The Sorcerer's Apprentice Trailer

Disney has debuted the first official trailer for The Sorcerer's Apprentice on Apple. This new action-adventure movie stars Nicolas Cage as the Sorcerer Balthazar Blake, Jay Baruchel as his Apprentice, Monica Bellucci, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer, and Toby Kebbell. The Sorcerer's Apprentice is Disney's other big summer movie in addition to Prince of Persia. I loved Enchanted and I've been crossing my fingers hoping this would have as much Disney magic as that movie did. It definitely looks nothing like that, much darker and intense, but the visuals look amazing. You'll be surprised and I'm pretty frickin' excited to see this now!

A sorcerer (Nicolas Cage) leaves his workshop in the hands of his apprentice (Jay Baruchel), who gets into trouble when the broomstick he put a spell on to do chores for him somehow develops a mind of its own.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is directed by veteran filmmaker Jon Turteltaub, who also directed 3 Ninjas, Cool Runnings, The Kid, and both National Treasure movies previously. The screenplay was co-written by Carlo Bernard (The Uninvited) and Matt Lopez (Bedtime Stories). This is based on the story that first appeared in Disney's Fantasia. The Sorcerer's Apprentice hits theaters everywhere on July 16th, 2010 next summer.

Sweet! Doesn't look that bad at all! Alfred Molino looks like he will make a great 'Evil' Sorcerer.... Mean, with just a touch of camp... looking forward to this now.

I read the title and thought you already showed this. But I just mistook this for Season of the Witch. Now I'll watch the trailer...

dennis on Dec 9, 2009

Some of the effects I just saw were pretty awesome, I'll see it

Duck on Dec 9, 2009

Wow, what other beautiful, subtle classics can Disney rape and destroy? How can people hate all the reboots and retellings and not hate this mind numbing shit?

Mark on Dec 9, 2009

i need to be seriously smashed for this one hope the effects match my trip when i see it 😛

Madnezz344 on Dec 9, 2009

WTF??? no Monica Bellucci?

dex on Dec 9, 2009

I'm impressed. This looks amazing. I'm not sure how i'll feel about this during the actual movie but i appreciate the shot at 2:31 with the brooms. I'm totally down for seeing this.

Jesse Gouldsbury on Dec 9, 2009

cage finally making better movie decisions? lol at least disney is trying to make his recent career not look completely retarded

lego on Dec 9, 2009

Although I loathe Cage as an actor, it looks like it could be fun.

N on Dec 9, 2009

You're excited to see this? What is the world coming too. Its Nic Cage for crying out loud. He's as absurd as this flick looks.

BAH on Dec 9, 2009

Shut up #10. Shut right up.

Shane on Dec 9, 2009

yea, #10..........shut up. that kind of comment is lame. as far as the movie goes: yes, the visuals are stunning; but, what little dialogue the trailer has doesn't seem very good to me. hopefully the story, dialogue, and acting will match the visuals. i'm cautiously optimistic on this one.

beavis on Dec 9, 2009

Nic cage kinda looks like brandon lee in this from the crow, also nic cage has totally redeemed himself in my eyes just from watching his new movie port of call , bad lieutenant. its an awesome movie. but yea this movie looks kinda like push with sub new stuff. music doesnt quit fit imo

Vincent Cipollone on Dec 9, 2009

"A sorcerer (Nicolas Cage) leaves his workshop in the hands of his apprentice (Jay Baruchel), who gets into trouble when the broomstick he put a spell on to do chores for him somehow develops a mind of its own." Hmm really?

Pebbles on Dec 9, 2009

@14: Yeah, that description doesn't match the trailer at all. "A limo driver (Cusack) goes to Yellowstone National Park, finds a dried-up lake and befriends an eccentric radio personality." Cue trailer for 2012.

NadaNuff on Dec 9, 2009

To me, Nicholas Cage looks like Chris Angel after a few attempts of dry cleaning. But like a Vegas duvet, they just can't get him 100% clean. The rest is awesome. Aw. Some. Love the quick nod to the flood/brooms scene.

deadrobot on Dec 9, 2009

Did we really need the "sweet" at the end? Id LIKE to see Nicholas Cage in a movie where I am not laughing at his character .. but it rarely happens. Itll probably be entertaining at the least. I thought he was good (for him) in Knowing at least..

Kyle on Dec 9, 2009

I do wanna see this. But i have my doubts, the great one: Jay Baruchel. Really? I didnt saw nothing so good in his movies. Shia Labeouf would be a better choice. D.

D. on Dec 9, 2009

disney impresses once again, and i dont think anybody but cage could play that role.

