Indie Trailer Sunday: Marko Zaror Stars in Chilean Film Mandrill
Cooler than Shaft, Hotter than Bond, Faster than Lee! Mandrill is a Chilean action film that I first saw at Fantastic Fest a few months ago (read my review). It's an awesome James Bond-like action movie but made on a shoestring budget with a badass Chilean action star named Marko Zaror. If you've seen Mirageman then you probably know who he is. But if not, this trailer will give you one hell of an introduction. He does all of his own stunts (which you'll see a lot of in the second half of this) and is very entertaining to watch. This trailer comes from our friends at Twitch (via SlashFilm) and includes English subtitles. Check it out!
Watch the trailer for Ernesto Díaz Espinoza's Mandrill:
Completing contracts with ruthless efficiency, Mandrill is always on the lookout for the man who killed his parents when he was a kid. When a contract comes up that looks like it may finally be the man responsible for killing his parents, Mandrill discovers that the only way to get him is through his daughter Dominic.
Mandrill is both written and directed by Chilean filmmaker Ernesto Díaz Espinoza, who wrote and directed Kiltro and Mirageman previously, both of which also starred Marko Zaror. This first premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX. It doesn't have a US distributor yet, but we expect it to hit theaters sometime in 2010.

Kiltro is real cheezy. It's a lot cheezier than a lot of the cheeziest Kung Fu movies. That being said, I still love Kiltro. The 1-hit move he uses to kill 3 guys is awesome, I had to rewind and watch that over and over. Marko Zarar has some really good moves and a distinctively large nose. I wonder if he's good at comedy, he could kill audiences with laughter while he's killing bad guys on the screen with his distinctive trademark style of spinning and flipping kicks. I wish all the Mandril team lots of luck and a big budget some day. With just a little Hollywood juice, these little non-American independent martial arts companies like Baa-Ram-Ewe and Mandril could make the big movies.

This looks like crap but maybe I'm in a bad mood. I agree # 6 the flip was awesome.

Alex knows what he's talking about. It was a BLAST seeing this flick at Fantastic Fest, easily one of the best of the entire festival.

Define "super low budget"... cuz when I think of a super low budget I think of "El Mariachi"... or "Blair Witch". This looks way to flossy to be that cheap. But then again.. if it's shot in HD who knows......

Cool kicks funny shit but maybe too kooky for my serious bones. Some of it doesn't look hyped though.
Johnny Neat on Dec 14, 2009
