First Teaser for M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender
It's about that time of year again when we start to see teasers for next summer. Paramount has debuted the first short teaser trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon. Yes, this is the very same Shyamalan who brought those thrillers like Signs and Unbreakable. Not only is he making an action adventure movie oriented more towards kids this time, but he's going big, very big, as you'll see in this teaser. Newcomer Noah Ringer stars as Aang. He's joined by Dev Patel, Jackson Rathbone, Cliff Curtis, and Nicola Peltz. Even if you don't know much about this, you'll still want to see it!

The Last Airbender is directed by M. Night Shyamalan, of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, Lady in the Water, and The Happening previously. The screenplay was written by M. Night Shyamalan while the story was co-written by Shyamalan and creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. This is based off of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender that first debuted in 2005. Paramount is bringing The Last Airbender to theaters everywhere on July 2nd, 2010 next summer.

interesting.. could this movie help M. Night get out of the slump he's in?
shaun on Jun 22, 2009
*trailer guy deep voice* " Next Summer get ready for the adventure of a lifetime " I think I'll trust M. Night with the creators of the show to actually succeed in bringing this awesome tale to life!!!! I just hope my fav character Toph is in it too! Earth bending rules!!!!
Lazarus on Jun 23, 2009
It looks like it could be that new Potter type of film....I'm down, as long as there isn't some dumb ass Twist at the end or lame ass "make you think" ending.
Stan 'The Viewers Choice' Morrow (Facebook Me!!!!) on Jun 23, 2009
Ferrrrrrrrrrnt..."What a twist!"
Marqwest on Jun 23, 2009
Oh gosh...this looks cheesy as hell.
w00t!!! on Jun 23, 2009
SFX looks B-ish at best so far. We'll have to wait until a full trailer to make the final verdict.
Ken Masters on Jun 23, 2009
I was a little concerned that they would wreck one of the best American-made anime that is "Avatar The Last Airbender", but with this trailer I breath a little easier. #2 Yes, Earthbending does ROCK!!!!
Big Buck on Jun 23, 2009
i think it looks great, even though i havent liked his last few movies, i still think he's a pretty good filmmaker and im glad to see him branch out!
brian barajas on Jun 23, 2009
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-trailer-the-last/51238 Much better HD quality.
Ali on Jun 23, 2009
This is an awesome teaser. I love the end too, bringing the epicness of the Fire Nation to life. Hopefully the sfx shown are the unfinished ones for those specific scenes, because it looked at bit cheap.
Alfredo on Jun 23, 2009
I wonder how those ships are going to turn around...
Mark on Jun 23, 2009
I hope this is a return to form for Shyamalan - I love Signs & Sixth Sense and liked Unbreakable & The Village. Maybe adapting someone else's material instead of wring it from scratch will mean he focus on just making a great film.
Sumit on Jun 23, 2009
#3 ... the only thing that's lame is your nick Night is an awesome filmmaker. Unbreakable is possibly the greatest and less cheesy superhero movie ever and Signs and Sixth Sense are awesome. Okay, his last two movies were crapier than crap but i beleive that this guy has still great things to offer.
Michael on Jun 23, 2009
Doesn't seem like they stay true to the original story (trapped in iceberg, etc) - and that they empathies Air Bender instead of Agn being the Avatar. Honestly, if you're going to do a movie out of a cartoon, you better do it right. Overall, looks good. Some misspoints of course (like the Air Nomads being a powerful nation... pfft).
Felix on Jun 23, 2009
that kid flailing around looked like my friends kid playing in the backyard. and the special effects don't look all that great...............i'll pass.
dan on Jun 23, 2009
@Mark I don't think they are planning to turn around.
casshern on Jun 23, 2009
Robbie on Jun 23, 2009
SFX look a little weak, but I think thats because they aren't done yet. looks pretty good, if nothing else, looks epic. I'm still down. doesn't look ruined and I've always liked M. Night (except for The Happening... we don't talk about that...)
dave13 on Jun 23, 2009
you know hwy the fx don't look phenomenal yet wait for it.................. they are not even done filming yet they started filming mid march they have over a year to work on the cgi guys
nelson on Jun 23, 2009
this should never had been touched. this trailer doesn't impress me, and neither does the director nor the casting, they've ruined a beautiful thing, bit extreme, but thats how i see it, its going they way of 'x-men', 'wolverine', 'street fighter' and 'dragonball'.
gray on Jun 23, 2009
I've never seen the cartoon and it still looks pretty appealing.
Farris on Jun 23, 2009
I've been an Avatar fan for a while now and was interested to hear about the movie and who would be doing it. I must say, it looks amazing. A side note: Its nice to see Shymalan branching out and not just giving us the same thriller/horror movie with a twist that we are so used to seeing. I think this could put him on the map again if he starts to branch out and direct different movies.
????? on Jun 23, 2009
"He's the last of his kind...! Some think he is a myth...! Some believe he is the chosen one...! ...a world at war! ..and some will stop at nothing!" My god, can you put more clichés in a fucking trailer. Horrible.
Angelo on Jun 23, 2009
@ 13 - Michael - Unbreakable was good? How in the world was that good? That is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I enjoyed Sixth Sense and The Village, but Unbreakable was just awful.
Mattyc on Jun 23, 2009
looks pretty fucking good.
zetsu on Jun 23, 2009
some of you pricks forget that the movie is not particularly done for you never-growing-up-adults-who-act-like-childish-dorks. they do it for kids and maybe for teenagers. so stop complaining about clichés, stupid voice etc.
lol on Jun 23, 2009
Oh, so we're going for the "well, its for kids" argument now? Good going. That maybe so, but that doesn't somehow mean that abominable voice-overs in trailers are then oke. That's ridiculous. You might implement some kind of formula, that has proven it works, into your film, so to make the plot understandable for kids, but having the most ridiculous clichés in your trailer is just fucking bad. No matter for who you made the film.
Angelo on Jun 23, 2009
Badass! Now lets see if he can actually end the film properly. Seems that shyamalan knows how to tell a story, but not finish it.
Nick Sears on Jun 23, 2009
At first the stick part was a bit 'Star Wars Kid' like, but I checked the High Definition version and it does look a lot better. The cartoon series was really good and even if it comes close to that then it will be a good movie. The only thing with the tv series was that the characters were neither good or evil and were defined by their choices they made on the journey, I'm not sure how this will translate into a blockbuster film, usually it has to be spelled out in thick black marker pen who is good and who is bad at the very beginning so people don't freak out.
Crapola on Jun 23, 2009
I have some hope that Shyamalan will do a great job with this, the reason why are. 1.He isn't writing it (thankgod) 2.He is a great director with doing Sixth sense, Signs. 3.Im curious to see how he'll handle a fun action movie.
Ryan on Jun 23, 2009
@26 Have you ever seen the animated series that this film is based on? It may have been a cartoon, but it appealed to adults as well as kids for the same reason that Pixar films are enjoyed by people of all ages.
dax on Jun 23, 2009
He's baaaaaaaaack. Hope this is a hit for him. Poor guy needs a hit. Very talented director.
Fingo on Jun 23, 2009
I liked that trailer...looks cool
Trey on Jun 23, 2009
I was convinced that this would turn out a disaster considering M. Night's last few films, but the teaser actually looks pretty good. However, I can't go too easy on it yet. I need to see some REAL footage, involving acting and fight scenes.
Andrew on Jun 23, 2009
@14 The creators of the show were looking over M. Night for the writing process as well as the filming of it, so it will be true to the show. Who says that is how the movie starts? That is probably later on.
really? on Jun 23, 2009
Don't know the cartoon, but the teaser trailer looks nice imo.
cine_phil on Jun 23, 2009
Trailer looks epic, but the voice-over sounds like it has been done before.
Ajax on Jun 23, 2009
LOL yes I was thinking it was the Star Wars kid as well..
Bezelbub on Jun 23, 2009
I thought unbreakable was an awesome movie, had a one of the smartest stories ever. Good trailer though but those fx need some work.

