Jack Ryan

Did you already forget that Chris Pine will be the new Jack Ryan? Because I did. Producer Mace Neufeld spoke this morning at a press conference for Invictus and gave a brief update on the next Jack Ryan project (via ComingSoon and Collider). First, he confirmed that Chris Pine was set to play Ryan, but that they were still waiting for a script and it was still very early on in development. Additionally, this will not be based on one of Tom Clancy's novels, but rather will be an original screenplay written by Adam Koxac (with an earlier draft by Hossein Amini). Neufeld wouldn't talk about the story, but did reveal one little tidbit about the plot.

"We pick him up when he's on Wall Street. But I'm not going to tell you the rest of the story… The Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a water-walker because of his ability to jump ahead to a conclusion. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's why we want to portray him. He's a teacher, he's a historian. He's a linguist and he's really smart."

Jack Ryan is a stock broker? I think they may be shaping this into more of a thriller than an action movie, which is fine by me, but there better at least be some action set pieces. Because no one wants to see Jack Ryan talking on the phone all day long. As for choosing Pine, Neufeld explained that Paramount simply wanted to reboot the franchise. "New management came into Paramount and they said, 'This is a really valuable franchise. Let's try to restart it with a younger actor.' The Chris Pine idea came up and hopefully that's what we'll be doing." So a Jack Ryan movie starring Chris Pine that's set on Wall Street? Are you in?

Damn, I was more looking forward to Clooney getting the part cause there were rumors he wanted the role. I like seeing Pine being cast for something this big though, it really sets in stone that we will be seeing more of him in hollywood in the future and I wish him a fruitful career.

meh. chris pine is cool but not sure why they aren't adapting another clancy novel. although most of them would be difficult to adapt into a movie. "clear and present danger" is still my favorite clancy film with "patriot games" and "hunt for red october" tied for second. "sum of all fears" was unfortunate. affleck was never jack ryan.

Perhaps he would consider playing Bourne if Damon won't do it...

I'm in. Can't wait.

He's not Bourne so don't even go there. Can we see how he does as Jack Ryan first before we anoint him the next Bourne?

jake the snake on Dec 4, 2009

better than affleck

Chris Pine as Jack Ryan? I like it.

Xerxex on Dec 4, 2009

i agree with #2 they should have done something else instead of going with the same jack ryan crap.what about splinter cell, rainbow six, ghost recon? i think any of those would have made better movie adaptions

Spider94 on Dec 4, 2009

well all of the ryan novels are set in the cold war so adapting one would mean a period piece which I'm sure they wish to avoid. Pine will be fine I just want James Earl Jones back!

If they're going Wall Street they're going to a place that wasn't really written about in any of the books anyways, so it's not surprising it won't be based around a book. Sounds like if they're trying to reboot the franchise though, it's best to start all the way at the beginning

Splinter cell movie would be beyond amazing......But you couldnt cast Ironside as Fisher thats what destroys the theory.

love all my multiple posts? lol, sry. but ya, if you read clancy's last post, you should also know that there is a jack ryan jr. which could be reeaallly cool, if harrison ford cameo'd as senior ryan to pines.

wow sry, "clancy's last book"

Jack Ryan did work on Wall street before going to the CIA. It's talked about in the books. It would place the movie time line before Patriot Games and Hunt for Red Octoberrrrr.
