First Look: Russell Crowe as Robin Hood

This is definitely the time where we're getting a lot of first looks from Hollywood! Over on USA Today, they've debuted the first photo of Russell Crowe as Robin Hood in Ridley Scott's version of Robin Hood. We've written plenty about this film for a while now, so I don't think there's much I need to say to introduce this photo, but thankfully producer Brian Grazer walks us through the new look anyway. "He doesn't have the old Robin Hood tights," Grazer says. "He's got armor. He's very medieval. He looks, if anything, more like he did in Gladiator than anything we're used to seeing with Robin Hood." Oh hell yes, bring it on!

Russell Crowe as Robin Hood

"Oddly, it's a metaphor for today," Grazer tells USA Today. "He's trying to create equality in a world where there are a lot of injustices. He's a crusader for the people, trying to reclaim some of the ill-gotten gains of the wealthy. That's a universal theme." Anyone else out there getting shivers just thinking about seeing a Gladiator-like version of Robin Hood? Because I am! Ridley Scott has directed a few fairly underwhelming film recently (e.g. Kingdom of Heaven, A Good Year, Body of Lies), and nothing has been as good as Gladiator, at least since that hit in 2000, but this time I think he may finally be getting back to that.

OH hells yes. This shall be shamazing. Ridley has finally found his ground.

Zach on Apr 19, 2009

Yes! he looks good and focused again, like he did in gladiator

Scott McHenry on Apr 19, 2009

man Crowe ages well looks like he did in gladiator that was many moons ago Crowe is putting great performances lately cant wait

nelson on Apr 19, 2009

Grazer said it best. He looks like Maximus from Gladiator. I'm hoping this will be of that calibur and less Kingdom of Heaveny.

Widescreen Wonderland on Apr 19, 2009

He looks exactly like he did in Gladiator - so much so that this could be a shot from a cut scene! (Of course I know it isn't, but you know what I mean...) Very promising, although they'll have to go a long way with their villain to equal the brilliance that was Alan Rickman in Prince Of Thieves!

Mathieu on Apr 19, 2009

I dont think Crowe was a good choice for robin hood. he would be better as the sheriff of nottingham

Dan W on Apr 19, 2009

Looks sick need a trailer, but kingdom of heaven and BoL were hugely underrated if ya ask me.

Cody on Apr 19, 2009

Wow he looks splendid, very natural, he certainly did shape up for the part!! .

Daisy on Apr 19, 2009

I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'ma get medieval on your ass.

There was so much talk about this movie that I had no idea it had begun filming. This is gonna be very interesting indeed.

He lost a lot of weight. I'm glad. I admit I was worried that he'd hold onto some of his puffiness.

ebbie on Apr 19, 2009

This will become THE version of Robin Hood!

Layne on Apr 19, 2009

#17 hahaha and i is excited!

DoomCanoe on Apr 19, 2009

Body of lies was great! Yes! Russell Crowe ate DiCaprio for breakfast (for real! XD), and i like DiCaprio Can't wait for this...

m4st4 on Apr 19, 2009

I can't believe you said that Kingdom of Heaven is underwhelming. Alex I'm disappointed you would say that. But this Robin Hood should be really good, but let's wait until some more photos come in or footage.

Andrew on Apr 20, 2009

Time will tell.. Amazing how he's lost the weight so fast from State of Play. Does anyone know if this is shooting in the uk and if so where?

dom on Apr 20, 2009

#22. Sorry man but Body Of Lies was just ok. It is not a film you could have repeat viewings of. Alex you are the man. You got it spot on. Ridley's last great film was Gladiator, and over the past nine years all his other films have been forgetful. Russell looks the part and I am just hoping that this will be on par with Gladiator and not Kingdom Of Heaven.

Bizzaro on Apr 20, 2009

This looks really good. Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott together again and Crowe looks in shape. Body Of Lies surprised me and Kingdom Of Heaven is a very underrated movie.

skywarp on Apr 20, 2009

Maximus Hood,I like it.

Fisherr on Apr 20, 2009

Looks darker than...other stuff (although this is only one photo)

TomV on Apr 20, 2009

Fantastic !! I'm really excited about this film... I think it's going to be the most accurate medieval period film made, and since the Robin Hood story and persona is mostly legend, what I want is a great tale, with a great actor playing the mythological Robin as he might have been. Looks like we have it here. Crowe is such a chameleon ! He's never the same in any film. I'd watch him in anything.