I've never seen the show but for some reason this trailer reminded me of that movie with the warrior kangaroos that had the elemental powers. Can't remember the name.

A bunch of white kids playing Asian characters...
Henry Jones Sr. on Jun 23, 2009
Very promising. I've been watching the show and, if done right, this has the potential to at least be a lot of fun if not, perhaps, the next big fantasy trilogy as Harry Potter bows out in the next couple of years. From the teaser, at least, it looks like they haven't preserved much of the show's sense of humor, but maybe that's just because someone executive at Paramount couldn't help having the dire, over-the-top, end of the world voice over going over. Other than that, it's odd that the trailer features only Aang when the show is about friendship, but that's what you get from a 'concept' trailer like this . . . I haven't finished the show yet, but I wonder if any of the footage in this trailer is even really in the film, or in the film in the way they cut it here.
Timothy on Jun 23, 2009
I'm very excited for this film. I was a little worried about M. Night, but the trailer looks great. Looking forward for the next trailer--I've love to see the other actors.
Noelle on Jun 23, 2009
@Felix. THEY ARE STICKING with the iceberg, he is the Avatar and they WILL be emphasising this. He wasn't allowed to call it AVATAR: The Last Airbender because fuckin james cameron had the rights to the name "Avatar" @#2 Erm.. movie 1 spans the first season.. Toph doesn't appear until the second season. EARTHBENDING does RULE! but we won't be seeing Toph till the next movie.
Dresden on Jun 23, 2009
So what will the twist ending be?
SlashBeast on Jun 23, 2009
I remained a fairly faithful fan of Shyamalan through thick and thin (though I do agree his earlier films were better). I think that this film does have a chance of putting him back on the good side of mainstream success and I look forward to seeing this. However, I do wish that people will stop assuming that Shyamalan adds a twist to his films (by my count, only Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and The Village had true twists).
Sean Kelly on Jun 23, 2009
I'm skeptical but it looks promising.

