Must Watch: Beautiful Trailer for Chow Yun-Fat's Confucius

Source: Quiet Earth
Well this was unexpected. Quiet Earth has discovered the very first trailer for Confucius, the Chinese government developed biopic starring Chow Yun-Fat as the iconic philosopher. I wasn't expecting this to look as phenomenal as it does. Maybe I'm just being sucked into the visuals and the emotion and the ancient Chinese setting, but I just think it looks amazing so far. It's a full 3-minute trailer without any dialogue, only some beautiful music, but it's definitely worth watching. I don't know who did the score that's in this trailer, or where it's from, but it's exceptional. I can't wait to see this, whenever it makes its way over to America!
Watch the first Chinese trailer for Confucius:
The life story of the highly-influential Chinese thinker and philosopher, Confucius, who lived from 551 BC to 479 BC during the Zhou Dynasty in China. His teachings have deeply influenced life in most of Asia.
Confucius was directed by Chinese filmmaker Hu Mei, of Army Nurse, Far from War, and For All Eternity previously, with a budget of $2.8 million, which converts to roughly $22 million in Hong Kong dollars. It was shot earlier this year and will screen this month in China to mark the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and Confucius' 2,560th birthday. It does not currently have a US distributor. Stay tuned!

Such a magnificent culture. For some reason, I'm glad they didn't use VO. Looks good.

Just some additional information: this is the official trailer which was released to complete the filming. It was during a press conference in Beijing on September 2. (Here's a video of the press conference with the whole cast and director. It's fully in Mandarin though... http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTE2NjA0MzMy.html) The score is by: Zhao Jiping. A famous Chinese composer of movie soundtracks who also did many of Zhang Yimou's movies (Like 'raise the red lantarn' and 'Farewell to my concubine'). And the budget is US$ 22 million. Not HK dollars (it is not a HK movie). They wouldn't be able to make it this epic-looking with a measly 2.8 million.

I was wondering about the score, wasn't too sure if Yo-Yo Ma was scoring it. Zhao Jiping has a very similar sound.

awesome music there. What do Jesus and Confucius have in common? People have used their teaching to support intolerance and oppression. He's like Jesus of East Asia.

Looks interesting, i wonder if the plot has enough hold for an entire film. Still, looks great. Oh and Confucious actually said: Do not burn bridges over which you intend to walk.

Such an anticlimatic tralier. They could have done it in just half the time. 3:00 min? Seriously? It felt like 3 hours already. Don't get me wrong. The movie will probably be good, but, common with this trailer. Agreed with #10!

Even if this movie were to lack plot and story, it would still be a visual feast. Epic is actually a good word.

I think like a lot of chinese cinema in this style, visually it's great to look at, but once you get past that it drags on. That trailer was so random too, just jumped from young Fu to old Fu all the time.

Confucius' life story was extremely interesting and well documented, even more so than the life of Christ. He was a noble statesmen who revolutionized Eastern(and Western)philosophy...so much of Justice, fair law and ethics are based on his teachings...he also ran into many conflict in his life...I could see this being a really great film, although I hope they humanize the man and don't turn him into some God-like character. Being that many Chinese actually do deify the man and still celebrate his descendants as royalty I can see this as potentially being heavy handed and melodramatic...Confucius was only just a man...seperate the myth and the teaching from the man and just show the man, and that will be a good watch. That being said, at least it will look great.

Trailer showed a lot of stuff, but only linked them together (barely) with a randomly aged Confooshuz. Music was nice, but in all honesty, the Jesus angle can be seen a bit too clearly and I don't like that. Don't swallow this propaganda. you'll just be hungry again in an hour. FYE: Confooshuz say, "he who eat jelly bean, fart in technicolor!" and "He who stand on toilet, high on pot!" and "He who lives in glass house dress in basement"

At least it isn't another superhero movie....or is it? 😉 Actually it looks fantastic and the music used in that trailer is brilliant. Here's to hoping this doesn't become another Red Cliff - as in unreleased in the USA. Since there's no vampires, caped do-gooders, mutants, aliens, teeny-boppers, axe-murderers, or explosive experts in it, I doubt any US distributer will have the guts to pick it up.
