Must Watch: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Trailer
by Alex Billington
March 18, 2009
Sony Pictures has debuted the first full trailer for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, their newest animated movie and follow-up to Surf's Up from a few years ago. This is based on a children's book of the same name and is about Flint Lockwood, an inventor, who tries to solve the world hunger problem and invents the ability to turn water into food, causing it to rain food all day long. Although the plot is different, one could make a comparison to Disney's Meet the Robinsons, but I think this looks better. I'm not sure why, but it just looks entertaining, and I love a good animated movie as much as the next person.

Columbia Pictures' and Sony Pictures Animation's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs will be the most delicious event since macaroni met cheese. Inspired by Judi and Ron Barrett's beloved children's book, the film focuses on a town where food falls from the sky like rain.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is co-directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the creators of the TV cartoon "Clone High". The screenplay was also co-written by both Lord and Miller and is based on Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett's book of the same name. Sony Pictures Animation is animating the film and will debut Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in theaters everywhere on September 18th later this year.

Stream of consciousness thoughts: good, good, this looks pretty good. (Food enters the picture.) Gross, stupid. Wow. Not seeing this.

The book was awesome. I was in first grade some 21 yrs ago when my teacher read it. looks like an okay adaptation. I hope they captured some of what made the book so great.

I see they kept some of the best scenes like the mountain of jello and I'm sure a few more but with the plot change I'm not going to see this now. I was really excited too. I really liked Meet the Robinson's...it may take a few more trailers, and my g/f, to convince me.

I'm laughing, and I'm not sure if it's because this film looks ridiculous or good. It's too early to tell.

This looks horrible. Just horrible. This is the type of movie that will ruin childhoods because of how badly it butchers the book and story. This should not be a computer animated movie, first off. That right there ruined it completely. Tim Burton really should've been the one doing this. Such a shame. Such a shame.

oh, and also... I REMEMBER READING THAT BOOK IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL!! haha ๐ the animation is super super cutesy. it's cool, but maybe it's too cutesy sometimes i think that this movie could be pretty good. I know that people are saying this is ruining the book, well, yeah I can kinda feel what they're saying. But this movie seems so different (though i can't remember the book too well... and it was short), that I don't think I relate them AS much. But of course, the connection is still there.

Man, I remember reading this book at least 8 times a week as a kid because the visual art was (still) amazing! After watching this trailer, all my hopes for this movie was shot down. I guess they had to beef up a 24 page kidโs book to last at least an hour. I want to see some steamed spinach fall from the sky!

Why are they doing this! Why didn't they just call it food town and leave the book's title out of it since they left out the book's charm and story and art? Saying this is based on the book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is like saying Finding Nemo was based on Moby Dick. Did the people who wrote this script even look at the book before hand? The movie might be good, but not as a film of the book.

Looks awesome and different from the book. I'll be seeing this with my kids. The style looks much different from the book but still very cute and appealing. Really excited I think my kids will love this.

This is another very typical attempt by the Holly-tards to commercialize a classic, and failing miserably. Should have let Tim Burton (agree with Jonathan) direct this one, ala Coraline. It is a classic story, and has been in my personal book collection for the past 25 years. What a slap in the face to Judi and Ron Barrett, as well as the people who have been reading the story for all these years. I have to wonder if the authors either washed their hands of the Sony version or were just total sell-outs. (?) Anyone have a comment about this or know why the movie is this underwhelming?? I am boycotting the movie and spreading the word for friends to do the same. It's a total hack-job and a disappointment that they followed very little of the original, wonderfully written and illustrated story. Nice comeback, Sony. Your characters are very Japanimation for a very American story. Annoying at best. Go back to what you do best. Dormancy.
