Here It Is - First Real Footage from G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra!
by Alex Billington
January 31, 2009
It's rare that I write about something that will become obsolete in under 48 hours, but today I'm making a big exception. Entertainment Tonight has debuted a less-than-10-second teaser for the new G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra teaser that will be showing during the Super Bowl on Sunday (tomorrow). Normally I'd just let this slide because we're seeing the final footage so soon afterwards, but not this. Everyone needs to see this. This is one of those moments where I finally get to say "I told you so!" While this isn't much, and I need to see it clearer, this brief bit of footage definitely looks awesome. I can't wait to see more on Sunday!
The high definition TV spot has debuted online - watch it right here!
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is directed by big action filmmaker Stephen Sommers, of The Jungle Book, Deep Rising, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and Van Helsing previously. The screenplay was co-written by both Stuart Beattie, of Collateral, Derailed, and 30 Days of Night, and Skip Woods, of Swordfish and Hitman. The movie is based on Hasbro's G.I. Joe line of toys that first debut in 1964. Paramount will premiere G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra in theaters everywhere on August 7th, 2009 this summer.

That looks ridiculous! Like an anime. I'm not taking it serious though I'll definitely watch it now from that clip, you don't need to convince me with gritty realism, that's boring, I could go outside in the 'real world' for that.

This is probably the first time where a 12 second video clip has given me an orgasm. That's not related to porn.

I like it. It maybe just your usual summer dumb blockbuster, and fanboys may cry that it's horrible, and how it's a rip off, and how it's not original, and how it's "raping their childhood" or whatever, to me it looks visually impressive and entertaining.

"I told you so" Umm...isn't that a comment that should be reserved until you've actually seen the entire film?
Niko on Jan 31, 2009
I'm with #4 about the comment. And what is that about anyway? This looks like a mix between Wanted and The Matrix. Although I like both of those movies, the mixture of the two isn't a good thing.

Steven Sommers is a pretty good director. The only thing you should worry about is the script... But the Screen writer seems pretty respectable, compared to what he's done in the past (Collateral, 30 days of Night)

ok that was awesome. They may have ripped off: Wanted - Things smashing into moving train in slo mo Matrix Reloaded - Guy jumping on to moving car in slo mo Transformers - Guy side flipping past a rocket in slo mo But i don't care, i'm a fan of outrageous mind numbing physic defying action, and having all those bits in the same film will make me happy!!

looks ok...still too early to judge.
Matt Suhu on Jan 31, 2009
for chris, if they ripped of one movie its a rip off, but if they ripped of those three movies, they are really genius

Ok, i saw some pretty cool stuff in there. I was trying to understand what kind of visuals they were pushing for, but now i'm pretty interested in what they are doing.
Darunia on Jan 31, 2009
Okay...consider me interested. Well, more interested than before. Man, that one shot of Snake Eyes...wow.
James on Jan 31, 2009
This looks fun!!! That's all I'm worried about. As stated from a couple of the posts above, don't take this too seriously and you'll enjoy it (Hopefully), and please don't make another TDK comparison where it needs to be realistic and dark. @ #8, That's exactly what I thought also, especially the Transformers scene...
Omega728 on Jan 31, 2009
It looks like it has a sort of matrix infusion that I'm kinda digging right now...
????? on Jan 31, 2009
it looks just as bad as those Anderson Resident Evil movies.
The Delightful Deviant on Jan 31, 2009
That looks pretty cool, but hopefully that isn't just the best parts (ie. MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR)
Ryan on Jan 31, 2009
I was expecting "Dragonball: Evolution" bad, but it doesnt look that bad. It certainly doesnt looks like a GI: Joe movie, perhaps they could rename it "GI Joe: Evolution"?
Dreckent on Jan 31, 2009
Bubble gum, cotton candy bullshit. Everyone looks perfect, bombs explode and leave just a little scratch on the cheek without messing up their hair. Barf!
Bryanmakeup on Jan 31, 2009
Awesome? As in hot dogs and red and yellow socks?
Boris on Jan 31, 2009
I like Thursday. But maybe because it had Eckhart and Jane in it.

Wow. I might now have another reason for watching the Super Bowl aside from food, beer, and the occasional pummeling.
Jimbo Slims on Jan 31, 2009
K. That's lookin pretty BAD-A!
sumonesumtime on Jan 31, 2009
Not enough to judge but if I did, it looks disappointing. These are people! Not people hacked into some machine or where they can curve bullets and they have them jumping around rockets it looks like and flying throw windows of moving buses. Looks cheesy if anything/. Hopefully time will change that.
Aravena on Jan 31, 2009
Wait !, this is G.I JOE right so isn't it suppose to to look really cheesy and cartoony ? I mean I remember when watching the cartoon their wasn't a shred of realism in it, but you can very well correct me if I'm wrong. Anyways, that footage is incredibly short, but not really bad at all. We still need to see a full trailer, so when we get a good look at it tomorrow when it plays during the Bowl than we can actually judge it to see if it looks like crap or if it's actually decent. Peace Out !

i am looking forward to this it does get too much hate peopel iot is based of action figures and a cheesy sat. morning cartoon i think they are doing the best of what it is based on i think it will be as good as transformers
nelson on Jan 31, 2009
looks like a normal action flick
Cody on Jan 31, 2009
Stormshadow and Snake Eyes better have an epic fight, like the one they had in Valor Vs. Venom!
Cody on Jan 31, 2009
looks totally ridiculous.
dave13 on Jan 31, 2009
Also, #28 is a different Cody than #27! This is more than an action flick for me!
Cody on Jan 31, 2009
Loogs good to me..I'm in.
Bry from Chi on Jan 31, 2009
Were there two versions of that footage? I don't see how anyone could get excited over what I just saw. I will however admit that it actually didn't look as bad as I expected it to.
corran on Jan 31, 2009
that's orgasmic love it can wait till tomorrow to see the full thing.

Okay, I'm a child of the 80's and I refer to GI Joe as one of the high points of my childhood, but I think some people are being overly critical - at least considering that we've only seen less than five seconds of real footage. "Not enough to judge but if I did, it looks disappointing. These are people! Not people hacked into some machine or where they can curve bullets and they have them jumping around rockets it looks like and flying throw windows of moving buses. Looks cheesy if anything/." Seriously? Hey, I respect that you want more out of the franchise, but have you revisited the series lately? For heaven's sake, the opening of the movie depicts an epic aerial battle around the Liberty statue with jetpacks, helicopters, robots, gargantuan flying fortresses, laser rifles, and a patriotic rendering of the classic theme song. It's f*cking badass, but undoubtedly cheesy. Also, the main villain Serpentor? He wears an unlimited supply of cobras around his neck and can use them as spear-like projectiles. I'd say the absurdity of jumping around rockets is about on par with anything I've watched in the series barring GI Joe Extreme.
John on Jan 31, 2009
Damn! That was fast. I'll check the trailer on superbowl anyway.
Fisherr on Jan 31, 2009
that was over very quickly, but looked pretty fucking cool i'm more intrested in this film now.
zetsu on Jan 31, 2009
10 seconds footage make you say "i told you so"? oh alex...
Ricardo on Jan 31, 2009
It actually looks like a fun straight up action flick with the effects looking pretty awesome from the small trailer we got to see.. I cant wait to be honest.
Crazysteve on Jan 31, 2009
Well. The DP of this film has done Wanted and Transformers...no wonder why some say it looks similar. Still, very impressive.
