Star Wars: The Clone Wars

You might have thought that no Star Wars movie would ever show in theaters again, at least not until Lucas re-releases them in 3D sometime after 2010. Good news - that's no longer the case, as we have received confirmation that the animated movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be playing in theaters on August 15th later this year! The movie is a full-length feature developed from the 25-episode animated Clone Wars series that played on Cartoon Network a few years back. Lucasfilm is launching this new movie in theaters where it will later play on Cartoon Network again before the launch of yet another new animated series. Star Wars is back in theaters again in 2008, baby!

Warner Brothers decided to kick off the series with this theatrical release after they were shown the first footage from the series. Star Wars: The Clone Wars will run around 100 minutes in length and will take place between Episodes II and III. Anakin is not Darth Vader yet and the story will be focused around the ensuing Clone Wars that began in Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Warner Brothers and Lucasfilm seem as excited about this release as we are, saying "I don't know anyone who wouldn't want it" and taking a risk by "trying to do something unprecedented -- marrying TV series and theatrical release."

George Lucas is involved with the project as executive producer. Lucas said he began work on this new spin-off because he "felt there were a lot more 'Star Wars' stories left to tell." And instead of making more live-action movies, he wanted to tell those stories through animation, pushing the technology forward at the same time. Dave Filoni of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" will be directing, with Henry Gilroy, Scott Murphy and Steven Melching writing. No actors from the original movies are involved, except Anthony Daniels as C3PO and Matthew Wood as General Grievous and the battledroids.

USA Today has scored the very first photo from the upcoming animated film of Anakin Skywalker and Jedi apprentice Ahsoka, which can be seen below.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

In this film, Anakin and Obi-Wan are trying to hold together the galactic republic, split apart by war between a separatist robot army and the good-guy white-armored clones. The Jedi apprentice you see above is actually Anakin's padawan, a change from the story that we've been familiar with throughout the movies. However, they're not changing up the Star Wars lore without the help of the man in charge. "George is our guide. He's the creator of the Star Wars universe, so we couldn't have a better mentor," asserts director Dave Filoni.

I know we'll be in theaters on August 15th watching this movie. With the experience I had seeing TMNT in theaters, I'm certainly just as excited to now also see Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The theater is such a great platform and atmosphere to launch this series in, and I can't wait to see all the crowds and people, young and old, who will be there enjoying it together. Another photo has been added below.

Meh. Dragonball is coming out that day! That movie is now kinda screwed but i will watch that not this cheap crappy 3rd rate animated movie based on star wars.

COol on Feb 12, 2008

i can't wait to see the movie!

whynot on Feb 12, 2008

It is very interesting to note that August 15th is the same day as Dragonball is supposed to open in theaters. How odd that they choose the same day as a movie based on another animated Cartoon Network series is being released. I fear now that Dragonball is going to pretty much fail that weekend... Star Wars forever!

Alex Billington on Feb 12, 2008

What happened to Genndy Tartakovsky? I will be immensely disappointed if they keep him out of this. I was under the impression that this was just going to be the series made into a feature length movie, not a completely new beast. Tartakovsky is a genius, they should keep him involved. Not the Avatar guy (who I have a respect for but Tartakovsky is so much better in terms of character and art style.)

Philip on Feb 12, 2008

ARE YOU SERIOUS?! How ridiculous is this!!!!!!!! I can't imagine this doing well at all.

Ryan on Feb 12, 2008

@Alex: Dragonball isn't necessarily a Cartoon Network series. It was just shown on there, Clone Wars was actually a series made primarily for Cartoon Network. The only correlation they really have is that they were both aired on Cartoon Network but that's it.

Philip on Feb 12, 2008

Right, I know, but what I mean is that the same demographic of viewers watch Cartoon Network and thus are most familiar with both shows and thus are the demographics that both movies are trying to sell to. Star Wars has a bit of an expanded viewership (thanks to it being... well, Star Wars), but they both essentially are aiming for the same Cartoon Network-aged viewership... That's why I brought up that point.

Alex Billington on Feb 12, 2008

this is very disturbing. it veers so wildly from the accepted canon. in reference to a padawan having a padawan...this may be a deal-breaker for a lot of fans. I know it is for me. I'm especially jaded from the prequels. now I feel like they're trying to shove another jar jar down my throat. I wonder why we don't have video? is it because they're testing out six year old chimney sweeps from england for the voice of anakin's padawan? george smells some more cash here. I have little hope that this will be any better than the star wars christmas special. If I keep my hopes low and this is maybe as entertaining as a mid-80's micro machines commercial, then I may feel some sort of star wars happiness in my heart.

Corey on Feb 12, 2008

@Corey If you check out the screenshot, Anakin is no longer a padawan judging by his haircut. I'm super jazzed about this. Midnight showing, anyone?

Patrick on Feb 12, 2008

Deal breaker? Get over it. This isn't like the bible or something, it is just a movie. If you can't take creative license in a movie then, well, it is hardly a movie anymore.

haha on Feb 12, 2008

anakin became a knight when the clone wars started. thats why he has a padawan. also anakin's saber is blue the most common color for ranks above padawan. green is the most common padawan color in fact ive never seen a knight besides luke use green.

hyphycore on Feb 12, 2008

@hyphycore Kit Fisto uses a green lightsaber. Also, Master Yoda uses a lightsaber as well!

