Public Enemies Trailer

Universal has just debuted the trailer for Michael Mann's highly anticipated Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. Depp stars as the infamous 1930's bank robber John Dillinger and Bale as his FBI pursuer Melvin Purvis. Those of you who have been anxiously awaiting your first glimpse better check this out, because it looks like we might have another crime movie as exceptional as The Untouchables on our hands. It's got that distinct Michael Mann style (think Collateral), but set in the 1930s and infused with tommy gun action. This definitely looks like it'll be a summer hit, that goes without saying!

Public Enemies is directed by Michael Mann, of Heat, Ali, Collateral, and Miami Vice previously. The screenplay is based on Bryan Burrough's book of the same name and was adapted by Ronan Bennett (A Further Gesture). Later, Michael Mann and Ann Biderman (Copycat, Primal Fear) wrote a revised screenplay before shooting. The film has an all star cast made up of Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, David Wenham, Leelee Sobieski, Marion Cotillard, and Billy Crudup as J. Edgar Hoover. Universal is bringing Public Enemies to theaters everywhere on July 1st this summer.

Batman vs. Jack Spearow..... can't get any better

stevedawg on Mar 4, 2009

Depp Vs. Bale... looks awesome. I've been waiting for a preview of this for awhile, I can't wait. I don't know if it was just because of my computer but did anyone else notice a home movie vibe with the cinematography.

theotherbluth on Mar 4, 2009

The editing was a little shaky, but I'm willing to live with it in an early trailer like this. Looks like it'll be a really nice gangster film that we haven't seen a good while. A decent one anyway...

Will Schiffelbein on Mar 4, 2009

what a year this is going to be!!! too many ace films to list! lets hope it doesnt let us down... trek, transformers, salvation, watchmen, public enemies, wolfman......

craig on Mar 4, 2009

Epic Gangster Flick!

Brandon on Mar 4, 2009

academy award winner Marion Cotillard as the hopefull lover.... go women ! all Johnny Depp !! come on I want to see more Johnny vs Bale action !

DarkPadme on Mar 4, 2009

I think the movie itself looks awesome, and shot beautifully as usual with Mann, but... Does anyone think that the music for this trailer is just totally killing the mood and feel of the movie? I mean at first, it sounds like something out of the matrix, then it goes into something you would hear in Heat, then at the end, it sounds like something from Audioslave or at least that style of music. I can't wait for this movie, but I really hope they don't plan on using this kind of music in the movie, it just seems like it doesn't fit at all.

Dino on Mar 4, 2009

i'm gonna be that guy... what's the song at the end of the trailer?! no really

avant576 on Mar 4, 2009

Acting looks good, but I'm going to have to agree with #5, it did feel very home video.

joe on Mar 4, 2009

Bale and Depp going head to head with Michael Mann filming=Amazing. Also, we could use another old time gangster flick, can't wait for this one.

Ryan on Mar 4, 2009

SICK!!!! Michael Mann's filming style is amazing, and the cast added to that will make it a must see.

tankmaster on Mar 4, 2009

Robbing banks is the best.

Crapola on Mar 4, 2009

I honestly think Michael Mann is a huge fan of Audioslave....their songs were on Collateral and Miami Vice that I know of.... Movie looks great though...I hope it has the same kind of cinematography that the previous 2 Michael Mann movies had...I think the gritty look would fit this film quite well... Depp looks awesome in this

jfc3po on Mar 4, 2009

Looks like fun, but could they show any more of the movie in the trailer? dayam.

cyn on Mar 4, 2009

Meh... looks a bit boring, and like it was shot on an expensive camcorder.

Marty Martin - IMAGEN Films on Mar 4, 2009

Serious cast.

sumonesumtime on Mar 4, 2009

I think this time period is the best for gangster movies also, good cast

-Peter- on Mar 4, 2009

#11 and 16 Its not Audioslave, it is however the lead singer from Audioslave. His name is Chris Cornell and I heard his new cd is streaming on his myspace page. From what I've listened to its crap, except for the song in the trailer, its decent. This movie looks bad ass, I may have to see it in theaters.

John on Mar 4, 2009

The video quality reminds me of the dramatization scenes they film for crime shows on the Discovery Channel or something. That isn't a good thing. I want to like this movie but my mind wandered off about halfway through the trailer. It's probably just the trailer's fault; maybe it's too long or something.

Zso on Mar 4, 2009

#4 that was super gay!

dac on Mar 4, 2009

That looks great! I always felt Mann's treatment with the camera stock always made the footage that much more in the moment and candid. It's like it deflates the 'hollywood movie' vibe yet keeps the excitement of it being a thrilling film. Looking forward to seeing the cast clash!

Nick Sears on Mar 4, 2009

Jaf on Mar 4, 2009

looks good

Trey on Mar 4, 2009

Hmm, another 'too much' trailer? Looked like every plot turn 'cept the ending. Should do okay, though I pray it's not Miami Vice in old clothes. That was dire.

sleepykid on Mar 4, 2009

Wow, not much else I can say! Actually yeah can! SWEETTASTIC!

xerxerxex on Mar 4, 2009

29's based on a true story.

