Check This Out: Bruno Punks Conan on the Tonight Show
by Alex Billington

This is why I frickin' love Sacha Baron Cohen so damn much. Not only is he able to just come up with this character and fool countless Americans to begin with, but he's able to keep up the act all the way until its actual release. Bruno appeared on the new Tonight Show last night to talk with Conan O'Brien. Okay, so Bruno doesn't completely punk Conan, he's obviously in on the joke, but I think Conan didn't even see some of this coming. Or at least he didn't know Bruno would strip down and dance on his desk. I've actually seen Bruno already and it is definitely as crazy as this video. Actually, it's a lot crazier than this, unquestionably!
Bruno is directed by Larry Charles, of Borat, Bill Maher's Religulous, and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" previously. The character was created by Sacha Baron Cohen, the comedic mastermind behind Borat, Signor Adolfo Pirelli in Sweeney Todd, and, of course, "Da Ali G Show". Cohen and his cohort Dan Mazer are credited for the majority of the writing in this. After the huge success of Borat, Cohen sold the distribution rights for Bruno to Universal for a reported $42 million and began production last year, prey on more unaware Americans and other idiots. Universal will debut Bruno in theaters everywhere on July 10th.

#1 You should not drink so early in the day.

excuse the guy for trying to make people laugh #1
I have anxiety (and depression) on Jun 26, 2009
he is making stupid people laugh mature people don't laugh at this shit
qweqwu on Jun 26, 2009
I totally agree. Half the reason that Cohen's characters make me laugh so much is because he embodies them so completely. Granted his hijinx can be seen as juvenile but damn it's funny.

How did Conan get punked? Sacha tried to do his stupid, lame, tiresome and played out homophobic wacky shenanigans that we've seen all over TV the past month, "Vvvwwaaaazzzup?" If anything, Conan was a total pro and went a long with Bruno's annoying strip-show like a champ. If that were Jay Leno, there would have been a law suit. CONAN RULES!

I think the same thing is happening with Bruno that happened with Borat. If you watch too much of the advrtisement for it, you will see SBC use the same jokes and puns over and over again. @qwerqu SBC is fantastic at what he does. He can stay in character for hours on end around unsuspecting guests. He is a fresh character (well, if you didnt watch his show) and is so convincing that people around him are in total belief. He needs an oscar to be honest! His humour doesnt only appeal to stupid people, it widely appeals to brainy people too.

The vid isn't loading up for me, anybody having the same problem?
KenDoll on Jun 26, 2009
Yeah, I had a problem too, found a working link here: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9ow0y_bruno-conan-obrien-interview_webcam When he throws his jacket at conan, lol, that's gold. Glad conan is such a good sport about it (obviously he's in on it) - but its still pretty jarring for him haha

People still don't get Cohen's comedy, do they? He is playing off of the pre-established stereotypes that most American's hold about certain people/cultures. He's showing us how dumb we really are, to believe the things he manages to get people to believe. Its genius. Ok, so its not only American's who have set stereotypes, but we are pretty gulible. Not to mention that he's able to come up with shit on the fly. Stand-up comics practice, and rehearse they're shit for weeks, before going on stage. Even if its material they've performed before. To be able to just go like Cohen does is nuts.

Oh man that was great. Thank you #9 for the link since this one won't load for me. Damn that was funny.
Syphous on Jun 26, 2009
How does this guy land Isla Fisher? ah Conan has become funnier to me ever since Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert incident, then the William Shatner birdie! love the guy now!

MMmmmmm yes mature people don't laugh at edgy satire. Mmmmm. I'll take the parrot sketch everyday. Mmmm.
DCompose on Jun 26, 2009
Watch about a minute and closed. Not even remotely funny! Borat sucked... this will suck! It's so obvious that it's someone acting and his style of comedy does nothing for me. It's not but taking things as far as he can to shock and get a rise out of people. Stuipd F'in idiot!
K on Jun 26, 2009
Yeah i have to say this is bullshit. SBC is funny but when i saw borat i just got bored and i think im going to do the same with this. Its like it would be funnier if he acted a bit more coy with the character. He always wants everything to be jaw dropping like people going "OMG I CANT BELIEVE HE JUST DID THAT SHIT!!!!!!" Dude needs to bring it back a notch and its like RDJr said in Tropic thunder " YOU NEVER GO FULL RETARD" AND SASCHA HAS GONE FULL RETARD ON ALL HIS ROLES, thats why everyone is like eeaaaahhhh!
THERBLIG on Jun 26, 2009
ALEX! You'll post this grap but won't post the excellent trailer (The Pacific) for what I'm sure will be another brilliant mini series from Hanks n Spielberg. Man you got your shit ALL mixed up! Not gonna let it go dude!
K on Jun 26, 2009
Yeah, this sucks. This is nothing that any number of kids can't or haven't done honestly. He can just get more access to places because of who he is. It's weak, stupid, and tiring. Not too mention, I would have shot him with a gun if I was out hunting with him, acting like that, and I actually believed he was for real. Call it an accident.
w00t!!! on Jun 26, 2009
Ah, that was hilarious. I dont think I'd say he "punked" Conan, though - he seemed to go along with (and even enjoy) the whole thing. Can't wait for the movie! (I did have to use #9's link, though - the embedded vid in the post wouldn't load)

MY god. so much american hating. get a life people. I'm in the US and it's not loading for me either. I highly doubt there's a conspiracy to keep you from watching it jeez. If you dont like him then dont pay to see it and shut the fuck up. I'm gonna pay to see it. I'm gonna laugh end of story. I'm sorry if the laws in your country dont allow you to laugh at certain things. #11 Nate, thank you. #20, youre retarded. Alex or whoever. No offense but why do you guys sometimes remove my comments when they're not exactly on topic (I'll make a joke or whatever) but you allow disgusting hateful comments above to be shown? DONT LIKE AMERICAN MOVIES. THEN GO BACK TO WATCHING YOUR LOW BUDGET CRAP. YOU GUYS ARE CALLING AMERICANS STUPID WHEN YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY ACTING EVEN STUPIDER (if that is a word). and lastly if your country ever gets stomped on, you'll be looking at us to help. Hate us till you need us fuckin idiots.

