Joe Johnston Thinks We Still Might One Day See Jurassic Park 4

Jurassic Park 4

Even though we've heard time and time again that it's going to never happen, director Joe Johnston still believes we will one day see Jurassic Park 4. Back in June, producer Frank Marshall said that another Jurassic Park was a "long shot" and that they "don't have a story." Not according to Johnston. Ain't It Cool News spoke with the director recently and heard otherwise. "Well, there is a great story for the fourth one that I would be interested in getting involved with and it’s nothing like the first three. It sort of takes the franchise off in a completely different direction, which is the only way I would want to get involved."

Johnston continues: "Why would anybody go back to that island? It was hard enough to figure out the second and third reason for them to go, but it would take it off in a whole other trilogy basically, but when it gets to that level it’s sort of about studios and Steven’s thing and who knows. I think we are at that point where we are due for another one if we are going to do it. They had what four years between them? 1992… 1996 or 1997, and then 2001, so we are past due. I don’t know, but we will see."

The last few times we've written about Jurassic Park 4, I've expressed my disdain towards seeing another sequel. Exactly as Johnston said, we don't need to go back to any island again. At this point the franchise has burned itself out and if they make another one it's just going to get worse. I think it's better we don't ever see another sequel. Kind of like the Terminator franchise, it's time we just left it alone and let the legacy live on as it is, no more sequels or reboots or TV shows or anything. I love the original Jurassic Park but don't care for any of the sequels. Although, maybe I am a little curious to hear what the new story is?

One side of me is curious for another movie, the other side doens't want anything to do with it.

What else could they really do with the story though? Dinosaurs let loose on mainland America and running amok?

I'll support this on the condition that we see a T-Rex beat the living hell out of that Spinosaurus. RESTORE THE KING TO HIS PROPER PLACE.

The title of Jurassic Park IV would have been 'Jurassic Park: Extinction'. Sounds cool.

It better not be 3D!

Jurassic Park is one of my favorite movies of all time. The Lost World sucked the big one. The third one is a guilty pleasure of mine. I wouldn't be against a fourth.

Jurassic Park is a pure classic, and I really enjoyed the Lost World as well. But I could easily piss on the reel of Jurassic Park 3 and feel like i'm doing the world a favor. Though it sounds like a terrible idea to make a 4th, there's something about these movies that I just can't get enough of and i'm all for it. I think it's been long enough, technology's better, and people are wise enough to write a smart script. Jurassic Park 3 tanked in the box office so I know they would never make that mistake again. As far as the island, DON'T GO BACK! It's like the sequel's were only made based off of the pure ignorance and stupidity of human kind (which is kind of believable in a sense ;P). But really people I think it's safe to say that we're past due on some carnivorous, human-feeding, dinosaur action.

Why bother taking an established franchise like Jurassic Park in a different direction, when you can jump-start a live-action R-rated TUROK movie instead??

If they do make jurassic park 4 theres i couple thing's id like to see. #1. Bring back the Oringinal Logo with the T-Rex, Not the Spinosaurus.. If it has the Jurassic park name give it the Classic logo.. #2. Call it either Jurassic park ''The Extinction'' or Jurassic park ''Dark Contenant'' Those sound pretty great not just plain out Jurassic park 4 how unoringinal is that. #3. Re-do the Crappy T-Rex vs Spinosaurus battle, use Less CGI and have it as the pure climax of the film with of course the champion being no oither then Tyrannosaurus Rex. #4. Bring Sam Neil, Laura dern, and esp Jeff Goldblum back into the story. #5. No more kids in the story, Enoughs Enough.. Also leave out the Kirbys... They sucked in JP3. #6. Besides the Classic T-Rex, Raptors, also bring back the Spitting Dinosaur from the first film i forgot its name. #7. I personally dont care if Jp4 is the last film or actually going to have another trilogy like like ''Scream, Pirates, Indiana Jones, Spiderman'' Ect... But make the Story/plot good and worth watching. I mean im glad there going in another direction because the search and rescue thing was boring! Kinda curious about this story #8. Finally... Jurassic park 3 was too ''Child Friendly'' if you going to end it or start and entire new direction/trilogy.. Then make it alot darker, alot more action, alot more dinosaur vs dinosaur battles. Something we havent seen before. #9. Keep the animatronic dinosaur's and dont go all ''CGI'' What made the first and second classic's was knowing they were actually there. It also is what makes Jurassic park stand out better then any other dinosaur Film. So please no all CGI dinosaurs. Thats about it... I think with those guide-lines you will have an amazing Jurassic park 4. I say BRING ON THE DINOSAURS!