Itri on Mar 4, 2009

About time! This movie seems really distinctive from others, its like an indie film mixed with typical Hollywood flair, cant wait to see how this great cast carries this film!

Nikhil Hariharan on Mar 4, 2009

Looks great! The line about Indiana made me laugh so hard I cried... Cause I'm from Indiana and there's absolutely nothing I want to do in Indiana...

Nate on Mar 4, 2009

Johnny Depp looked like T-Bag (from Prison Break) with that nice little beard. xD

Jericho on Mar 4, 2009

awesome, but i just hope that Mann learns from Miami Vice and shortens the romancing and inserts more bullets.

Matt Suhu on Mar 4, 2009

Shot on digital? Appears to be, can definatley tell the difference.

Mike on Mar 4, 2009

looks pretty fucking good, hope it's as cool as the fucking classic heat.

zetsu on Mar 4, 2009

looks badass.............can't wait.

dan on Mar 4, 2009

wat is the song???????

tamson on Mar 4, 2009

digital noir? please, no.

rocken on Mar 4, 2009

Yeah, director's are really digging shooting films on digital nowadays. I prefer proper cameras, not handheld, but that's just me.

Movie Fan on Mar 4, 2009

Mann is a great director. But he doesn't know how to digital technology in a filmic way. Digital can look like film, but a lot of this was shot at low shutter speed.... A dead giveaway that it was shot on digital.

Marty Martin - IMAGEN Films on Mar 4, 2009

I'm uber glad to see Billy Crudup's also in this. I feel like he could give Bale a run for his money, given time. Ever hear the band DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN? Their music should be in this. And for all of you - who has top billing in this movie? Huh? That's what I thought.

Django on Mar 4, 2009

Btw - the scene where he tells her he's a bank robber is similar ( and frankly, weaker ) than an establishing scene in the PHENOMENAL film, "IN BRUGES". In a different world - I'm just saying - Colin Farrell would be playing Dillinger, based on his performance in that mind-blowingly amazing film. RENT IT. NOW.

Django on Mar 4, 2009

The picture looks far too perfect given Manns recent film styles... and the funny thing is this one could really have done with looking less crisp and more old school.

dom on Mar 4, 2009

looks damn cool makes me want to start a life of crime 🙂

neonblue on Mar 4, 2009

i have read from blogs of people who saw the screening it is shot on hand held cams. and you can tell durring the car chase scenes and when johnny is giving her the coat. actor and character named johhny i know his name is jhon dillenger but got confused for a second when she screamed "johhny!". and this is the second website and theird time i'm asking What's the name of the song? some one please.

mike on Mar 4, 2009

This looks great! And the Michael Mann thing about the use of certain type of camera is also great, since it gives everything a particular sense of reality. Let's see if: a) Marion Cotillard finally can do her lines without that frech accent (pronounce it: "FGENCH ACCÉNT"), and if b) Christian Bale is not done professionally wih Johnny Depp after this, haha.

Leiner on Mar 4, 2009

you had me at Bale, Depp and Mann...looks freakin' sweet!

Boo-Yah on Mar 4, 2009

Ten Million Slaves by Otis Taylor

t on Mar 4, 2009

It looks like classic Michael Mann Crisp and full of bullets .. Miami Vice Old School

albert on Mar 4, 2009

#27 I definitely agree with you. Why do trailers have to reveal so damn much. I'm on the verge of ceasing to watch them. #29 Based on a true story means nothing.

Bobby Simpson on Mar 4, 2009

looks awesome! should be really fun.

crAziemutant on Mar 4, 2009

They should've reversed Bale and Depp's roles.

Bob on Mar 4, 2009

Now THAT looks good!

Kevin on Mar 4, 2009

The music for that was pretty terrible.

Knight Rider on Mar 4, 2009

WHen i watch this movie i feel like im watching a japanese movie because all of them nowadays are shot video like Stacey or Tokyo Gore Police or Machine girl. But i dont mind, it just feels like a made for TV movie but il still watch this!!!

REAL6 on Mar 4, 2009

I would have liked to have seen Depp play Baby face Nelson, who will absolutely be in this film. Depp has the young feminine look going for him, and his ability to act genuinely psychotic would have been perfect for Nelson. As Dillinger... I'll have to watch the film before passing judgement but I probably would have picked somebody else to nail down Dillinger's character. He had a Humphrey Bogart quality, Depp doesn't have that.

Chris H. on Mar 4, 2009

I think Mann is actually shooting this the same way he's shot his other recent stuff. Reducing the size of the image to this low resolution just makes it look less grainy and less 'digital'. Look at the night shots and the flares and you can see that the same sort of camera is being used. But it's really not in the camera and is instead the lighting that gives his stuff that sort of look. He doesn't use as much indirect lighting, which gives his stuff that sort of stark high-contrast style. I love it. It gives the film a much more realistic tone, IMO.