What people so often miss is the genious of Sasha's so called "juvenille" antics. The man chooses a popular cultural element and embodies it so phenominally that he turns it on it's ear. First, he shows us how stupid the element is, but before he's done, he also makes us realize the folley in our own misjudjement of the very same element. Oh, and also, it's always gut-bustingly funny. So open your mind and take it all in, we're lucky to have this man in entertainment.
Mark on Jun 26, 2009
I loved this! This really really made me laugh, but I also loved borat. I'm also a big fan of Conan's and he definitely seemed to get the joke.

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Bruno - ''I swapped him'' Lady - ''swapped him for what?'' Bruno - ''an ipod''.....*crowd boos*.....''what? it was limited edition Red!'' LMAOOOO can't wait for this film!

#23, pay attention to the way this country behaves, we are the stupid ones. i agreed with you at first, up until you started insulting the other countries. our country has hit rock bottom, deal with it. have you ever watched any of the other countries "low budget crap?" it's actually really good, what i've seen at least. these movies are showing how stupid americans can be, think about it. "hate us until you need us" really? are you that naive?
Tucker on Jun 26, 2009
i have been excited to see bruno for the comical genius behind sasha baron cohan. but i saw the show and two things are obvious Conan is no jay leno Bruno wasnt as funny as he has been in all the snippets and clips from the movies... am still waiting to catch bruno (the movie)
viral on Jun 27, 2009
I watched this and didn't really think it was very funny. Bruno had a tough time staying in character as far as I was concerned. Borat was way funnier when he wrestled Harry Smith on the CBS morning show. Like 28 said, Conan is no Jay Leno. He really isn't doing very well yet. Needs to change his schick. I find myself flipping between Conan and Dave most nights and not caring for either.
Moviegimp on Jun 27, 2009
Yeaht it still amazes me how people dont get Sascha Baron Cohen. The dude is a genius, well more like borrowing from earlier comedic geniuses, most notably Andy Kauffman. Second, if the Borat movie was any indication Bruno will probably not live up to Da Ali G Show.

# 23 People like you are the reason that American tourists put a Canadian flag on their backpack when traveling. You are the epitome of the "ignorant, stupid, overly patriotic, better-than-everyone American" stereotype. Way to stand up for your country. Lol.
SuicidalOptimist on Jun 27, 2009
#31, yeah you got me down to a T. Sike. Oh and, shut the fuck up.
I have anxiety (and depression) on Jun 27, 2009
For the record, no I'm not a flag waver. I am a an american by default. Are we perfect? No. Is there alot of stupid americans? yes. I came here to watch a Bruno clip, laugh and all I read is Fuck America shit. Sorry, but it kind of pissed me off. Like Bruno is the cause of the worlds problems and it all came back to this movie. I'm sorry but that's fuckin stupid. I had to throw it back at them. #31, I actually plan on maybe retiring in Canada, so again, shut the fuck up. Go ahead, tell me I'm not welcome. #27, yes I do like some foreign films, but at the same time, like I said, alot of it is low budget crap. I'm not trying to sound arrogant but american films rule. That's why they get played world wide. And I pay plenty of attention to the way this country behaves. So much infact, that it pisses me off alot. I dont hate america, I'm just embarrassed and want better. There's just so many stupid people. Excuse if my paragraph wasnt perfect. I was a little annoyed. "I AM THE EPITOME OF IGNORANT, STUPID, OVERLY PATRIOTIC, BETTER THAN EVERYONE AMERICAN" STEREOTYPE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! If you only knew, and trust me you dont.
I have anxiety (and depression) on Jun 27, 2009
true genius at what he does.........amazing stuff. he gets away doing whatever he wants to do on screen leaving behind all of us in a shock, whether to laugh at it or not. leaving ppl confused. but it is truly an ingenius way to show the mirror to ppl. p.s. not everyone gets it. i am glad some do.

I sense a lot of hate coming outside the states. I thnk Borat was funny. If he was playing a dumb American I think half the people commenting here would think it was brilliant.

S.B. Cohen must be getting tired because his British accent came out at times in this appearance. He borders at times on absurd but by the mere fact that he is playing a role against actual unknowing participants about subjects that may appear uneducated, phobic or just clueless makes him a comical genius as it garners actual responses that are in those distinctions. People in general are dumb and uneducated with phobias and beliefs that are just, insane, to anyone who knows better.

I'm going to sound like some jaded old man or something, but, I really think that Sacha Baron Cohen is a "one trick pony." I saw Borat and found some parts of it funny. I've also seen that movie where Ali G joins the English Parliament, and it's actually the same thing: Sacha Baron Cohen puts some oddball character in the middle of a bunch of "normal" people that don't know how to react tho the characters weird habits and ideas. Sure, Borat and Brüno are made in "mockumentary" style and the Ali G movie is completely scripted and acted out, but, fundamentally, it's the same. When I saw the trailer for Brüno, the first that came to my mind was "Wow, this is like Borat but with a gay reporter instead of a middle eastern one. Dude has no creativity left." and stoped the trailer before it even ended.
