Another Awful Trailer for Steve Carell's Despicable Me Movie

Despicable Me Trailer

Okay, so in the first unfunny teaser trailer for Despicable Me, we were never shown the main character. Now in this second trailer released today on Apple, we finally get to see what he looks like (that's him, the cheerful fellow at the top) and, well, it's not that exciting (and he kinda looks like Steve Carell, go figure!). Worst of all, this trailer doesn't explain any of the plot or story, as far as I know. It's supposed to be about Gru (the guy above) stealing the moon, not a villain rivalry. Instead, all we get is another two minutes of unfunny Looney Tunes antics that probably won't even be in the movie. All I can say is screw this crap!

Watch the second trailer for Universal's Despicable Me:

You can also watch the second trailer for Despicable Me in High Definition on Apple

A trio of orphan girls cause the normally deplorable and evil Gru to rethink his plan to steal the moon.

Despicable Me is co-directed by Pierre Coffin (Gary's Fall), Chris Renaud (No Time for Nuts), and Sergio Pablos (Tarzan) of the new animation house Illumination Entertainment. The screenplay was co-written by writing partners Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul of films like Bubble Boy, The Santa Clause 2, Horton Hears a Who!, College Road Trip. Universal is bringing Despicable Me to theaters on July 9th, 2010 next summer.

You're crazy. The shtick is great. Who are you to downplay Looney Tunes' physical comedy?

Optimistic Me on Nov 4, 2009

These are like all the Scrat shorts they release to sell Ice Age

-Peter- on Nov 4, 2009

I think it looks funny, just because the trailer doesnt show a lot of the plot doesnt mean its bad.. I bet a lot of people get excited ov er seeing some funny animation. I think it just doesnt look that original.. but still funny.

jaja on Nov 4, 2009

looks funny, and you should take it easy alex and not get so mad cause theyre not giving you enough plot details in the trailer for a cartoon

jh on Nov 4, 2009

haha yeah, that Prince of Persia trailer looked woeful and this site praised it, plus what qualified as news was "OH MY GOD I TOTALLY PREDICTED STOP MOTION FOR THE NEXT ROGER RABBIT!! ME ME ME ME!!", but a fun teaser for what looks like a great film gets slammed? What is going on with this site lately? Has limited internet fame gone to your heads? You should consider just giving us the news, because your opinions are becoming more and more redundant

uhh.. on Nov 4, 2009

Seemed like a good trailer to me. It introduced characters, gave me a good feel for the tone and told me nothing at all about the plot. Perfect. It looks to me like we didn't see any footage from the film, it was all tailor-made for a trailer. I go into far too many movies knowing exactly what's going to happen for the first hour. I hate trailers that feed me the plot.

Mark on Nov 4, 2009

Eesh, sorry guys, I can't please everyone. There are people who hate that I liked the Prince of Persia trailer, and there are people who hate that I hated this. It could be completely vice versa, either way, people would still complain. I have a HUGE problem with most animated movies these days that aren't Pixar. Yea yea say what you want, but the crap that other studios put out really gets under my skin. It's not funny, in the slightest, it's just half-rate animation that they think will make them money (and occasionally does). I just won't go for it, sorry, I hate it. I think this looks terrible, not funny in the slightest, so I'll pass.

Alex Billington on Nov 4, 2009

i actually smiled at that trailer more than the entire duration of "UP". the visuals are fun and reminiscent of pixar's incredibles. the lighting is great..voice acting what little there was, was good. this trailer makes it look like an above average "monsters vs aliens" type gig and could do even better depeding on story and so forth. remains to be seen but its worth checking out when more stuff comes out.

Buggy166 on Nov 4, 2009

i just like the song at the end of the trailers.

mrmr on Nov 4, 2009

Looks interesting.

Timothy on Nov 4, 2009

more like despicable movie

cheater on Nov 4, 2009

From both trailers I haven't gotten a lot of feel for this movie...soo Its kind of a good thing. I will most likely watch it because of the voice acting. Its not that bad of a trailer. It just doesn't give you a lot...which can sometimes be good...and sometime be bad. Either way...Steve Carell? I'm there.

Seductive Flamingo on Nov 4, 2009

this doesnt look that bad.

meatcarnage on Nov 4, 2009

Lots of people jumping on Alex. O.o Sorry, I think it looks bad too. "A trio of orphan girls cause the normally deplorable and evil Gru to rethink his plan to steal the moon." Even this plot looks terrible. Jump on me all you want. And the Prince of Persia trailer looked good. ๐Ÿ˜›

Sabes on Nov 4, 2009

Both trailers I've seen for this movie looked not only unique, but clever and funny. Look at the voice cast for this film, yet the trailers haven't had much dialogue at all! They've relied soley on visual humor, and in my opinion succeeded because I think this looks entertaining despite it's cast. Add in the cast, and I'd be in line to see this with or without kids. I'll go out on a limb and say this movie goes on to become the number 2 animated movie this summer (It won't beat Toy Story 3, which may end up being #1 movie of the year if it's good). Steve Carrel has an enormous draw, animation will bring in the families, and it's only going to take good word of mouth to put this movie over the top. I think it looks unique and entertaining. Kind of reminds me of the old spy vs. spy comic strips.