Sunny on Apr 20, 2009

What a great look for the film. I read that Janty Yates, who did the costumes for Gladiator is in charge of them for this too. Crowe debuted his Robin Hood short hair and fit physique last week while promoting his latest film, State of Play. It's great, by the way, really exciting and thought provoking. He's fantastic in it, as he is in everything. Robin Hood film just got underway a couple weeks ago, shooting in the UK. It's going to come out next year about this time, so I think it's a long time before we'll see a trailer, but thanks to producer Brian Grazer for this "first look".

macca on Apr 20, 2009

#25.. WTF???!!!! Your memory is the only thing that's forgetful! Didn't you see Matchstick Men or American Gangster? Do yourself a favour little buddy and check them out! Crowe & Scott will Unleash Hell all over again!!!! FUCK YEAH!!!!! OH &.... How awesome would it be if Joaquin was the Sheriff?!!!! Maybe that's what's with that fucking beard!

Hercie on Apr 20, 2009

Super excited for this!

????? on Apr 20, 2009

BTW Alex; (the directors cut of) Kingdom of Heaven was awesome!

????? on Apr 20, 2009

This will be amazing!!!

K on Apr 20, 2009

Well good he lost the weight. For a while there it seems he just wants to get fat. Looks like he had to work out for this.

AllmightyKeim on Apr 20, 2009

wooooah i been waiting for a new robin hood..... go Ridley!

werdnafaz on Apr 20, 2009

A few underwhelming recently... eg. Kingdom Of Heaven!? Are you crazy!? KOH was Ridley Scott's best movie. Had beautiful visuals, amazing story, the soundtrack was bang on, epic battle scenes, a near perfect movie. That is of course the extended directors cut. Personally KOH was better than Gladiator. Wow, amazing how people can watch the same movie but differ so much.

K on Apr 20, 2009

you say... "but this time I think he may finally be getting back to that." How can you say that, from one picture, that this will be on on par with Gladiator??? That's just a silly comment! and you also said nothing has been as good since Gladiator. How can you say Black Hawk Down, Kingdom Of Heaven or American Gangster are not as good if not better than Gladiator. Those are all amazing films. Sometimes I wonder about you Alex. To each their own I guess...

K on Apr 20, 2009

I want the trailer NOW!!!!!!!!!!! Ridley Scott is one of the best modern directors hands down. He always brings such epic scale and is so great at filming period movies. If you haven't yet, watch The Duellists. The Kevin Costner Robin Hood will be tough to beat and I hate Costner. If anyone can do it, Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe can.

Brandon on Apr 20, 2009

40 spandex!

flamer on Apr 20, 2009

Kingdom of Heaven underwhelming? Try under appreciated, far to may people seem to base how good a movie is based on dollar take in the theaters rather than how good the movie's content is. KOH was simply a masterpiece and one of the best movies I have seen in a great many years. Orlando Bloom was excellent, Scott was bang on in the directors seat and frankly I think this is one movie that was so overlooked in the oscar department only because they id not spend enough to present to the Academy rather again by how substancial it was. IMO

Nottingham: Why doesn't the hero reveal himself and tell us all your real name? You do have a name. Robin: My name is Prince of Thieves. [turns away from Nottingham] Nottingham: How dare you show your back to me! Thief, you will remove your hood and tell me your name. Robin: [removes hood and turns around to face Nottingham] My name is Robin of Locksley, an English nobleman and Christian, member of the Third Crusade, loyal servant to the true ruler, King Richard the Lionheart. Son to a murdered father, reunited with my long-lost brother. And I will have Maid Marian, in this life or the next. [Nottingham trembles in disbelief] Gisbourne: Arms! *insert score by Hans Zimmer*

Flynn was cool, Costner sucked, Bugs Bunnys version rocked, and Crowe looks awesome!