Lawrence on Feb 12, 2008

Yay!! only caught a couple of the Original Clone Wars and I really liked them, be great to see the whole story together....shame to change the style though, ninjin' Samuel L was awesome.

Dr.Duvel on Feb 13, 2008

This is either going to be awesome or bomb horribly...

Tony on Feb 13, 2008

Blue is a Knight's lightsaber? Erm, no... Luke used blue as a padawan and switched to green. Yoda used a green saber. Anakin and Obi-Wan liked their blueness... it's just personal preference. But yeah, this looks interesting plot-wise but still is a complete waste of the awesomeness that is Star Wars, unfortunately 🙁 Oh, by the way, come to our Star Wars website... TGC

Kypzethdurron on Feb 14, 2008

In response to number 11, no offence but your an idiot. The colour of a lightsaber has nothing to do with rank. The main colours are Blue, Green and Yellow. These denote the type of jedi they are, blue being the Jedi Guardian: those who seek to slash first ask questions later so to speak. Green is that of the Jedi consular: those who seek to find a diplomatic solution to solve problems first, then fight later this can clearly be seen in charachters such as Yoda and Qui-Gon-Jinn. Yellow is rarely seen but denotes the Jedi Sentinal: those who are kind of the reconassiance Jedi. However there are Jedi who whilst maintaning one of these three "specialties" as such choose there own lightsaber crystal. One such example is clearly Mace Windu.

Matthew on Feb 15, 2008

might be a decent film, cant wait till the live action series comes out in 2009

HYPE on Feb 16, 2008

Marrying TV and Movie exposure of the same thing seems to be a bit of an unholy alliance to me .... but it might just work! ( as far as warner are concerned)

Estepona on Feb 20, 2008

This is excellent news! My best pal emailed me and told me about it yesterday and I still am high from the excitement! I can't wait to see how this film handles the Clone Wars as I felt the last TV micro-series was good but not enough. Anakin having a padawan now he is a full knight (no padawan braid!) is an interesting if unexpected twist and I hope it will add a new layer to his story and give more reason for his eventual decline and subsequent betrayal of the Jedi Order (ie she is killed on a mission and he begins to doubt the jedi are doing any good fighting in the War as a result). I don't care what the unsilent minority of internet so called fans say this will be good and I will be in theaters come August!!!!!! The Force is back and I am glad! Thank you Mr Lucas!

Michael on Feb 20, 2008

To Philip, Tartakovsky was released from Cartoon Networks payroll. It is also my opinion that his art style was somewhat lacking when it came to the "Clone Wars" series. I love a few of his shows. Dexters Lab included. Yet his rendition of Clone Wars did not flow right to me.

Matt on Mar 7, 2008

i'm sorry but i think george lucas should just stop with star wars, he keeps editing the original trilogy which is amazing anyway and now he's making this, with only 2 actors from the other movies!!!??? this looks like a terrible star wars movie idea, just terrible...

adam on Mar 14, 2008

I think the Padawan idea is interesting to be sure, its not in any of the official novels. If this is hitting theatres, then I believe it will have to be accepted as canon. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I think however that she must die, and it certainly will add more to Anakin's fall to the darkside, though it will be a little weird for consistency's sake because no other Star Wars sources speak of Anakin having a Padawan. However, the novels written before the prequel trilogy don't reference pod-racing or mace-windu, and they're still good. So the development is neat. And I agree with 10, its a movie and an imaginary universe, it will have inconsistencies, and the story is supposed to change and develop. Get over it.

Shawn on Mar 20, 2008

Heheheh... stop doing Star Wars??! Are you out of your mind>??????>>>>>>> I'm just glad they actually are going to tell how Grievous gets the lightsabers he uses. The movies totally missed out with that part. Slaughter Jedis, take sabers, slaughter more Jedis..... mwuauahahaha!! O.o

Arramon777 on Apr 8, 2008

i just cant wait till this comes out nothing else needs to be said :]

Cay Cay on Apr 15, 2008

This is going to be fun to see i love star wars i am just wondering if your not going to bring back any of the actors then who are the voices that are going to play the main charecters.

lauren on May 9, 2008

I personally think Lucas....if he is goign to keep doing Star Wars material (Which I think he SHOULD) I think he should do a live action series based on Star Wars for tv....likek star Trek TNG did for 7 years and like Battlestar is doing even now. He certainly has all the stageprops and music he needs...he has all the sotries from books and stuff (Crimson empire, shadows of the empire with Kyle, and the Madelorian Wars just to name a few). He has everything he needs digitally, live, audio.....EVERYTHING to make live action TV series for YEARS to come.....THAT is what he should do. Cartoons or cgi animations for something like this seems almost a copout to me.....

