Must Watch: First Trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes!
by Alex Billington
May 18, 2009
Source: Yahoo
We've been waiting to see this and it's finally here - take a look at Guy Ritchie's version of Sherlock Holmes, as lead by Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Yahoo has debuted the first trailer, which will also be showing in front of Terminator Salvation this week. This actually looks a lot better than I remember from ShoWest. I really love the style and the action and intensity. I think they really ramped up the excitement and pulled out some of the comedy, which makes it a great fit for all those who are seeing Terminator this weekend. Anyway, I think I've said enough. Just fire this trailer up and let us know what you think!
Watch the first trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes:
You can also watch the trailer for Sherlock Holmes in High Definition on Yahoo
Detective Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his stalwart partner Dr. Watson (Jude Law) engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a mystical occult evil nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.
Sherlock Holmes is directed by British auteur Guy Ritchie, of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Revolver, and RocknRolla previously. The screenplay was co-written by Guy Ritchie, Michael Johnson, Anthony Peckham, and Simon Kinberg, and is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's characters first introduced in 1887. Warner Bros is bringing Sherlock Holmes to theaters starting on Christmas Day, December 25th.

Haha that was great, I wasn't expecting that! Finally a Sherlock Holmes that I might actually enjoy. Plus I didn't know Rachel McAdams was in it, hell yeah! I'm there for sure, even tho I was disappointed by RockNRolla, I'm on bored for this one.

Sherlock Holmes as a billy club wushu fighting D&D Rogue class, with a dashing prissy Dr. Watson....This is so far from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic master of deductions. This film SHOULD be called " Guy Ritchie's : Sherlock Holmes ". I love Downey Jr. in anything and even more adore Jude's style as an actor...if the villain is a solid one and I get an "Elementry my dear Watson" I'll be sold. I know Robert & Jude will be good in the film *SO NO HATERS ON MY COMMENT ;)* I'm just not sold on the overall direction of the film...Sorry, one trailer won't do it for me this time around. I'll have to wait and see the whole film before passing judgement.

This looks GREAT as a movie, but i don't know how much it is "Sherlock Holmes." Almost feel like it can stand by itself without the name. This was a very action based trailer... but where does the detective/mystery solving/deductive-reasoning come in? Looks like a fine balance between comedy and action though, looking forward to this one.

Don't know... I can't really say. Yes, it looks pretty good, but also the Rockanrolla trailer made me say "wow, this looks pretty good" and the actual movie ended up being a total crap.... Honestly, What would be the last Guy Ritchie really really really great movie?? My answer is: Lock, stock and two smoking barrels. After that we are talking about, what, other 4 mediocre movies? The numbers are against this movie! But anyway, let's hope for a good film...

Wow! Maybe for lack of in-depth knowledge on who is Sherlock Holmes and what he's capable of... I never expected S.Holmes to be such a james-bond-jason-bourne-brad-pitt-from-snatch type of character. I hope the movie will deliver the aspect why S.Holmes is S.Holmes, which is the detective/mystery solving/deductive-reasoning one... He's the "first" CSI if I may say and that's what I'm hoping for... the action sequence as a plus is not something that I could complain about though... Re: Trailer - I love the fist fight... It's like watching Discovery's Time Warp...

I am just so excited about this movie. It looks fantastic!!!!!! As always Robert Downey Jr. looks great!! He also is very talented. I really love the British accent. I loved his British accent in Chaplin also. He's like the man of many voices! It's so great he is able to reinvent himself so easily. I can't wait the movie looks fantastic!

It looks like a really good movie, but I really hate the trailer. I don't know why, something about it just bothers me. But I'd rather it be a good movie with a bad trailer than a bad movie with a good trailer.

I can't help but think this is a joke... shouldn't really be called Sherlock Holmes in my opinion. Might as well call it James Bond goes back in time. Meh that's really my only gripe with it, looks like a good action movie though.