AC on Dec 9, 2009

"A Pain That I'm Used To" by Depeche Mode is the song in the trailer. In case anyone was wondering.

dELVIS on Dec 9, 2009

Shia Lebeouf? are you stoney baloney bro? I am so sick of shia!

midnightlight on Dec 9, 2009

@#18 are you serious Shia Labeouf would be a better choice you must be crazy. i like Shia Labeouf but his not a better choice there are other young actors out there instead of him.

tazz on Dec 9, 2009

don't like nic cage much i think most of his films suck ass,but the effects look pretty fucking good,DR STRANGE ANYONE.

30 many movies is Nick Cage doing in the next 12 months?

Trey m on Dec 9, 2009

Cage's acting looks terrible in this (as it often does), as does the child. I must admit, though, the visuals do look fun.

Collin on Dec 9, 2009

bleh..... nothing there...

tms on Dec 9, 2009

Okay, first off, I'm very impressed by the visual effects in this trailer, everything looks beautiful. Now I must say, the casting looks terrible. Whoever thought Nicolas Cage as the Sorcerer (or any type of sorcerer period) was a good idea should immediately be fired or arrested for drug abuse. The trailer makes the movie look like it has absolutely nothing to do with the original animated short from Fantasia (aside from the single shot of Jay Baruchel throwing a broom), which is not necessarily a bad thing, but comparing the two we all know we wanted to see a scary old guy with a long beard. Instead we get to see jolly ol' saint Nic pretend to possess magical powers, which ultimately ends up looking like he's the lead singer a Creed music video. Now Jay Baruchel I don't as much of a problem with because I am very curious to see him get out there do something different. Loved him in Knocked Up and used to be a huge fan of Undeclared, so i'm excited to see him around again. Do I think he's the best choice? Nope. Who would I have chosen? Don't know. Not my job. With all of that aside, I will say that I am impressed by all of the visuals in this trailer, and that this does look like an amazing fantasy flick. As an animator I am very psyched to see this film, and I will definitely be seeing this one in theaters.

DanTheMan on Dec 9, 2009

I'm not so much impressed by the trailer nor Cages far. But what I'm totally impressed by is that Depeche Mode in the trailer. The song is from a few years back but finally someone has seen fit to use them in a movie.

Darren on Dec 9, 2009

Cineprog on Dec 9, 2009

DAMN!!! This looks awesome!!! I don't know why people bash Nicholas Cage because I just love the guy!! He looks really good in this movie and this might just be the break Nick needs right now. I really can't wait for this movie to come out. Just a side note: this would be an awesome RPG game!

Yuna on Dec 9, 2009

Look kind of kick ass! The music was awesome too. But this is about a broomstick developing it's own mind? O..o

Lar on Dec 9, 2009

Man this look great but why Nicolas cage =/

Notex on Dec 9, 2009

#33 don't forget him in Tropic Thunder. The fact that he held his own and had some memorable scenes in a movie choked full of huge named comedy stars is pretty impressive in and of itself.

Stevo on Dec 9, 2009

I guess I was really mistaken by the crowd here on FS.... people actually are exited about this!! REALLY?? Looks like another cheesy random hollywood movie full of cliche moments. Really people?????? I mean it doesnt look bad but to get exited and pumped for this?? Are the readers here 12 years old mostly?

Tomi on Dec 9, 2009

Nic Cage needs money, he's losing it maybe that means he'll actually start acting in his movies again and this looks like it could be good.

Xerxex on Dec 9, 2009

wait...Toby Kebbell is in this? Now i'm officaly in.

Xerxex on Dec 9, 2009

Tomi, Sometimes, once you've watched all the low budget art house films that showed you the tortured soul of a struggling artist destined for a life of misery to create beauty, you need to go and sit down and watch some mindless effects-laden nonsense, where the outcome is set in stone from the start. I think it looks okay, and that's pretty good from me because I think Disney are a bunch of soul sucking nazi's. Jay Baruchel is a good actor too.

Crapola on Dec 9, 2009

lmao. the end of that trailer "are you insane" followed by his silent response. nice. I'm interested. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually like Nic Cage in this better than that kid. he's freaking annoying. if nothing else, best Cage hairdo in a while! 😛

dave13 on Dec 9, 2009

I bet this movie will be one of nic cages best movies yet!!!.

Sean on Dec 9, 2009

Mihnea Parascan on Dec 9, 2009

well i was semi excited until i saw that trailer and again Cage destroys what could be a good movie

DoomCanoe on Dec 9, 2009

looks decent... but nic cage looked like tim burton.

The Bad: Too bad nick cage is in this movie. The Good: All the disney buying marvel haters can finally stfu.

meatcarnage on Dec 9, 2009

Two simple questions: Why did the Sorcerer raid Van Helsing's closet? Why is Nic Cage still getting so much work?

klausey on Dec 9, 2009

A conclusion to why nic cage was casted into this film, I assume disney liked what he did with the national treasures so here he is now ?

