Guillermo del Toro and Mike Mignola

Not surprising to hear, considering Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is credited for the story on Hellboy II: The Golden Army and did work closely with Guillermo del Toro on both of those movies, but it is exciting nonetheless. Collider talked with Mignola on the red carpet of the Saturn Awards last week and got a small tidbit out of him about The Hobbit. "I actually did go down to New Zealand for just about a week and a half, really… It was really quick, and I did a little bit of work on The Hobbit." What exactly did he do? He wouldn't say, but our guess is he worked on some of the early concept art drawings, as he's also an artist.

So what can we expect from this Guillermo del Toro and Mike Mignola team up briefly for The Hobbit?

"It's hard to say at this point, because so much work had been done before I even got there that I looked at it and I [said] wow, it looks like a 16 hour, insane movie, there's so much in it. It's too early for me to tell how much stuff is going to get paired down. I don't really feel comfortable saying too much, except that it looks amazing. And it's very much a del Toro stamp on that world."

So there's the first response from someone who has been down to New Zealand and seen first hand exactly what del Toro's version of The Hobbit looks like so far. Mike Mignola is a good guy and I trust him. If you're not sure about this, just watch the interview video on Collider, and you can tell that he wouldn't just hype things up without good reason. For those who are dying for more updates on The Hobbit, word is that there might be some big announcements coming during Comic-Con. I mean, we already know that Peter Jackson himself will be there, so maybe he'll be hosting a Hobbit panel as well. As always, stay tuned for the latest!

Wow, Peter Jackson coming to San Diego.... seems surreal lol. Then again, Comic Con is not like it was in the past. I think it should keep true to the original title but I belive its more Pop/Modern Culture Convention. A la movies, comics, anime, card-board-video games, cosplay etc etc.

i dont want a del toro stamp on the movie, i want him to just take whats there and make a hobbit movie, most of its already done for the LOTR movies just stick with that style dont go with the colorful crappy hellboy style or the movies ruined before it begins

Harrison -- I absolutely agree. del toro's studio movies are garbage -- look and storyline -- and I want him to bring in his Pan's Labyrinth/Devil's Backbone ethos, not cartoon Hellboy qualities. Fingers crossed.

I love Del Toro, but also loved the Peter Jackson films too, so it'll be a weird one, I don't want it to be wildly different, but I think they both have similar sensibilities, I'll be there for it opening no matter what.

I agree with #2, #3, and #4. No Hellboy type creatures but I wouldn't be opposed to Pan's Labyrinth type creatures.

I agree with #2, #3, #4, and #6. If i see a creature with eyes on his hands in the hobbit i will walk out.

I wonder if Toro/Jackson will put together a video diary for the movie eventually much like Jackson did for King Kong. Following those videos was great!!

You guys are such stupid knit-pickers. The Hellboy movies arent the greatest thing in the world but the creatures still look great. #2 : Nothing you wrote makes any sense, Hellboy isnt colorful. Why do you think Jackson chose him anyway? BECAUSE HE WANTS THE DEL TORO STAMP. He won't direct any more movies, he wants someone who can, Del Toro. And he knows a lot better than a buncha whiney baby blogger shire sniffers. #7 : Everyone who you said you agreed with said they wanted it similar to Pans, so what are you talking about? He's not going to put a character from another movie into the hobbit, so stop searching for a reason not to like something that doesnt come out for 5 yrs. Peter Jackson is so over rated. Poor Petey is so worn out after doing the 3 lotr movies like 10 yrs ago he can only produce stuff now. What a baby. There I said it, that'll give you jerks a lot to bitch about for awhile eh? P.S. I heard the second installment of The Hobbit will mainly focus on allegations of Gandolf molesting Bilbo on their long journeys.

Oh yeah, I forgot about King Kong. I guess I stand corrected, that was a real gem. My favorite part was when I fell asleep during the dinosaur fight for a half an hour and woke up in time to see 15 more mins of giant monkeys and dinosaurs rolling around and falling off stuff. That was great.

I agree with #2. Just make it feel like LOTR. The last thing I want to experience again is ANOTHER phantom menace. ...You all know what I mean. Keep it simple Toro!