OMG I lol'd at the part in the trailer when Robert Downey Jr. picks up the tiny hammer, and the guy he's facing has the HUGE-ASS one. This looks like an awesome blend of hotness (McAdams), comedy, fight-scenes, mystery, and explosions. I'm onboard, and honestly until we see some more of Avatar, Cameron can suck on this.

hahaha I'm a big fan of S.Holmes stories, and this is so far from the original character, Holmes' charm is more abour his deductive abilities than his action-hero acrobatics, although there are some fights here and there in the books, yet I can't remember any explosion... but still, I kinda liked this trailer, seems like it's gonna be a really cool movie

Heh, finally a Holmes flick with shirtless fistfighting! Conan Doyle would be proud. Reading through the original stuff, I'm gonna have to say this is closer to the source material than it should be allowed to be. =P But just far off enough to seem like a pretty entertaining action movie, hey?

I have to say, this just solidifies how brilliant Jeremy Brett was with the original work. They skewed from time to time but they stayed true to Holmes. Closest thing to approximate Holmes lately has been House( whole show is based on Sherlock Holmes including the substance abuse ). I like RJD, I like Jude Law, and I'm a fan of Guy Ritchie, but Sherlock Holmes this is not. Victorian era Bond, maybe. The one thing I will praise them for is not making Watson a bumbling sidekick-oaf.

I had no trouble. anyways, I love Downey Jr in his films, and will finally see him in the Soloist tonight, but this isn't Sherlock Holmes. this is an action movie. not a detective story. I'm sure it will be great though, but its not Holmes as I read and adored as a child.

This looks like a fun movie but obviously Mr. Ritchie has never read a Sherlock Holmes story or watched any of the movies.... I'm sorry, but Robert Downey, Jr. could have made a great Sherlock Holmes, had he been given the chance. This is not the character at all. Based on the trailer, I'm greatly disappointed. Don't call this Sherlock Holmes - it is NOT.

Look, it's okay, but seriously this is NOT SHERLOCK HOLMES. This is using a name to get people to go see a movie. Holmes used deduction and observation, and though was a massive cokehead (hence brilliant casting of Downey, Jr) rarely fought anyone. The proper movie would be more like a CSI episode without the BS and just going through the scene and players involved. And Watson as a bad-ass? Frankly, I'm really bothered with this. It's gutting an world-renowned character and making him the opposite of what Doyle envisioned. I don't mind taking a bit of creative freedom, but this is like making Atticus Finch a closet homosexual or making Allan Quartermain a black guy.

Awesome trailer. Wrote about this on my blog. I'm a huge, huge Holmes fan and so excited to see the whole film. Not so happy for Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler though. Imagined her more of a Natalie Portman or Scarlett Johanson.

I half expected Downey Jr. and Jude Law to start singing 'Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do?' at the end of this trailer. Maybe this looks like a decent buddy action flick (set in a period England), but I can't see much to do with Sherlock Holmes besides the name.

Horrible. Sherlock Holmes was NEVER a manwhore. Somebody, somewhere along the line decided to make the character more like the actor. I believe Robert Downey, Jr. is a depraved manwhore. Read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works and you wouldn't believe Sherlock Holmes is a manwhore. I hate it when Hollywood adds something to a story, like sex, that does nothing for the plot. Sex was key in Basic Instinct. Sex has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes, whose chararcter is an anal retentive intellectual who succeeds in solving mysteries or crimes whereas other detectives don't because he is smarter or more attentive than they are. Perhaps Guy Ritchie should have explored why a guy that bright is solving crimes instead of trying to make money by being an industrialist in the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

Not only was Holmes NOT a womanizer but he was also the exact opposite of one! He thoroughly distrusted women as a whole as clearly stated throughout many of the stories. He also was not involved with Ilene Adler at all romantically, also quoted in the books. And not only have those facts ruined this movie but also the simple fact that this is a disgusting modernized vision of heroism translated into fighting and action, rather than the intelligence and deductive abilities that characterized Sherlock Holmes entirely. This version has drained any originality of the Sherlock Holmes characters and replaced them with the mainstream cinema's dreadfully over repeated action movies containing only fighting, sex, and unwitty humor. And finally, what in the world is with Downey's accent? HORRIBLE.

Not impressed. Substituting Jackie Chan type humor for what should be an intellectual "whodunit" does nothing for me. Sherlock is all about mental savvy and acuity but it appears they're going in a whole new direction. That approach is not what I want from a SH movie. I'll probably see it and hopefully I'll be surprised and like it. One never knows! Go Toledo ROCKETS!