George on Apr 20, 2009

First, let me say that I love Russell Crowe in just about everything he's in, and I love Ridley Scott (especially Gladatior and Kingdom of Heaven). That being said, there is just something a little... off about his costume here. I don't doubt that they will make a believer out of me when it comes out, but what's with the weird look of the leather thing around his neck (that apparently is part of his hood)? I like the leather arm guard/bracer and the rest, but it just looks a little odd...

Oh...hellz yeah Crowe got his 'Gladiator' face on, I'm officially hyped for this version of Robin Hood.

PimpSlapStick on Apr 20, 2009

#31. Dude if you think Matchstick Men and American Gangster are any good, you really need to get out to the movies more. Those films especially American Gangster where big let downs. Denzel plays a bad guy better in Training Day and let's face it Russell Crowe was down right boring in that film. A great movie to me is something that I can watch over and over again and not get bored of it, and American Gangster is not that film, but Gladiator is. I know everyone has diffrent types of taste in film, but when it comes to making great flicks Ridey Scott only makes one every so often. Next you'll be telling me the G.I. Jane is your favourite movie.

Bizzaro on Apr 20, 2009

You're just to stupid to understand and truly appreciate how great "Kingdom of Heaven" was. Underwhelming is more a description of your taste in movies.

V Wilson on Apr 20, 2009

#52 Matchstick Man was a LETDOWN? : ( GET DAUUN!!! XD American Gangster? Well, I'll give you that...

m4st4 on Apr 20, 2009

#53 Oh, and Kingdom of Heaven is a very good movie, but only Extended edition.

m4st4 on Apr 20, 2009

now i would love to see a gladiator alike version of robin hood

I meet Russell Crowe tonight in my Pub 'The Good Intent' They are filming in Puttenham, my village!!! Exciting!!

Aimee on Apr 23, 2009

Aimee, good onya! Wow! To see the man in flesh hanging out at your nearby pub must be a jaw-dropping sight. 😀 Man, I just can't wait for this movie to come out next May 14, 2010. I sense that it would be nothing but AWESOME! It just can't go wrong with Sir Rid, Russell, Cate Blanchett, Vanessa Redgrave, Mark Strong, William Hurt, Max von Sydow and, the last time I checked, Matthew Macfayden also joins the cast as Sherriff of Nottingham. Still no news about who would play Friar Tuck though. 🙁 All hail Max... um, I mean, ROBIN HOOD!! Wooohooo!! 😀

Francisca Susi on Apr 24, 2009

Costume is a little gay, don't you think? No studded black or brown leather, no broadsword or dagger, no purse and that bow looks far too new. What's with the suede lace-up chav boots that look like they came from Tesco for 15 quid? I know Russell is not a big guy but these make him look like a size 6.

harry on May 18, 2009

XD Oh I'm excited, but to see Macfadyen in this movie. After watchin' him in Spooks 'n' Pride & Prejudice has make this more interestin' uhm... I don't think Crowe looks good...let's see how this comes...

nouki on May 27, 2009

Crowe looks good as Robin Hood to me. Could this be the first decent modern Robin Hood film? Robin Hood and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (both 1991) were both unbelievably APPALLING!!! Please, RS, do the story justice.

Are his feet tiny or what? Like a little ballerina's.

Malcolm on Jul 12, 2009

Finally, maybe a recent film worthy of his calibre. State of Play wasn't that great. You go, Russell! I love you, Lucky Jack Aubrey!

Cindy on Jul 17, 2009

this is going to be awsome

armando on Aug 10, 2009

Russell should do alot more of these epics and medieval roles. He is a Richard Burton type actor!! I can't wait that long to see him in a movie, though!!I hope really that he gets away from the detective and westerns, and more into these epic type roles. He'd be great in a re-make of Cleopatra, and The Robe, and movies like that!!!!He's the second coming of Burton!!! I LOVE him!! Denise D. Southbridge, MA.

Denise Desaulniers on Sep 3, 2009

Really....Again? Great story, but how many different times can it be portrayed. Starting to be like Dracula, one movie for every decade.

Andrew on Nov 23, 2009

Crowe's MADE his money ---so WHY is he wasting time on retread slop like this? ---ESP. in 2010 ---on the once again 'mysteriously overlooked' 60th Anniversary of the epic, urgently relevant --indeed, STILL unfolding ----KOREAN WAR! Where's Crowe? Where's Scott? Where's Hollywood?