I seriously hope they release at least one trailer with the Katara doing the voice over.
keicharones on Jun 23, 2009
I seriously hope they release at least one trailer with Katara doing the voice over.*** Abba and Momo are going to make or break this film.
keicharones on Jun 23, 2009
You guys should keep in mind that M. Night Shyamalan is really good at making trailers. But his movies fall apart. However, this isn't based on one of his ideas, so cross your fingers.
The_Phantom on Jun 23, 2009
@57-58 keicharones I totally agree. I always envisioned the first official full length trailer as the original really long opening from the first episode. Or maybe just the normal opening with Aang on his Air scooter ramming into the rock. Appa and Momo WILL make or break the film. But it's ILM, more specifically the same people that worked on Transformers and the ones that worked on Where the Wild Things Are. So.. think of this as Where the Wild Transformers Are Airbending. (I would TOTALLY watch that.) On a side note, the next trailer BETTER HAVE Sokka, Katara, Zuko and at least a glimpse of Iroh! Oh, and hope for some Appa and Momo in that one as well. Can't wait to see how awesome they make Appa look.

this cartoon is for nerds and this movie is for nerds!.. ha nah, wanted to stir up some hate because everyone seems to know what this is about and i haven't got a clue. but so far we've seen some white kid blow wind and twirl a stick...well its going to take a lot more then that to sell me Shyamalan! (still to this day I'm pissed that i spent money on "The Village" and "Lady in the Water")
DoomCanoe on Jun 23, 2009
My first reaction to this is...WHOA! This could get him back in good graces with his fans.
Brian on Jun 23, 2009
Loved the show. I was a total late bloomer until I caught a marathon on nicktoons. From there I was hooked. I really hope this works for the leagcy of the show. Doesn't feel too far away from its time like dragonball or streetfighter. Does anyone know if M.Night will make this a little darker??
Mr j Money on Jun 23, 2009
He's definitely going big with this one, haha. I hope it's not too kiddy, though.
Andrew on Jun 23, 2009
He probably should tackle this genre, because his other movies suck.
I have anxiety (and depression) on Jun 23, 2009
Pretty good teaser trailer, must admit. However this movie just sounds boring. Especially for M. Night
Conrad on Jun 23, 2009
The trailer looks good. If the movie isn't filled with sarcastic jokes like in so many American movies, it should be great. No more wise cracking, sarcastic, mature beyond his years lines yet still immature kids.
Phil on Jun 23, 2009
Ok..that was pretty sweet,I'm interested
PimpSlapStick on Jun 23, 2009
@64 dude, he's just wearing a robe, and it looks more like a jedi robe than a franciscan monk robe so chill out. Jeez, you'd swear Asians never used robes. Besides in the show, in the third season we see Zuko wear robes similar in appearance that. They probably just did it to replace that little orange neck flappy thing the Aang has in the show because in the picture they released of Noah Ringer as Aang, he didn't have it.

Ya know... I like some of Shymalan's earlier work... but why the hell does he have to put his name in front of everything? It's kind of a turn off at this point. He's not fucking Aesop for chrissakes.
bozoconnors on Jun 24, 2009
I've never seen this cartoon but after some research I've read up on it and have a basic grasp of the story. This is a kid's cartoon so, it would stand to reason, this will be a kid's movie. Am I wrong? I understand that a lot of young, and probably some older, adults have gotten into the show but wouldn't their target audience still be kid's, young males to be specific?
S on Jun 24, 2009
I hope this one pans out, Night is a great filmmaker and well he owes us after The happening.... Also if he screws this up he'll have a mob of angry avatar fans on his hands. GL M.night...
curtfrmcali on Jun 24, 2009
At this point it's safe to assume we know nothing about what the film will be like. Aside from the actor race ordeal.

Um... Has everyone forgotten about the controversy surrounding this film? It seems that despite a very loud public outcry, Shayamalan will continue to step on the core audience of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The cast and culture of this movie is completely wrong. Simply put, Aang Ain't white. Please do yourselves a favor and check out these blogs that have a ton more information about this questionable movie adaptation of a fantastic cartoon. http://derekkirkkim.blogspot.com/2009/01/new-day-in-politics-same-old-racist.html http://aang-aint-white.livejournal.com/646.html http://celtherapy.blogspot.com/search?q=avatar

I was excited about this movie...until I realized that it was live action. Seems cheesy to me. I love the cartoon and watch the re-runs all the time, I even have them on DVD. However, I am not a big fan of Shyamalan, I thought that most of his movies were cheesy and predictable, I just have to hope that I am wrong with this one because I will be so disappointed if this movie completely thrashes the series.

unbreakable is one of the best movies ever made. all of m nights movies were ok but unbreakable was a masterpiece. there wasnt alot of action but the story beats anything ever made . comic books being a way of passing down the story of super humans that protect the rest of us. remarkable. it made m nights career. its tied with the chronicals of riddick way better than the dark knight transformers anything ever story has its beginning stop wasting time with avatar and continue unbreakable unbreakable also gave birth to heroes

@ #14 they had to call it the last airbender as "AVATAR" was taken by James Cameron (looks good) This really has great potential as a movie and M. Night i think can nail it.
Mr Suntail on Aug 9, 2009
M. Night has a brilliant mind but also has tendencies to create "watch em' once" films. i hope he steers clear of that and does this wonderful story justice. if he screws this up, imma show up at his door step and beat him with DvDs of the villege!
