G.I. Joe Sequel is Already Going into Development Soon
Yo Joe! I would say this was inevitable, but then again, the buzz for G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra was so bad that no one knew if it'd do well on its opening weekend. But this proves that franchise familiarity is king in Hollywood, even with bad buzz. In the LA Times report on the weekend box office (G.I. Joe ended up with $54.7 million) they say that "the studio's vice chairman, Rob Moore, confirmed that a sequel will soon go into development." This is great news for those who liked it, but bad news for everyone else. "The film's lead actors are contractually obligated to return for another film, though director Stephen Sommers is not."
I think this is the kind of movie that a lot of people will be excited for the sequel. Hell, it sets up a sequel in a big way at the end, almost as a cliffhanger. And you've just got to see the newly recruited G.I. Joe's get revenge on that annoying Zartan, right? Although they make it sound like Stephen Sommers won't return yet, let me remind you that he did come back to direct The Mummy Returns two years after The Mummy proved to be a big success for Universal as well. If I can make one suggestion to Paramount - don't bring back Sommers! If only this had better CGI and a better script, I might've enjoyed it just a little bit more.
Great popcorn flick! Just how I played with them as a kid *wink *wink. Okay Bring back some of the other badasses now. Firefly, Sgt Slaughter, scrap iron etc. And give Cobra Commander his G*d Damn Mask! Cobra!!

Sequel?? So be it. Alex, I think you should just read a book and forget about movies for a few days.

I don't care whether Stephen Sommers returns or not... I just want to see Lee Byung Hun back as Storm Shadow as a good guy! I thought he was the best part of the movie! Oh... and more of Snake eyes as well.

I haven't seen this yet - I'll wait for the DVD - but on past form I'd say Sommers is probably the lesser evil of the Hack Pack (W.S. Anderson, Ratner, Boll, McG, Cohen, etc.). He does seem to have a sense of humour about himself at least, his films are occasionally fun - in a pure cheese kind of way (Deep Rising, The Mummy) - and you can generally see what the hell is going on in his action sequences, which is a rare thing these days. Whenever he's interviewed he does seem like a nice guy, so I feel a little bit sorry for him with all the vitriol being hurled in his direction by critics. If he somehow could be persuaded to hire a decent screenwriter and scale back the crappy CG that is his forte he might deliver an adequate sequel, but we'll see, I guess...

DoomCanoe on Aug 10, 2009
You know what's funny and mildly interesting? As kids, all of us would make our G.I. Joe action figures do stupid shit like backflips off the couch and onto a toy car and crushing it or spider-run up a wall, land on a couch cushion then karate kick a toy car half way to hell, but when we see all of our childhood imagination come to life on the big screen -- with alot of help from special effects, what do we do? We bitch and moan about how cheezy, corny and lame the whole movie is. Fuckin humans. The older we get, the more naive we are.

Amen Nem. Well said.

I only thought Snake Eyes was cool....Reminds me of Deadpool.
Scott on Aug 10, 2009
Storm Shadow better return! He was fuckin' awesome!!!! I enjoyed the movie save the love interest plot lines. That was so not needed but I could deal with everything else by turning off my mind to oldies Joe.

I want to see Shipwreck dammit!
Jasn on Aug 10, 2009
If they were to have Shipwreck in the sequel, They also need to bring his Parrot. Anyways, I would also like to see Lady Jaye.

I don't understand what's wrong with the editor of firstshowing.net. Why is he so negetive after G. I. Joe from day 1??? I too believed him in the begining that the film might be a big flop if he's saying that but now since the film has become a hit. I checked other sites as well like comingsoon.net where people were honest about their views and not following somebody else's opinion like this guy is doing. PLEASE, STOP BEING PERSONAL WITH FILMS. Be honest.

How can u say a sequel will be good 4 some people who did like but not good 4 the others that didnt like it. As far as im concerned if u didnt like it stiff shit its not a bad thing doin a sequel for fuckin sooks that didnt like it. If u didnt like it and u r not interested in a sequel ive got the perfect solution dont watch it. im sick of hearing everyone so negative wif every movie that comes out. i like anything and everything coz i dont take movies to serious so 4 fuck sake stop bitchin like a pack of pussys and get over it.
Donza. on Aug 11, 2009
Donza: shakespeare reincarnate. On another note, i saw this tonight, and as cheeseball as it was, im not sure if it was because i laughed through the whole thing or what, but i have to say i did enjoy it, at least more than transformers 2!
Brian Barajas on Aug 11, 2009
@20, Right On! I was just about to post the exact same thing. Alex, your "This is great news for those who liked it, but bad news for everyone else." comment is bull crap and as Donza pointed out, stop bitching about stupid things like this. If you don't like it, how is it bad news for you? Just don't freaking watch it, no one is forcing you. Geeze!!!!
The One on Aug 11, 2009
I liked this movie. Sure it was cheezy but so what.
Vold on Aug 11, 2009
GI Joe was a great action flick, and if Transformers 2 had been put together in a similar way (ie: no casual racism, annoying stereotypes, action you can easily follow, plot which makes sense) then it would have been the most badass summer action flick ever. The action was good in Joe, and they did break the Blues Brothers record for demolishing cars, which is cool. Sure, the fx weren't up to those from TFormers, but they were good enough and didn't spoil it. I firmly believe if you replaced Bay with Sommers, and Sommers was still in the zone, had $300million and his studios support, Transformers 3 could be the greatest thing since someone attacked bread with a sharp object. oh and #19, i think the site guy from here was one of the 'journalists' who Twittered during a screening of Crank 2 in order to say how shit it was. You soon learn to just read the factual news, watch the trailers and ignore him.
ChrisUK on Aug 11, 2009
Just saw this last night and I liked it a lot. Was able to enjoy it for what it was. The Paris scene was rock and roll.

#19...this is not CNN or the New York Times man. It's a blog, that's all. Alex is a blogger. It's sad this world actually pays people for this but whatever. Be nice actually see people take their job seriously but obviously it was more for MTV "journalism" than actual journalism.
Tra la la la la di da on Aug 11, 2009
I saw the movie last night ... and while it was a good action flick and what a live-action JOE movie ... they need to do a few things before I would consider seeing it ... don't want to give away spoilers but >>>>> Cobra Commander better have a freaking hood or silver mask in the next movie!!!! ... next is Destro better be more of a charismatic, double dealing villain. You almost rooted for him in the cartoons and the way he was portrayed in the movie was more like a jealous sugar daddy bent on controlling the world rather than the actual arms dealings. Next BARONESS is better as a villain and needs to be that way in the sequel. Also folks, who doesn't believe that Gordon-Levitt should have been Dr. Mindbender and Cobra Commander pulling the strings from behind.
John on Aug 11, 2009
even if it had a bad script, it was extremly enjoyable, it was funny, action packed, and it moved at a very fast pace. just swallow your pride and admit that u enjoyed it.
bob on Aug 11, 2009
