More DC Comics Movies on the Horizon: Flash, Bizarro, Aquaman
by Alex Billington
July 20, 2009
"A year after The Dark Knight became a worldwide phenomenon, there are more DC Comics adaptations in the works than at any other point since the company was acquired by Warner Bros. in 1969." Really? All that I keep hearing about are Marvel movies! Of course, we know about Green Lantern, The Losers, and Jonah Hex, but what else is there? Thankfully, the Hollywood Reporter has published a article looking at all of the DC Comics movies in the works and a bit of news about hiring on a few DC writers as consultants. It looks like DC might finally be setting up their game to compete with the ever-growing Marvel Studios.
Warner Bros has been changing the way they work with DC Comics over the last year. One part of that reorganization involved secretly hiring three of DC's biggest comic book writers - Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison and Marv Wolfman - to act as consultants and writers for its superhero movies in the works. Johns, known best for his work on the on-going Green Lantern comics, has been working on a new version of a Flash script, that was first written by Dan Mazeau. Johns will also produce, but no director has been hired yet for that. The projects Morrison and Wolfman have been working on haven't been revealed yet.
Here is a better look at exactly how these writers are involved, as they're not just sitting on the sidelines.
The process involves one writer taking point, though the trio do collaborate on projects, reading one another's materials while hashing out a story that will be at once accessible to nonfans yet still adhere to each character's long history. The writers also work in tandem with producers, writers and the Warners execs overseeing the projects, showing them treatments and providing notes on scripts.
"The creative process is by and large a true partnership," DC's Gregory Noveck said. "They'll ask us a ton of questions, and we'll give a ton of answers. We will talk back and forth. We'll discuss writers and talent, but ultimately it's their decision." Other DC projects that they're developing include Aquaman and Adam Strange. Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way is developing the Aquaman movie, however, Warner Bros is still hearing pitches those two. There is also a Constantine sequel still in the works, a few Green Arrow projects like Super Max, and the Shazam movie that director Pete Segal has been attached to for a while.
There is also a Bizarro Superman movie being written by David Howard and Robert Gordon, the two who last brought us Galaxy Quest. Bizarro is a supervillain with similar powers to Superman. He resides in his own Bizarro World, where he's a superhero, not a villain. It sounds like they're going for the comedic version of Superman with Bizarro, but it's too early to tell. The other DC character most may not recognize is Adam Strange, a sci-fi jetpack superhero with similarities to John Carter of Mars. Adam is transported to a mysterious planet named Rann where he fights the aliens and falls in love with a local woman there.
So, all you DC Comics fans, which of these sound good? Of course, who knows which one will see the light of day first, but I've got to say, I'm looking forward to Green Lantern the most at the moment. However, a new Flash written by Geoff Johns sounds pretty awesome, too. So what DC movies are you excited to see?

how can they possibly make an aqua man movie without it being cheesy lol
nelson on Jul 19, 2009
Aquaman could be totally badass! Superman/Bizarro could be really awesome, too. They have such a large universe of characters with Superman, they need to take him off world. Make it a Harry Potter style thing where it's a long arching series of film centered on one main narrative thread. Or do a trilogy of Doomsday, Reign of Supermen and Return of Superman. That would be really sick. That could work like Marvel's "Avengers" film.
LINKFX on Jul 19, 2009
They'd have to get really creative with Aquaman and how they handle underwater scenes. They'd either be really cool or really lame, I don't think there's a middle ground there. I like the Bizarro idea, And Green Arrow is the shit, but I think they're making the same mistake(?) that Marvel is. Where're all the girl superheroes? DC especially has some of the best heroines in comics that definitely deserve bigscreen adaptations: Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Hawkgirl, Batwoman, Power Girl and all them would all make decent flicks. If Chris Nolan makes a sequel to the Dark Night it should have Catwoman in it at least. Rachel Dawes should never have existed. To conclude my rant, why does the comic-to-film industry have to be such a sausagefest?

I also can't wait for Fathom, even though it's not DC, by the way, visit my blog, I've got some good film reviews!