Terence on May 10, 2008

i have been a huge star wars fan all my life but the last trilogy left me so bummed, and now this... i have no emotional investment in star wars anymore...

chuck on May 12, 2008

It seems to me that a great deal of you alleged fans, who have no emotional investment in Star Wars any more, are forgetting that Mr. Lucas has always believed in being on / or creating the cutting edge of imagery technology for his vision for his saga. We just get to see what he sees, weather it be in the theaters of the small screen. First there were the Digital remastered VHS Media in 1997, then all digital filming in the Prequel Trilogy and of course the DVDs after that, and finally the Cartoon Network Series leading into thre Revenge of the Sith. If you were paying attention you will notice the totally different media formats that were used to begin bringing the circle to a close. Judging by some of the uneducated comments being made here by a lot of you, who don't know about the intentions Mr. Lucas has for taking the entire saga to 3 - D format in the not to distant future, and if you look up the pending new movie on a particular web based encyclopedia, [Wikisomething. LOL] you will find a small article about the upcoming New Cartoon T V Series Clone Wars sometime soon and the upcoming live action t v series in April of 2010, according to an alleged quote from Mr. Lucas at the Celebration 3 in L. A. CA, called the Skywalker Chronicles, by those of us who [subscribe] [to The Star Wars Insider Magazine], about the Life of Luke Skywalker's growing up in exile on Tatooine, prior to the death of Owen and Beru Lars in Episode IV A New Hope. P. S. Real Star Wars Fans Don't whine, like the Winnie owners do. LOL.

er luke changed his lightsaber to green cus he lost his blue it doesnt mean that hes not a padawan anymore they pick the colors they like from begging to end and in the phantom menace obi wan was a padawan when he started training anakin (also a padawan) so this padawan thing isnt that weird the weird part is that they changed the origanl story by giving him a padawan like the fact that the jedi councel would trust him with a padawan when they feel he needs more training himself

Wolf on May 16, 2008

The force is strong with this one.

JediFreak on May 16, 2008

ok for those idiots who think that the colors mean something, well guess what? they don't. Granted there are general colors used for denoting certain "specialties" of jedi (as explained in comment 16), the color of a lightsaber is no evidence to a jedi's rank (padawan, knight, master, etc.). A color is chosen by the jedi him/herself. And as for Luke, he lost his blue one at the end of episode V, remember? if not go re-watch it. And he only got his new one after he returned to atooine. He went back to Kenobi's hut and found supplies and items there required to make a new one (read the novels). On a different topic, i personally think that Anakin's padawan has to die. One obviously being that she's nowhere else to be found (and yes i know that the story does change with new additions, but i don't think they'd just leave her story open-ended, therefore she must die). She also needs to die because it would certainly add to Anakin's dark side identity (the loss of a padawan, along with some emotional attachment most likely, and the knowledge that he failed as a master, would be good fuel for his dark side fire.)..... completely random, but how awesome is it that his padawan is a togruta? just like shaak ti, one of my favorite jedi!!! Love Star Wars!!!!

eric on May 17, 2008

i think a lot of people are going to come and see this movie and be very dissapointed.

padawan master on Jun 5, 2008

I would also like to comment on something else I found mentioned in here with regards to saber color. aside from teh fact that color means nothing with regards to rank. I noticed someone said Obi-Wan was a padawan himself when he began training anakin in phantom menace. Obi-Wan didnt train Anakin in ANYTHING until after Qui-Gons Death.....and then only AFTER Yoda advanced him in rank to the status of knight and then begrudgingly allowed for Anakin to be trained. I know menace is somewhat hard to watch for most but rewatch teh ending with yoda and obi-wan talking and youll see obi-wan was "promoted" first to knight.....then granted permission to train anakin. Nuff said......moving on..........

Terence on Jun 7, 2008

In II when Obi-Wan needs help from Yoda padawans have GREEN and BLUE sabers and i think this film will be great.

GL for JH on Jun 12, 2008

Having a padawan may be insteresting for Anakin. Although Revenge of the Sith never mentioned of Anakin having a Padawan Learner. So maybe the Padawan will die. Who knows? But this is a surprise.

Take the light saber talk to the Star Wars forums....keep this arena for movie discussion!!!

jedimasterscott on Jul 21, 2008

I am a huge star wars fan. And i can't wait for this new movie to come out. But it is not going right with the story. Like they never menshin anakins padawon or asajj venterus in the story line or jabba having a baby or c3po being captuered by him. and general gerveus it shows him fighting obi-wan but in number 3 it acts like that his first time seeing him face to face. in number 3 general geveus is telling obi-wan that he has been traned in the jedi arts by count doko when in this new movie he fights him so he should all ready know that sence this takes place befor 3 ever happened. but this movie should be enjoable to watch so i am still happy.

Buster Cassavaugh on Jul 26, 2008

i think sence george lucas has so much time on his hands that he should finish the orinal story with 7 8 and 9. with the dark jedi in the fallen hero and the madalorein with the srory republic in crises and the destuction of the dark side it self the dark power in victory of the force. that is what he should be doing.

Fred Cassavaugh on Jul 26, 2008

Do you build your own training lightsaber? By the way the new movie looks great!

I think he should finish 7 8 and 9 to. those were going to be pretty cool! Why dident he finish them!?
