Interview: Watchmen's Comedian - Jeffrey Dean Morgan

February 19, 2009

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian

Of all the people involved in Watchmen, the one actor I really wanted to interview was Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays The Comedian. Not only is he a great guy in person (I've met him before), but his character is one of the darkest and most complex in the entire movie. Yesterday afternoon I sat down with him to talk about Watchmen and what it's like being a part of something so incredible. And because we're all very excited about Watchmen, I thought I'd put up my video interview for your viewing pleasure. Be careful, this isn't exactly spoiler free, but it should be a fascinating interview to watch - at least I think so!

For those who haven't read the graphic novel, The Comedian might possibly be the most conflicted character of the story. There is a lot of insight to be gained from this interview after having seen the movie as well, primarily because you'll understand his take on the character so much more. I hope you enjoy!

Watch our interview with Jeffrey Dean Morgan:

Please be patient while loading the video - the file size is huge! Thank you!

The video portion of the interview was shot using my Flip Mino camera. The full transcript will be posted at a future point, I just wanted to get this out there since people have requested to see it. And while I can't yet write about Watchmen, you can hear my thoughts in the video. Let's just say, I wasn't disappointed in the least. As for Jeffrey Dean Morgan, his character kicks ass, and while he is one of the darkest parts of the story, it's extraordinary watching him on screen. Not that anyone needs more reasons to go see Watchmen, but hopefully this chat with Morgan has given you just a small idea of how much work went into it.

Watchmen is directed by Zack Snyder (of Dawn of the Dead and 300) and is written by David Hayter (The Scorpion King, X-Men, X-Men 2) and Alex Tse. The film is an adaptation of Alan Moore's highly acclaimed award winning graphic novel of the same name. Watchmen officially arrives in theaters everywhere on March 6th, 2009. Stay tuned for even more Watchmen coverage, photos, and more here on!

Great interview. I like hearing the actors analysis of their characters. Gives them more substance aside from what we read in the graphic novel. JDM seems like a mellow, humble actor. Can't wait for 3-6-09 ! THE END IS NIGH!

Nick Sears on Feb 19, 2009

It's great to see someone genuinely passionate about what they're doing.

Fuelbot on Feb 19, 2009

even though the 3x clips that were posted all seemed very flat and lifeless, and had 2 of them featuring needless slow mo rubbish, and Ozzy mumbling his way through his lines, i'll still be there on March 6th (day booked off work!) to see the movie with high hopes!

chris on Feb 19, 2009

Ok, first of all THANK YOU for this great interview ! That beeing said, I don't know how many interviews JDM did, or what time of the day (night?) it was but the guy looks soooo tired ! It's almost like he is talking in his spleep 😉 You can see how heavy his eyelids are !! Anyway, can't wait to see the movie too

Norin on Feb 19, 2009

I'm really only familiar with JDM from his work on Supernatural. He has a rare quality, he immediately generates empathy.

RandyG on Feb 19, 2009

Alex Billington on Feb 19, 2009

Nikhil Hariharan on Feb 19, 2009

cracker on Feb 19, 2009

I have such a crush on that man.

Derek on Feb 19, 2009

He was great on Supernatural. I think that he'll be amazing in Watchmen and that the movie will be great. Who watches the watchmen? I do on March 6th!

Bryan on Feb 19, 2009

word to #3...Glad to see someone not doing this profession all just for the money. P.S. JDM smokes weed HAH!

Cody on Feb 19, 2009

Alex and #12, funny how you guys both see the resemblance that JDM and RDJ have. Just this morning my friend asked if i thought Downey Jr. would do a good job of portraying the Comedian. i answered with a chuckle and then my explanation that Morgan is playing Blake. Truth be told, i made the same mistake when the very first trailer was released.

Al on Feb 19, 2009

he looks like a half-breed between brad garret and robert downey jr, but i agree, i'm glad to see that he, along with the other watchmen, are doing not just for the money, but for the fans too

LeeMan on Feb 19, 2009

Yeah, he plays the father on Supernatural. He's got an inferno based introduction in the pilot - pretty bad ass. Thank you thank you thank you for posting this EXCELLENT Interview!! I highly enjoyed this. once again, keep up the good work Alex and!

VIDEO INTERVIEWS? AWESOME. More of these please, way easier to absorb than full text transcripts. I LOVE it. Keep it up FS! On to the interview, loved it, love hearing of the religious adherence to the graphic novel. Can't wait to be in theaters to watch this masterpiece.

Alex, thank you so so much for your amazing interview and for posting the video! I REALLY LOVE IT. THANK YOU!!

celine on Feb 20, 2009

I think he is secretly the long lost twin brother of that guy in "Vicky Christina Barcelona" ..

Tom Dearsley on Feb 22, 2009

Oh i love this. Whenever he mentions Sally Jupiter I die a little bit. I really wanna know his take on Eddie's feelings for Sally. GAH! He just mentioned her!! "gona be alone forever....Stepped over an edge that he cant go back over." Haha i love his comments about the costume and cigars helping to get into character. Love that. haha "Giddy 12 years old getting ready to go trick or treating." LOVE THAT aw, is this the end of the interview?? Damn.