I'm big on seeing Green Lantern... There is so much that can be done especially with all of the diff. Green Lantern characters. I easily see at least 3 movies based on the whole Green Lantern universe / story lines. But the bottom line is that they need to get the Justice League movie together... We have movies for X-Men, Watchmen, Fantastic 4 and soon the Avengers. But we can't get at least one Justice League movie together?? I guess I'll just watch my DVDs of Justice League until the ball gets rolling.

I am looking forward to the green lantern and i think they need to get the woud love to see them both on the big screen Green Lantern and the Flash are Comic books and they are Caraters they can sell to people.

Flash should be next in line after Green Lantern... it's just the logical choice. This news is pretty much the same ol crap we've been getting for the past few years now. WB is developing other DC properties yet nothing comes out of them. The last time we heard news like this was almost a year ago when word was that WB was going to form a seperate division for DC movie properties and Jim Lee was in involved. What came out of it? We're still in the same spot that we were last year.

DC you idiots...how about focusing on making a decent Superman movie before messing with god damn Bizzarro

^I know right? Adam Strange!?! Seriously? Sounds like they want to gear up for a JL movie. I know they're all in competition now, but they should wait for Avengers and see if that fails. I wonder about Marvel and it's future right now.

I'm a Marvel fan, but even I know of Geoff Johns work. its good stuff. I'm impressed that they have him on board working on this. also, James Cameron directing Aquaman could actually be badass. Or at least beautiful to watch.

The lack of any mention of Wonder Woman upsets me, and still tells me how disconnected WB movies still is from DC comics. A Wonder Woman movie should be on the top of their lists. And I honestly have no faith in any of these movies when they can't even pull together a decent Superman movie; arguably DC's most iconic character and figurehead. A Superman movie really shouldn't be that hard to do, there's a immense wealth of previous examples of Superman in film and television, let alone the comics. You're telling me they can't scrape together ONE good movie idea?
DRM on Jul 20, 2009
Bizarro Superman will never happen it sounds like it will be an animated movie instead of live action The Flash and Green Arrow is most likely the next movie but how comes Wonder Woman is not mention WB/DC should try and make a cool epic Wonder Woman movie. the biggest issue that WB/DC should be worried about is if Legendary Pictures is still going to work with them cause they made WB foucs on making superhero movies work on screen. Legendary Pictures contract with WB expires in 2010. WB needs to renew the contract with Legendary Pictures so we can see more cool superhero films.

Now dat Reynolds is playin GL who can they get to play da Flash?.....and @20 Flash is more than just about runnin really really fast!
ayindi on Jul 20, 2009
what up people, I'm glad to see this article, hopefully WB/DC actually get the ball moving......before I reply to comments posted already.....I would assume, Flash will follow GL so the question, shit who can be Flash since I would had prefer to see Reynolds as Flash rather then GL.......Perhaps when Flash is made they should do Green Arrow (perhaps throw in AM at the same time) all during the same time frame so the momentum can continue with the following year being 2012 (give or take) which then can be hold 3rd/Batman, WW, SM movies with a JLA in 2013.....wouldn't that be nice or the IDEAL way to go about!!!! BUT I do still strongly believe this crossover ideal will break or make the thought of Nolan continue on with the 3rd installment....any opinions? Now the 2 ideas that should at least be put on hold is Adam Strange and Bizarro, making a film revolving a bad guy is very risky IMO some how I think it will only work if it ties into a SM flick #5 Da Man - I agree they should throw in some girls but I think the only that can hold her own weight would be WW as her own stand in movie....IMO they should throw in Hawkgirl in the GL some type of appearance and Black Canary in Green Arrow movie #7 Nelson - Justin Hartley is who you speak off but since the pilot of AM wasn't picked they moved him to play the role of Green Lantern.....Which I'm sounding a little bias but I think he can do the GL on the big screen #10 Teyhtr - I agree on what should follow GL and about this same type of article came out a few months back but hopefully patience is the way one last comment, DC/WB please get SM off the ground again and please put it back to respectability among heroes.....(even though Supe Returns was okkkkkkkk, watchable but a big let down)

