Jackie Earle Haley May Become the New Freddy Krueger

We've heard plenty about Platinum Dunes' reboot of A Nightmare on Elm Street, including how their update on Wes Craven's classic will feature an entirely different version of Freddy that we've never seen, but we still don't have any major casting confirmations. However, the horror hounds at Bloody Disgusting have confirmed today that Oscar nominated actor Jackie Earle Haley is indeed the frontrunner for the role of the villain Freddy Krueger. This casting scoop was first reported by Latino Review in February, but only recently re-confirmed by BD. They say we'll see an official announcement as early as next week.
Additionally, BD is reporting that The Haunting In Connecticut star Kyle Gallner is in final talks to play Quentin, the lead character in the reboot and the very same character that Johnny Depp played in the original. It looks like Platinum Dunes is finally pulling their cast together, which makes sense considering they've got to get this moving so it can actually hit theaters in April of 2010. As for Jackie Earle Haley, who just played Rorschach in Watchmen, he seems like the perfect choice, and one of only a few people who could really fill in for Robert Englund. As was already announced, Samuel Bayer is on board to direct.

He'd nail that role like its nobody's business, but they'll have to do some clever camera work or have the film based in a midget village, considering the guy is what - 5'5''? "YOU'RE LOCKED IN HERE WITH ME!!!"

I think he is the perfect choice for kruger. He looks creppy looking and seems like he could scare people without even trying much. Or, at least i hope.

If they can't get the original I think he'd be the next best pick. I loved him in watchmen btw.

He's short enough to reboot the Leprechaun franchise too. Leprechaun vs. Freddy!

And alot of people said that Jack Nicholson WAS the Joker and look how well Heath Ledger (who I was HIGHLY skeptical of) did. I think that he would be an excellent choice for F.K., I would be excited to see that. I thought he did a magnificent job as Rorschach.

#4 That was also preached about Jack Nicholson as the Joker.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Jackie is better than this! He's worked with Kate Winslet for Chistsakes! I think the "nightmare" series is fucking KITSCH BULLSHIT!!!!

good god, ok #20 im not saying all the ones who played (the character) first were the best, in fact i didnt think Jack Nicholsan played a good joker when i first saw it. #21 im just saying R.E. was a good choice for Freddy and even though they change him we will all remenber him as Freddy.

I'm excited that he'll be playing F.K, but I'm kind of surprised that they didn't just ask R.E. being that he is mostly in cameo's now. Either way good choice. I wonder what they have planned for the reboot. If its just going to be a remake or are they going to go a little further in the past to the beginning.

Nightmare On Elm Street is terrible 80s crap, just like the Friday The 13th series. It's only being dug up because The Movie Industry has run out of ideas, coupled with the whole 'the kids think the 80s are cool so let's find some derivative 80s stuff we can shove down their throats and make lots of money' mentality. I don't know what angers me more, all the 80s rehashes or how HORRIBLE they are being done ala Friday The 13th, Transformers and have you SEEN what G.I. Joe is looking like? Stephen Sommers might have a worse movie to his name other than the horrible Mummy movies and Van Helsing. Go ahead, Google what the Cobra Commander looks like. Now picture him taking on a bunch of generic Joes wearing the same black military suit, a suit that makes them run fast and jump high, so much so that they can cartwheel out of the way of heat-seeking missles in bullet-time. I hate what they've done to my childhood. After Lucas ruined Star Wars and Indiana Jones, and Bay ruined Transformers, all I had left was G.I. Joe. Thank you Stephen Sommers. I only hope I can one day return the favour...

If anyone could do it, he could. It won't be the Freddy of us oldsters, but he might be a great Freddie for the Newbies. Hopefull Michael Bay won't have something explode every five minutes in it One, two, Freddy's coming for you. KA-BOOM! Three, four, better lock your door. KA-BOOM! Five, six, grab your crucifix. KA-BOOM! Seven, eight, better stay awake. KA-BOOM! Nine, ten, never sleep again.KA-BOOM! and they'll keep the Finnish Uwe Bolls, Renny Harlin, away from it this time.

many posts ago I saw you attack with vial intent the new Star Trek, which was pretty amusing, thus the retort on your beloved and sick "hero" Freddy. Then you might change your mind concerning the sequel. I cannot fathom I have to spell it out to you. A Search engine my ass. And we all have seen accusations of fraud. I must concure.

I had a vial? I attacked the new Star Trek? My beloved and sick hero Freddy? Accusations of fraud? Do you have anything to back this up? And yes, when you say feo anything you increase my search engine identity, so thanks again! As for the rest of you reading this, what can I say? When you get popular, you get really weird stalkers like this one. ----------------------------- "I have friends. I don't want them. I got them." - Benjamin Pierce - SCANNERS

Would that be sweet if he got the roll? Wasn't he the guy who went to the Nightmare on Elm street set for a roll, and then lost it to the friend that gave him a ride to the set? That friend being Johnny Depp.

Um, yes you did, when others were debating the colours used in the new Star Trek, I remember as well. And a lighting designer tried to make a good point ( something we learned in school) and he was right. You did attack and you are a mean person.

Well I'm glad YOU remembered, Nut. feohatestheworld was apparently clueless. Now if you'd be so kind, tell the world just what page this is so I can be humiliated properly. Because I still don't remember, and without any evidence, what you say can't be proved.

Robert Englund actually said he wanted to play Freddy again. He said that Freddy is about 40 and he can easily pull off being 40. The reason he wasn't gonna be in it before was because they wanted to make a prequel so they will need someone who looks a bit younger to show the earlier days. Now that they are just remaking "Nightmare n Elm Street" they should have used Robert. This guy won't have the voice he doesnt have the stature and he won't bring the same attitude to the table. Big mistake.

For a fact he'll be a different Freddy. Doesn't follow that he'll be a worse Freddy.
Feo Amante on Apr 26, 2009

wow @24. nightmare was one of the best horrors films of its time and the fact that it introduced everyone to the villian which you really cant escape from was at the time genius. i feel that remake isnt looking to shove 80s down our throats but to invite the next generation to this category of film in a modern way they can really appreciate it in, and if you hate movies that much just stop watching and avoid what you call dissapointment

I am intrigued by this remake cos i saw this actor in watchmen and thought he was very good. I can imagine him in the kruger make up. He has the same jaw line as Robert Englund. Englund will always be the one that made Freddy infamous but lets face it he is getting on a bit and i we need a fresh face.