Vincent Cipollone on Dec 9, 2009

Ah, there's a dragon-I'm in! 🙂

David Banner on Dec 9, 2009

Saying that this is a retelling of The disney cartoon is just a way to sell tickets.

PJ H on Dec 9, 2009

I will withold judgement until I see it. last time I saw a disney recreation like this i said: "you mean to tell me that EDWARD SCISSORHANDS & LEGOLAS are starring in a movie based on that RIDE YOU FLOAT THROUGH???" and I ended up Blown away and loving it. That said, at first glance I get the feeling it could be Pirates or it could be That Jackie Chan/Jet Li Monkey King movie... Guess I'll find out when I see it.

wHiskey Tango... on Dec 9, 2009

thanks blaze! 'the music is "Depeche Mode - A Pain That I'm Used To" '

Out of all the neat mayhem in this trailer, the best is the last "Are you insane?" bit...really funny!

kitano0 on Dec 9, 2009

This looks way better than the Prince of Persia trailer. I will be watching this

Victor on Dec 9, 2009

I'm looking forward to seeing this. And Nick Cage is a legendary actor...I will see any movie simply because he is in it. Good work Disney!

The Man With No Name on Dec 9, 2009

Simply put...doesn't matter if Nick Cage is in this flick...If Disney can still make great looking movies 2010 will be a come back year for them. The visuals are stunning and finally magic that is truly impressive. None of that wand weaving crap with 3 snot nose kids with issues and a villain who takes 7 stories to do his evil sorcerer shtick!....(Ok ok i hope I wasnt too obvious of what story I'm referring too). I love movies with magic and this one will deliver! Nuff' said!

I'm loving Jay Baruchel.

giraffic on Dec 9, 2009

Ummm, did he say "aww Fu**!" At around 2:16? Or am I going crazy? Anyways, looks like alot of cool cgi.

Josh on Dec 9, 2009

The only problem is it's directed by Jon Turteltaub. He's a hit or miss director. Cage is cage. He's hit or miss. Now, take a hit or miss director and a hit or miss actor and what do you have? Answer: A hit or miss. Although Jay Baruchel is one funny guy. Trailer looks pretty good. Hopefully it's a fun movie. I'm tired of being a Nic Cage hater. I hope it does well for him.

Quanah on Dec 9, 2009

visuals look really good, but i hate Nic Cage... and btw, did Clive Owen voices his characteR? they sound exactly the same.

At first I thought this was some sort of sequel to the vampires assistant. (which was a great movie! pls tell me if there will be a sequel alex! It was Hilarious!!!) But i now realize it isnt.=( I will still see it but was hoping for TVA 2.

George on Dec 11, 2009

1) I actually like Nic Cage, and it pisses me off that he's been in so much shite lately. Go see the new Bad Lieutenant movie and if you think Cage sucked in that then you're fucking nuts. Cage as a strung-out crack-head dirty cop with a Magnum stuck in his pants throughout the film... fucking perfect. 2) This looks like it'll be about as good as Dragonball: Evolution. This is faux-dark... the kind of slick, emo-goth visual style that's been spewing out into movies for a LONG time now. Se7en, Fight Club, The Dark Knight, The Prestige... those movies were actually 'dark'. This, Watchmen, Ghost Rider and Max Payne aren't really 'dark' movies, they just dimmed the lights for some of the shots. It's not the same sort of vibe at all. It's not a completely bad look, honestly. Some movies have pulled it off quite well. The Potter films, for instance. It's just that the over-reliance on visual effects for no real reason other than to just be flashy, and then throwing those shots into the trailer instead of showing off actual story or skill... Obviously they're just pandering to people who only give a shit about effects and being able to say "OH SHIT!!" whenever something 'totally awesome' happens on screen. That's fine - I have nothing against that sort of film - but it's dangerous to set out to make a film like that. The odds of your movie being a flop goes up because that sort of film has to keep layering on the effects and action and shit. After the whole room gets morphed into a totally different room with a neat, screen-filling effect, the audience isn't going to be 'amazed' by the more subtle effects anymore. If that room scene happens at the beginning of the film, and nothing that spectacular happens again until the very end or at all, then this movie is going to be a huge flop. Money-shots are supposed to come after all the fapping has taken place.

Squiggly_P on Dec 11, 2009

Could nic cage be roland of gilead??????????????

John on Dec 11, 2009

Can we say this is a redemption of the multiple lame movies that Cage did recently?

Fisherr on Dec 12, 2009

I got to say this is the first trailer in a while that Cage did not look ridiculous. I like Cage, but I don't think he sells movies really well and looks silly (to put it simple) in trailers. I liked the look of this one though. So here's hoping it doesn't disapoint.