Squiggly on Mar 4, 2009

Identity chrisis! This film is trying so hard to look like a vintage era movie but it looks like a suped up version of a vintage movie. I remember someone mentioning this before on a previous screener review and he hit the nail on the head. Other than that it looks great!

dee on Mar 4, 2009

It could be good but I'm sort of afraid it's going to be bad. Or maybe that's just the trailer, which is badly put together and cut with a mish-mash of music that undermines the dramatic content.

Timothy on Mar 4, 2009

So when does he put on the cape?

Unseen on Mar 5, 2009

Been waiting for this one. Gonna be HUGE!

Dexter on Mar 5, 2009

i dont think its goin to be big, it will open with around 40 million. but depp and bale will be nominated for oscars.

Darrin on Mar 5, 2009

4tzw4z5 on Mar 5, 2009

this will be the best movie ever

tom eck on Mar 5, 2009

LOOKS AWESOME! But yea hope this is kind of a "pre" trailer, cos it looks like it hasnt been edited enough.. Looks a bit amateurish. Or something. Just doesnt look like I wanted it to look... At least in the trailer. Still waiting for this so much!

max on Mar 5, 2009

cinematography look sorta crappy 🙂

sng. Sheep on Mar 5, 2009

Looks like modern day actors trying to portray bank robbers and FBI agents from 70 years ago. I thought I was supposed to forget they were acting? This sucks! No Oscar nods and the music also sucks! We already know the story...Dillinger dies...who the fuck cares!

Joey Marione on Mar 5, 2009

I don't know if it will be as good as The Untouchables, that's hard to top, Untouchables was bad ass. That being said, I am looking forward to this movie. I love time pieces, especially the 30's and 40's. Who would've ever thought when I watched Empire of the Sun that little kid would grow up to be Batman, John Connor, and now Melvin Purvis. SWEET!

bourneidentity on Mar 5, 2009

well it sure doesnt look like its gonna be sharing any seats with the untouchables but looks a decent fun movie that ca deliver very good acting and action at the same time 😀 it sure is worth seeing

burak "D'aequitas" on Mar 5, 2009

The name of the song is "Ten Million Slaves" by Otis Taylor. But the version in the trailer is different.

Purvis on Mar 5, 2009

This is definitely going to be one of the better movies this summer, rather than just a bullshit, lets-rack-in the money blockbuster like's Bay Transformers. Proper gangster flick. I love it. Rock on Depp.

Conrad on Mar 5, 2009

I think Depp will own the movie.

Fisherr on Mar 5, 2009

I actually liked the music. Puts a modern spin on the material. This will be an exciting summer movie; won't win awards but will definitely entertain.

Delvis on Mar 6, 2009

luks damn awesum. and #50 it means that because it's based on a true story it can't go far off the main plot so anyone who knows the real story will have a good idea where its going. and does anyone know the name/artist of the last song? i looked on that Chris Cornells myspace but that song isn't on there. i love the musc because it adds intensity to the ending scenes. luks damn fine!!!

phillz91 on Mar 7, 2009

Depp as Dillinger, need to see it 🙂 *Puts Dillinger Escape plan in the stereo*

Max on Mar 7, 2009

sylgaia on Mar 9, 2009

this looks so good

deppbalelover on Mar 13, 2009

bad music...very strange video photography. looks like a discovery channel, reconstruction in parts. so much for state of the art hi def digital being better than film. half a million dollar electronics and this looks like a 3000 thousand dollar camera. i guarantee, this will not be a patch on chinatown the untouchables, la confidential. mann has not made a decent film since heat.

adoyle on Mar 14, 2009

Why is Depp CG in one image?

Ryderup on Mar 20, 2009

If Christian Bale can talk like BATMAN then this movie will rule! and lets hope Bale finally gets to kill somebody...couldn't as Batman and won't as John Conner....return to the American Psycho and be a badass again

Danny on Mar 24, 2009

man.. you can really tell its shot on digital.. Maybe they're going for a more "viceral" feel but to me the weird picture aberrations could have been all avoided if he shot on film..

Hughe on Mar 31, 2009

Another glorification of gun slinging scum. Typical amateur story telling. Take a punk, a killer, one of worst people on earth and retell their story wrapped in heroic gift paper. Turning losers into heroic winners is not only lame it's just plain stupid. Just what I would expect from this director.

Stan on Apr 3, 2009

Preview of Batman v.s. Riddler?? Who knows!!!!!!!! For all we know, it could be!!!!! This movie looks great, can't wait till it hits theatres.

Aaron on Apr 4, 2009

Stan - you are a girl wearing little pink panties. Go watch the Last Temptation of Christ and pray for the sinner bank robbers of our time!

SinnerinMe on Apr 4, 2009

#6 is the biggest idiot in the world talking about the editing being shaky. Its a trailer you moron. Just because you finally found out what editing is doesn't mean you have to start critiquing trailers. You have no idea what the editing in the movie will be like so why comment? You aren't even a film snob. You are one of those idiots who wants to present himself as a film snob to feel superior when you only know the bare minimum about film. Why didn't you comment on the cinematography? Atleast you can get a good feel about that.

david on May 31, 2009

This looks great, just hope Bale doesn't ruin it with his usual dry delivery.