ImaginaryVisionary on Nov 4, 2009

sorry alex, but so far I've liked both trailers. they've peaked my interest, and i love the song in the trailers. this looks better than most of Dreamworks latest work (excluding Kungfu Panda). Go Universal!

dave13 on Nov 4, 2009

I saw the first trailer and I liked it. Now, this (the second) isn't the best, but is still enjoyable as a teaser... I just don't see where is the problem and all the "this-is-the-worst-thing-in-the-world" thing... And, judging on all the comments, I think we all agree!! (and by the way, Pixar isn't that good, y'know, I think is just overrated... "Up" was kinda funny, kinda touchy, but that's pretty much it. Wall-E has some great moments but overall, is kinda slow, and I could go on all day!! )

leiner on Nov 4, 2009

Different humor for different people. Just say that it's not your type of humor, because you can't say that one type of humor is better than another. What makes anyone laugh is a good thing (unless of course in the exception of people laughing at very unappropriate things but you get my drift.).

danielvutran on Nov 4, 2009

I'll stick up for Alex on this one, not to the full extent to say this trailer makes me cry blood, but it's true that it's very misleading towards the actual plot. The plot is about an evil mastermind stealing famous artifacts and this trailer, what somewhat nostalgic and amusing in the Looney Toons slapstick sense, seems to have come out of left field. I don't remember anything about a rivalry between two evil geniuses being a part of plot, so I agree this one leaves me with a big question mark as my opinion.

Rubix on Nov 4, 2009

I like trailers and teasers that don't tell me the whole plot. Inception for instance looks amazing, and I can only guess what it's about (and I will probably be wrong). And the Avatar teaser didn't introduce a story either, and you almost creamed your pants over that one, Alex. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I agree with you, tho, that Despicable Me does not look very funny from this trailer. I liked the teaser with the pyramids a lot more. But, I thought Kung Fu Panda looked retarded in the trailer, too, and that one turned out to be pretty fucking funny. Just wait for more footage before you pass judgement. Wouldn't wanna get a seizure, now would we? ๐Ÿ˜‰

SuicidalOptimist on Nov 4, 2009

so just because this is not like 99% of trailers out there that tell the plot so thoroughly, you dont even have to see the actual movie, this is bad ? This looks ok.

shige on Nov 5, 2009

Hmm this is the first Blue Sky film I ain't looking forward to - Dreamworks have my vote this time round.

dom on Nov 5, 2009

you only think its awful cause its not pixar, you douche

lol on Nov 5, 2009

I generally don't like non-Pixar animated movies either, but this looks pretty good. I liked the first trailer as well, and I don't understand why Alex is so vehemently against this movie. He could at least just say something like, "Looks lame to me, but that's just my opinion," and leave it at that. No one really comes here to just to hear his opinion anyway, since this is one of only a couple trailers he ever dislikes. We come here for all the news, which he is quite good at providing.

scm1000 on Nov 5, 2009

Blah Blah Blah.... Same old Alex! I think it looks like a kids movie, that kids will most certainly enjoy!

K on Nov 5, 2009

It doens't look that bad.

Robbie on Nov 5, 2009

some more 3D F***S*** crap

Cineprog on Nov 5, 2009

Plot: Gru is no longer the worlds number 1 villain. Obviously nobody likes to be dethroned. So he plots to destroy the moon in order to get back on top. However the kid from the first trailer uses his bumbling traits to melt gru's heart and make him see the good side of life! Looks awesome. I also really enjoyed the POP SOT trailer. The game was awesome

Link1983 on Nov 5, 2009

we all love Pixer but there is other 3d animation studios out there that need a chance and from this trailer i found it looks good. #11 mrmr the song in the end of the trailer is Pharrell Williams "Despicable Me"

tazz on Nov 5, 2009

Alex, I get where you're coming from, but as the driving force behind this site, it's a better idea for you not to come off as so opinionated. I know that it's your blog and that you're entitled to your opinion, but I'd split those off into seperate blurbs if anything. It's important for the public to form their own opinions on this kind of thing, and seeing a trailer referred to as 'awful' before even seeing it creates a disposition that some may not feel otherwise. If you want to stay a movies NEWS site, I'd tone it down a bit. If you want to be a movie OPINION site, keep on truckin'. All that said, I'm looking forward to this after this trailer. The first teaser left a sour taste in my mouth, but I'm into the physical comedy this is showing. If nothing else I expect some solid animation out of this piece.

Blue on Nov 5, 2009

While I may disagree on Alex's opinon on this trailer (I thought it looked pretty funny), people really need to stop it with the whole, "HOW CAN Y OU SAY THIS MOVIE TRAILER SUCKED AND YOU LIKED SOMETHING I HATE!!! WHY WON'T YOU AGREE WITH MY OPINIONS? WAAAAH!!!" arguments people are making it. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

SkaOreo on Nov 5, 2009

Awful?!!! I've seen worst. I too love pixar's movies, but I'm glad to see other studios making animated films. It looks like a lot of fun. Actually, I think this trailer is better than Avatar's.

