Latest Venom Draft Turned In, Sony Still Moving Forward

September 25, 2009
Source: SciFi Wire

Way back in July of last year, Sony announced that they were officially moving forward on a Venom spin-off. But like Fox, just because they're "moving forward" doesn't mean it will ever actually happen. We last heard in April that they had worked on a draft but really couldn't talk about it. SciFi Wire now has an update from writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick that, "we've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward." Not exactly a huge update, but still an update, in a good way I suppose. But will Sony ever decide to make it? And who will they get to direct?

SciFi Wire next asked when they think it might go into production. But their answer to that was even more vague. "We're not sure, [but] we've turned in our two drafts," said Wernick. As writers of a huge comic book movie, they don't really have too much control. "Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what's the next step." At least this doesn't mean the project is being scrapped or shelved, for the time being, but with Spider-Man 4 actually moving forward for 2011, I don't know if Sony will also want a competing Venom project on their slate as well (or can even afford it).

This Venom project has kind of been in limbo ever since it was first announced more than a year ago. My hope is that Sony one day confirms a director and we can start pressing them for more information instead of the writers. Because at this point they don't have much more they can (or are allowed to) tell us besides that it's written and in the studio's hands. We'll let you know if we ever hear anything else! Thoughts?

Not every marvel character movie is going to be as good as "Spiderman 2" or "Ironman". I have high hopes for "Spiderman 4", "Ironman 2" & "Deadpool". But we have to be realistic...

i agree with #4,we have had some good marvel movies in the past and some bad ones you would love to forgot.spiderman 4- i dont have high hopes yet because of what they did in sm3 and how they made venom look like crap and this new goblin bullshit.A good villian for sm4 will be lizard and or the jackal.the venom movie looks good for a carnage fight only if they make it rated r; and we all know its never gonna happen.ever.

This could potentially be good if they ever get around to making it. But if they ever do, I really hope they change Venom's appearance. I mean in the comics and tv show he was buff, and a straight monstrosity, but in sm3 he was puny compared to the original sources. And i'm sure they can find a good buff actor to play him, they just refuse to.

I have mixed feelings about this. I agree with #6, Venom was far too puny in SM3, however, if they do Venom right (like the Deadpool movie is supposed to do for Deadpool) this could be very entertaining. I also agree with #5, this would be a perfect opportunity to use Carnage, and no, it will never be rated R. Only Marvel character that gets that rating is The Punisher. What I fear, however, is the studio deciding to give Topher Grace another shot at being Eddie Brock, which was a terrible terrible idea to begin with. The first image on the top right is what, I believe, everyone thinks Eddie Brock should look like. NOT like a slightly taller Peter Parker.

Marvel can go to hell. They should take their friend bungie with them.

The next spidey film should be based on Maximum Carnage, too bad Raimi isn't a fan of it. Furthermore, why does everyone say a good Spiderman, Venom, and Carnage film would have to be R? That's simply not true by today's standards.

#9 It doesn't have to be R, but it would be better that way. What would be better is if they never made it at all

Sony needs to sell the rights to marvel or it will suck.

A villain spin-off seems to defeat the purpose of the villain in the first place, the interaction with the hero. But, if Sony proves it can get Spider-Man 4 to actually be good then I'll have a bit of hope for this.

This movie will star some other bigger named young actor who will play some character that has bad luck and inner turmoil. They will then come in contact with the symbiote bonding them with their hatred and wreak havoc on the city. Seeing the error in their ways, they will fight the evil and eventually turn the symbiote into a semi-goodie helping others, insert spidey cameo. I puke, the end.

Are they going to ruin Venom even more like the comics did by making him some kind of tortured anti-hero instead of a full-on villain?

i'm up for a muti x-over event anyone else(like what they are doing iron man, thor & captain america they lead into the avengers).......DEADPOOL VS VENOM.

well guys as always you are shooting with blanks ... venom has only issues with and the hots for good old spidey as revealed in his own limited series and shown thru each and every issue he has shown his hideous slimey tongue he has a wicked sense of honor. and avoids to harm innocents. hence his hatred almost as thick as his hatred for Cletus Cassady aka Carnage 😀 anyways, i dont have any high hopes for this flick, since the spiderman franchise has let me down big time (because the spidey the one i love has webshooters, showing he is also a scientific genious almost amongst the ranks of reed richards, hank pym etc showing the kids/giving the message "hey look being good at science at high school is not lame and dull and nerdy") i am very wary with new projects that are bearing spideys name and or his emenies etc... i will see it when it hits the theatres and even buy the bluray for my collection but i dont think i will be cheerin' "yay" 😀 lets wait and see and pray they prove me wrong 😀
