaligic enough to feel comfortable with the end of it.... But we'll see it comes out, after all, Shane Black IS returning as writer...hmm

The first two Weapon movies were great, instant classics. The third was just okay. And the fourth was just awful.

Well, if Hollywood is going to do sequels, this is the type of stuff they should do. The Lethal Weapon franchise is tailor-made for sequels. I honestly don't recall much about most of the series, except for 1 and 4, both of which I recall being pretty entertaining. Look, this isn't high-art here. These are copy buddy action flicks, you can't judge these next to the proposed sequels to films like Blade Runner. Totally different category.

If you were a fan of the series, #19 (well, at least the first two), you would understand why this is Bad Idea.