I'd pay to see another one - just so I can get my dose of awesome Dino CG!! :p I actually wouldn't mind seeing a 3D jp as long as it has a good story to boot - no dino militia as previously reported!!

The first Jurassic Park is the true standard bearer of this franchise; and even though Sir Stevie directed the second one, it was a truly tedious exercise and the third film was even more so. As a single film the first JP has a place, in summer blockbuster lore; but it is not on the same mythology level as the first two Terminator films. James Cameron imbued those with a depth of story that, frankly, is missing, from all of the JP films. While the JP films were true ground breakers for digital effects, (particularly the first one) they dropped the ball a bit, from what Michael Crichton crafted, in novel form. The book had a much more interesting ending than the T-Rex making an "heroic" reappearance. So I don't feel a fourth film can do any significant harm; but that doesn't make it at all necessary either. If they make a fourth one, it'll be a rental, if I see it at all.

I honestly thought Jurassic Park 4 is a movie that writes itself. I was always surprised that they did what they did in Jurassic Park 3 and then never made another one (mostly BECAUSE of Jurassic Park 3, i'm sure). The natural evolution of the story is a no-brainer: Okay, so here you have an huge piece of corporate real estate that's overrun with Dinosaurs. They've tried multiple times to profit from these Dinosaurs, each time they've failed. So naturally what would any logical corporate power do in that situation? They'd try to RECLAIM THE LAND. They still own it, as it is it's a money-pit, so logically they'd try to kill off the dinosaurs, retake the land, and try to turn it into a profit again. That's not just logical plot-progression, that's business sense. So you make the movie not about some small ragtag team of survivors running from Dinosaurs, but make it about a huge military force killing the Dinosaurs off. Just imagine a group of raptors silently stalking a lone man, hunting him down in tall grass, then just before they strike, a huge militia of soldiers gun them down in a hail of gunfire. Make the Raptors sympathetic; they never stood a chance. Then bring in an aging/dying Alan Grant from the first movie, as a Dinosaur expert who reluctantly instructs the soldiers how to find and terminate the more elusive or dangerous species. He's not afraid to get back on the island because he already knows he's dying. Then the whole thing becomes a huge poetic allegory for mortality and death. Of course something goes wrong and yadda yadda yadda, but the point would be a crushing but beautiful tale about the inevitability of death and best using the time we have, while using the format of "dinosaurs" as the perfect thematic analogy. Add in some sub-plot about Malcom and other JP alumni vying for the courts to protect the island as a preserve legally, and it becomes a great swan-song for the entire Jurassic Park franchise.

as long as they dont have raptors with goddamn lasers on their heads, they should kill whoever pushed the idea of dinos carrying guns... and i think i threw this idea out here last time they talked about JP, that it should be Tim grown up and taking over Ingen, and takes the company back into the original island to capture or kill the dinos and get the park back up and running

The story was pretty damn near perfect by the end of the first film. And then they continued...honestly, the second and third are as dreadful as the straight to DVD Disney sequels! Or maybe more like the Land Before Time series? A big yawn over here.

Lindsey on Nov 8, 2009

I'm still afraid it is going to be about some kind of genetics mixing thing with humans and dinosaurs, especially now since they say they're going in a totally different direction. It'll have nothing to with JP so they should run it under something else and ruin a whole new franchise.

Please God NO!!! Tell me this isn't true! I loved the first one, the second was ok and the third one ruined it for me. This is just another piece of evidence to me that Hollywood is running out of ideas.

It's just tough. The reason the first one was good (like all originals) is seeing it for the first time. The first ripple of the water in the glass, the first time we see T-Rex, the back story is explained, etc. There was nothing surprising or intriguing that the sequels (like most sequels) could offer. We saw all the creatures, knew Goldblum, and 2 and 3 were just a re-packaging. I think the story would have to be REALLY good to light a 4th one. Also, I liked where they were going with Terminator. We were FINALLY in the war. Isn't that what everybody was waiting for? Yes, it was less than great, but you can't fault them for taking it in a new, exciting direction.

Only thing they need to do to make the fourth one badass is to strap lasers on the backs and heads of the dinosaurs just like my favortie 80's cartton growing up, Dino-Riders! Fuck yeah! As a matter of fact, just make a fucking Dino-Riders movie!

Cmurder on Nov 9, 2009

Did they actually address the impact of the Dinosaurs on the rest of the world? Surely they could go off of something like that, and have the military trying to clear them up for good?