Bizarro doesn't rate a whole movie, but he could make a cool appearance in another Superman movie. The original Bizarro, who was in Superboy comics, was a tragic character. That might be a better way to go with him in the context of a new Superman movie. Aquaman-maybe he can fight POTC. I mean, I like the character, but I just don't think a whole movie about an underwater guy will get TDN or Iron Man box office; maybe, they can do something strange with the Bermuda Triangle or some kind of Lovecraft Cthulhu-type oceanic horror to increase interest. Adam Strange-He's another cool character, but to the general public (as opposed to DC fans, like me--Marvel too. It's possible to like both, you know.), he'll just be another spaceman, not particularly DC-identified nor really a "brand" like the suits are willing to invest in. Justice League movie-you don't really need an entire (possible flop) movie about each member to "introduce" them. Everybody already knows S, B and WW. Many remember the Flash from his TV show and soon they'll know GL. For the "secondary" characters, just do a 7-10 minute origin/early adventure segment. That'll be enough. Remember, X-Men, FF (which were NOT flops) were "introduced" as teams and that worked. So were Watchmen for that matter, but the box office problems for that amazing film didn't have to do with the team's "introduction." Prediction: Marvel will never get all those individual Avenger movies made. I would like to see the team movie before the current superhero cycle burns out, but it's already smoldering.

If Geoff Johns has even a little control over the Flash movie, and an even slightly talented director gets attached to it, it will be the greatest film the world has or will ever see.

James Cameron and Adrian Grenier for Aquaman, that one little scene they showed in the episode of entourage was straight up badass!

#32 Flimkid - you are 100% correct, my bad I was thinking Green Arrow but my fingers were writing Green Lantern lol anyway regarding all these ideas and possibilities, only time will tell........regarding comic movies being burnt out nah, I don't foresee that happening....yea studios might mess up a few and they get flops for the mess up's but then that only allows for (ex. MARVEL) to take per say Spiderman or XMen (which it should be that way anyway) but that's a whole other story

They need to update or reboot Superman! I mean what an Icon to not have any good live action movies done of him since the original Christopher Reeves movies (I only include the first 2 in this because I think the 3rd and 4th sucked) and maybe the Brandon Routh flick.
Yaten24 on Jul 20, 2009
Shhh, Vinnie can't make Aquaman. He'll be busy making Gatsby with Scorsese in 2010. =P
SuicidalOptimist on Jul 20, 2009
I'm with #26. Just do another Superman film. What the hell are Warner Bros thinking!! Do they honestly think a Bizarro movie is the way to go. If they are going to do anthing with Bizarro, it should be in a Superman flick. What's next General Zod The Movie or maybe Lex Luthor The Movie. They have got some real morons working at Warner Bros.
Last Son on Jul 20, 2009
I hope this news will come to reality someday. Coz, they were hyping about a wonder woman film but never came into production. There was a news also about a suicide squad and teen titans movie they were planning to develop. I don't know what happen but until now, there's no updates about it. Suicide Squad is what I'm anticipating the most after green lantern and flash movie. Hope also they will develop a Krypton Origin movie, a world before superman.

I think it's great that they are working on their lesser-known properties as well as their more iconic ones. I really hope The Flash gets moving soon and WB starts planning for their Justice League movie. On another point, I'd love to see a Spectre movie and a Deadman movie.

like watchmen wasn't bad enough, now they're bringing in Jonah Hex, and talking about adam strange and aquaman??? what the hell... if DC could keep their story lines in the comics straight, we probably wouldn't have something as bad as Superman Returns hitting the shelves, but come on... a Superman reboot would be nice, but there's been talk of making it show the "darker side" of superman, so if they''re seriously thinking about THAT, i'll pass on it too... i do however like that idea of the doomsday/reign of supermen/return of superman trilogy. *crosses fingers*

I agree with whoever it was who said that there could be more than one Green Lantern movie. I would recommend one movie each for the sane Earth Green Lanterns. Guy Gardner is nuts. So, I'm talking about Hal Jordan, Kyle Raynor, and Jon Stewart. I would see a movie with two of them. Adding Brandon Routh's Superman to a movie with two Lanterns would too crowded. Those are my opinions.
