Mike Newell in Talks to Direct Disney's The Lone Ranger?
Some news on Disney's The Lone Ranger, finally! The last time we heard anything about this was last year at a big Disney presentation in Hollywood. There they announced that not only would Johnny Depp be back to play Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 4, but that Depp would also play Tonto in the upcoming Lone Ranger movie. But since then, we haven't heard a peep. Well, according to a Twitter update from Production Weekly, Mike Newell is "in talks" to take the reigns of Lone Ranger. Newell, who previously directed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is currently finishing Prince of Persia for Disney.
There's not much else we currently know about Disney's version of The Lone Ranger, except that the script was written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies previously) and it's being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (so expect something quite big). I've been anxious to get a glimpse of Prince of Persia, because that'll be the determining factor on if I continue to think of him as a great director. I think he's done a fairly good job so far with a few movies, and I liked Goblet of Fire, but he needs to show that he can kick ass with a video game movie to really impress me. Anyone excited for Lone Ranger?
I think I would rather want to see Johnny Depp play The Lone Ranger then Tonto. I like the fact that they got The Pirates of the Caribbean screenwriters in on this!

If they are remaking The Lone Ranger they have to take it seriously to make it work. (As they should have done with Thunderbirds!!) As a child of the 50s I was brought up on The Lone Ranger and The Range Rider (Jock Mahoney if anyone else remembers). If I remember rightly the Lone Ranger was in fact a Texas Ranger who was barely left alive when the rest of his posse were gunned town. Johnny Depp is a great actor but certainly not as the Lone Ranger. Hugh Jackman type I think. Good luck with it whoever brings it to the screen

If Depp is going to be Tonto, I think it's really going to be difficult casting the Lone Ranger... it's hard seeing how the dynamic will be between the two characters and not have Depp stealing the spotlight or taking away a focus from what is (and should be) the main character - The Lone Ranger. That said, I'd really like to see George Clooney in the title role, or even visually, Josh Brolin (thought that's unlikely given his upcoming stint as Jonah Hex).