Christ on Nov 5, 2009

I noticed some Spy vs. Spy elements in this trailer. I wonder how much that will play into the movie? And while I am actively trying to only say positive things on these message boards, I find it interesting that so many people are bashing the author of this blog, when if he had said it was a good trailer the same people would have bashed him for that.

Man With No Name on Nov 5, 2009

I actually think it looks kinda good for an animated film. Quality animation, quirky story elements. Who knows?

Marty Martin on Nov 5, 2009

I think it's one thing to be objective and state(in the article) why you think this trailer doesn't impress you, it's another thing to make it blatantly obvious that you're a raging Pixar fanboy. Lots of people are working pretty damn hard on this movie, and the only reason you can think of to completely dismiss it is that "it's not Pixar". No, he doesn't look like Steve Carrell, no, this isn't the first time we're seeing the character, and yes, this trailer does a pretty good job of getting the plot across.

MB on Nov 5, 2009

WTF was that? No, if you like this trailer you like Horrible children's movies, and you have no sense of humor. Sorry, but it's true.

tterb on Nov 5, 2009

U PixarWhore. how much u getting paid for all those nasty comments ?? show me the money !

PinkSushi on Nov 5, 2009

"I have a HUGE problem with most animated movies these days that aren't Pixar." So Al, that just makes you another one of those boring generic pixar fanboys who are narrow minded and soooo tediously predictable with your "reviews" of trailers. Boring boring boring...... Don't get me wrong I love pixar movies and have many friends who work there but it doesn't mean that I think that every other animated movie automatically sucks. Boring boring boring...... The trailers I've seen so far actually looks like the movie has good promise and don't forget the target audience here. These movies are aimed at kids and families. A bit of predictable slap stick comic relief is certainly not a problem for a movie of this type. IT'S A CARTOON!! Please just try and give a more balanced critique in future and leave out the childish comments......

anotherFanBoy..... yawn on Nov 5, 2009

you have friends who work at pixar?

mike on Nov 5, 2009

It was really funny! I know I won't watch it but at least it made me laugh.

DarkPadme on Nov 5, 2009

And, how old are you Alex and the rest of the idiots bad mouthing this CHILDRENS movie? Because last time I checked, this type of animated movie was made for CHILDREN. CHILDREN love things that go BOOM. CHILDREN love prat falls, farts, kooky faces and "Looney Toon Antics". And as the parent of a six year old who loves this crap, I sit through it and blow hard money because MY CHILD loves this crap. My CHILD does not play Prince Of Persia, yet another video game movie and he was only entertained by the balloons and slap stick and that silly bird in Up, not the heavy dead wife-poor widower and other sad over tones. Shrek and films like it always pander to the adult audience members and sometimes it's funny, but it's not necessary for me, I don't have to like it. I'm not watching G-Force or Alien In the Attic for my enjoyment. And I won't be watching Despicable Me with my husband on a date night. I am going to watch it because my CHILD fell off our bed laughing every time the goof got hurt when he watched this preview. Maybe in your ( And the rest of these idiots) perfect world all CHILDRENS movies will posses that magic ingredient that will please grown men, until then stick to writing and complaining about adult movies.

Johanna on Nov 5, 2009

Oh, and while your at it...stop bad mouthing and writing about how bad New Moon looks or how it sucks. Unless you are a 12 year old girl that just got her period, you shouldn't even have an opinion on it or any other Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants demographic movies.

Johanna on Nov 5, 2009

If this were Pixar, Alex, you'd be wetting yourself over how cool it is they're just leaking tidbits of the story. I'm not saying it looks good but watch for those double standards.

Mat on Nov 5, 2009

the 1st part was pretty funny. But this doesn't look like its part of the main story, or any of the first trailer.

Daniel on Nov 6, 2009

I think it was a well cut movie trailer. It didn't give that much of the plot away, and the fact that it's made from the people who brought you "Horton Hears a Who" and "Ice Age" animated movies gives me more EXCITED to see this! You shouldn't label your articles with titles such as "DON'T WATCH THIS" or "ANOTHER AWFUL TRAILER" for movie trailers, no matter how much you hate some of them. Everybody's entitled to their opinion, but that doesn't mean you have to shove it in people's faces:(

cs on Nov 6, 2009

I'm with Alex. These Dreamworks Animation films suck.

Puke on Nov 6, 2009

I thought the trailer was actually good, and somewhat funny. haha.

Totally awesome animation from Universal pictures. Just finished watching the trailer @ and it's just hilarious :). Worlds greatest villain gets owned.

Hector on Dec 13, 2009

I think I'm with #7 on this. Maybe if you simple scaled back the opinions a notch, instead of cranking to 11. It is a news site after all. Oh and the youtube vid was taken down.
