COMIC-CON 2009
Early Comic-Con 2009 Buzz: Who and What to Expect!

June 15, 2009
The 2009 San Diego Comic-Con kicks off in 37 more days (on July 22nd). That means geeks everywhere are starting to get very excited and we've started planning our coverage. While it's expected that Comic-Con won't officially announce all of their panels and presentations until sometime in July, we've heard some early details on who might show up. For those who thought it might not have been a good year - just wait until you see what could be there! There may only be one superhero movie next summer - Iron Man 2 - but that doesn't mean Hollywood isn't bringing some of their other highly anticipated movies to San Diego!
Remember: unless otherwise specified, most of this is unconfirmed. We'll let you know once it's official!
» It has already been confirmed (by the NY Times) that Peter Jackson will be in attendance this year in support of District 9 with director Neill Blomkamp as well.
» Producer Frank Marshall mentioned that Miyazaki's Ponyo will have a big presence at Comic-Con. But does this mean the master filmmaker himself, Hayao Miyazaki, will be at Comic-Con? We hope so!
» Disney will be bringing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time as their centerpiece. It's also likely that Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland will show up and that Pixar will bring Toy Story 3.
» Word leaked out earlier this year that Disney would debut an official Tron 2 trailer at Comic-Con.
» Warner Brothers' presentations will include Sherlock Holmes with Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. as well as our first look at Jonah Hex with Josh Brolin and probably Megan Fox.
» In addition to Sherlock Holmes, Downey Jr. will also be helping Jon Favreau promote Iron Man 2. They'll be back again to blow away fans with what could end up the most exciting panel this year.
» We've heard that Fox may be going all out with Avatar. So if you're attending, this is where you'll be the first to see any footage from the movie (in 3D) and it's likely James Cameron will show up as well.
» Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly confirmed already via MySpace that he'll be there to show off his new movie The Box with Cameron Diaz and James Marsden most likely in attendance as well.
» Sony's presentation will definitely include 2012 and maybe Phillip Noyce's Salt (so claims the LA Times, although it's not official), which means we could see John Cusack and maybe Angelina Jolie.
» We haven't heard anything from Universal, but it's likely they'll have another panel on The Wolf Man, since it was delayed until November, and we hope they bring Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim as well.
» Word is that Mike Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat will be screening to kick off its road show.
» We've heard that James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin may also be screening early (via SlashFilm).
» Zack Snyder will be in attendance to do a Blu-Ray Live showing of Watchmen one of the nights.
» Derrick Comedy's feature film Mystery Team will not only be screening one of the nights, but the entire cast will be part of a Ballroom 20 panel with Paper Heart and they'll have a booth on the show floor.
» We've heard there will NOT be anything from Michel Gondry's Green Hornet, Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, or Christopher Nolan's Inception. But there could be things from Where the Wild Things Are.
So there you have it! As I said, this is looking like a great year, even if there aren't that many big comic book movies due out in 2010. I already can't wait to get down to San Diego. Comic-Con is one of the greatest times of the entire year and for five days straight we all get to live and work in geek heaven. Not only are there screenings and presentations and panels but there are plenty of parties and meet-ups and other great events. It all kicks off on July 22nd and runs through July 26th. Unfortunately I think all of the passes are sold out, however you can check the website for more information. See everyone down in San Diego soon!

Besides the smelly fat people/people with mad BO, little rascal kids running around knocking things around, your occasional rude people, and not don't forget the nerdy anime/scifi-fantasy geek Comic Con is something that should be experienced once in your life.

There are several rumors surrounding Heroes. One says that there will be no Heroes presence. Another states there will be no panel. We're waiting till we hear something more official till we post at HeroesARG.com

I hear rumors that there may be an official trailer for the new Tron 2 movie they are working on? That'd be cool.

Can't wait until July 22nd (Preview night!!). I just hope the security people are a little less rude this year. Give them an inch of power and they take a mile! I hear Depp may be there - I'll wait all day in that line!!

#6 Last year was one of my worst experiences with fellow attendees in all of my years of annually attending Comic-Con. The 'Twilight' fan girls were mostly very rude and abrasive. I hope security and staff learned a much-need lesson this time around.

Yea i have to agree, the "Twilight" fan girls and moms are very protective and can be rude. Do watch out as there will be a camp out all Wednesday into Thursday as the panel is rumored to be then. ~ I've got the four-day pass and thank goodness! its my 3rd year and each year is better and better. Nerds raise your hands to the air!!!! woo-hoo!

They need to rename the event. It hasn't been about comics in about 10 years.

Yeah...nothing I read there had anything to do with comics really. Comic movies, so yeah, you could argue it, but seriously? Sherlock Holmes? Tron? Avatar? WTF do these have to do with anything?

I am hoping Gerard Butler will show up for Gamer. What do you think? A sci-fi and video game movie.

@ 11. The only reason they are talking just about the movies on this website is because IT IS A FILM WEBSITE, NOT A COMIC-BOOK WEBSITE. There is still a beyond MASSIVE Comic-Book presence at Comic-Con. I was in attendance last year and sat through a breathtaking presentation by Grant Morrison for one. Pretty gutted I am not going this year, had the time of my life last year but it is so expensive flying from the UK to San Diego every year, but i will defo return in 2010! Comic's & Films for life!

SAW 6 Please SAW 6 I need the trailer hell I'd settle for a test screening! I believe they trailed 4 and 5 at previous comic cons.

Way back in the day, it was nothing but comic books and that was fun too but it was a lot quieter. I never stood in lines of any kind for panels then - you just walked in when the time came. There was no Hall H - that was a parking lot. It is much different now but I like it better. Much more exciting.

Ogar - RIGHT ON!! Why would someone read this article just to insult Comic Con fanatics. I have been going for years - I take the entire family - and I just don't notice these "nerds" of which they speak LOL. Actually, I see them but, seeing as I'm pretty much a fringe nerd myself, I don't see them as out of the ordinary. They are so much fun to be around - the people they call nerds don't carry airs about themselves and just enjoy the simple things in life. Everyone there is having a great time and we get to see a lot of interesting people and San Diego is AMAZING! 23 days until I leave! I'm starting off in Vegas and then we are driving down to SD for the big show!

Fuck all of you fucking losers, you are pathetic and worthless. You are not even human fucking beings and you disgrace the very ground you walk on with the imprint of your foot. You are fucking lowlife garbage and I'm going to go out now and stomp a nerd's ass dry.
