First Full Trailer for Michael Mann's Public Enemies
by Alex Billington
March 4, 2009
Source: Apple
Universal has just debuted the trailer for Michael Mann's highly anticipated Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. Depp stars as the infamous 1930's bank robber John Dillinger and Bale as his FBI pursuer Melvin Purvis. Those of you who have been anxiously awaiting your first glimpse better check this out, because it looks like we might have another crime movie as exceptional as The Untouchables on our hands. It's got that distinct Michael Mann style (think Collateral), but set in the 1930s and infused with tommy gun action. This definitely looks like it'll be a summer hit, that goes without saying!

Public Enemies is directed by Michael Mann, of Heat, Ali, Collateral, and Miami Vice previously. The screenplay is based on Bryan Burrough's book of the same name and was adapted by Ronan Bennett (A Further Gesture). Later, Michael Mann and Ann Biderman (Copycat, Primal Fear) wrote a revised screenplay before shooting. The film has an all star cast made up of Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, David Wenham, Leelee Sobieski, Marion Cotillard, and Billy Crudup as J. Edgar Hoover. Universal is bringing Public Enemies to theaters everywhere on July 1st this summer.

Depp Vs. Bale... looks awesome. I've been waiting for a preview of this for awhile, I can't wait. I don't know if it was just because of my computer but did anyone else notice a home movie vibe with the cinematography.

The editing was a little shaky, but I'm willing to live with it in an early trailer like this. Looks like it'll be a really nice gangster film that we haven't seen a good while. A decent one anyway...

I think the movie itself looks awesome, and shot beautifully as usual with Mann, but... Does anyone think that the music for this trailer is just totally killing the mood and feel of the movie? I mean at first, it sounds like something out of the matrix, then it goes into something you would hear in Heat, then at the end, it sounds like something from Audioslave or at least that style of music. I can't wait for this movie, but I really hope they don't plan on using this kind of music in the movie, it just seems like it doesn't fit at all.

Bale and Depp going head to head with Michael Mann filming=Amazing. Also, we could use another old time gangster flick, can't wait for this one.

SICK!!!! Michael Mann's filming style is amazing, and the cast added to that will make it a must see.

I honestly think Michael Mann is a huge fan of Audioslave....their songs were on Collateral and Miami Vice that I know of.... Movie looks great though...I hope it has the same kind of cinematography that the previous 2 Michael Mann movies had...I think the gritty look would fit this film quite well... Depp looks awesome in this

#11 and 16 Its not Audioslave, it is however the lead singer from Audioslave. His name is Chris Cornell and I heard his new cd is streaming on his myspace page. From what I've listened to its crap, except for the song in the trailer, its decent. This movie looks bad ass, I may have to see it in theaters.

The video quality reminds me of the dramatization scenes they film for crime shows on the Discovery Channel or something. That isn't a good thing. I want to like this movie but my mind wandered off about halfway through the trailer. It's probably just the trailer's fault; maybe it's too long or something.

That looks great! I always felt Mann's treatment with the camera stock always made the footage that much more in the moment and candid. It's like it deflates the 'hollywood movie' vibe yet keeps the excitement of it being a thrilling film. Looking forward to seeing the cast clash!

Hmm, another 'too much' trailer? Looked like every plot turn 'cept the ending. Should do okay, though I pray it's not Miami Vice in old clothes. That was dire.

Mann is a great director. But he doesn't know how to digital technology in a filmic way. Digital can look like film, but a lot of this was shot at low shutter speed.... A dead giveaway that it was shot on digital.

I'm uber glad to see Billy Crudup's also in this. I feel like he could give Bale a run for his money, given time. Ever hear the band DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN? Their music should be in this. And for all of you - who has top billing in this movie? Huh? That's what I thought.
Django on Mar 4, 2009
42
Btw - the scene where he tells her he's a bank robber is similar ( and frankly, weaker ) than an establishing scene in the PHENOMENAL film, "IN BRUGES". In a different world - I'm just saying - Colin Farrell would be playing Dillinger, based on his performance in that mind-blowingly amazing film. RENT IT. NOW.

The picture looks far too perfect given Manns recent film styles... and the funny thing is this one could really have done with looking less crisp and more old school.

This looks great! And the Michael Mann thing about the use of certain type of camera is also great, since it gives everything a particular sense of reality. Let's see if: a) Marion Cotillard finally can do her lines without that frech accent (pronounce it: "FGENCH ACCÉNT"), and if b) Christian Bale is not done professionally wih Johnny Depp after this, haha.

I would have liked to have seen Depp play Baby face Nelson, who will absolutely be in this film. Depp has the young feminine look going for him, and his ability to act genuinely psychotic would have been perfect for Nelson. As Dillinger... I'll have to watch the film before passing judgement but I probably would have picked somebody else to nail down Dillinger's character. He had a Humphrey Bogart quality, Depp doesn't have that.

I think Mann is actually shooting this the same way he's shot his other recent stuff. Reducing the size of the image to this low resolution just makes it look less grainy and less 'digital'. Look at the night shots and the flares and you can see that the same sort of camera is being used. But it's really not in the camera and is instead the lighting that gives his stuff that sort of look. He doesn't use as much indirect lighting, which gives his stuff that sort of stark high-contrast style. I love it. It gives the film a much more realistic tone, IMO.

Identity chrisis! This film is trying so hard to look like a vintage era movie but it looks like a suped up version of a vintage movie. I remember someone mentioning this before on a previous screener review and he hit the nail on the head. Other than that it looks great!

It could be good but I'm sort of afraid it's going to be bad. Or maybe that's just the trailer, which is badly put together and cut with a mish-mash of music that undermines the dramatic content.

Looks like modern day actors trying to portray bank robbers and FBI agents from 70 years ago. I thought I was supposed to forget they were acting? This sucks! No Oscar nods and the music also sucks! We already know the story...Dillinger dies...who the fuck cares!

I don't know if it will be as good as The Untouchables, that's hard to top, Untouchables was bad ass. That being said, I am looking forward to this movie. I love time pieces, especially the 30's and 40's. Who would've ever thought when I watched Empire of the Sun that little kid would grow up to be Batman, John Connor, and now Melvin Purvis. SWEET!

luks damn awesum. and #50 it means that because it's based on a true story it can't go far off the main plot so anyone who knows the real story will have a good idea where its going. and does anyone know the name/artist of the last song? i looked on that Chris Cornells myspace but that song isn't on there. i love the musc because it adds intensity to the ending scenes. luks damn fine!!!

Another glorification of gun slinging scum. Typical amateur story telling. Take a punk, a killer, one of worst people on earth and retell their story wrapped in heroic gift paper. Turning losers into heroic winners is not only lame it's just plain stupid. Just what I would expect from this director.

#6 is the biggest idiot in the world talking about the editing being shaky. Its a trailer you moron. Just because you finally found out what editing is doesn't mean you have to start critiquing trailers. You have no idea what the editing in the movie will be like so why comment? You aren't even a film snob. You are one of those idiots who wants to present himself as a film snob to feel superior when you only know the bare minimum about film. Why didn't you comment on the cinematography? Atleast you can get a good feel about that.
