Must Watch: First Trailer for Star Wars Geek Drama '77'
I'm not sure why everyone is so fascinated with making movies about Star Wars recently, but I don't mind, I'll see every last one, I'm a big Star Wars geek. I've actually heard of the movie 77 before, back when it was previously known as 5-25-77 - which, for those who don't know, is the exact day that A New Hope first came out. Unlike the movie Fanboys, this is more of a coming-of-age drama than a road trip comedy. There's also a lot of great movie references, as the story is about a wannabe filmmaker whose life changes the moment he sees Star Wars. Every true self-proclaimed geek should be watching this trailer right now.
Watch the first trailer for Patrick Read Johnson's 77:
For more info on the film, check out the official website: 77-movie.com
Alienated, hopeful-filmmaker Pat Johnson's (played by John Francis Daley) epic story about growing up in rural Illinois, falling in love, and becoming the first fan of the movie that changed everything.
77 is both written and directed by Patrick Read Johnson, the very same filmmaker that the movie is about, who previously directed Spaced Invaders, Baby's Day Out, Angus, and is credited for the story on Dragonheart. The film doesn't have a distributor or a release date yet, so we're not sure when or where it'll debut, although it could be at Fantastic Fest. Stay tuned for updates on 77 as they arrive! Thoughts?

Jesus Christ, what a pile of garbage. Just let Star Wars go. Honestly, let it go.

I'm kind of...interested to day the least. That comment about "To you, life is what happens when you're tired of movies" is exactly, 100% how I go about my life. Cannot wait to see this. Hopefully it will be better than Fanboys, which I could not stand to watch. Sci-Fi related fart-jokes are not my cup of tea. This, on the other hand, looks like it has a real storyline behind it. Also, the kid wanting to make movies, is so damn close to home, for me at least.

V, Fanboys was more than that, but I agree not too much more. As a young filmmaker I know the struggles behind all of this. Really. And I love Star Wars, my favorite film of all time and I mean of all time is Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. It was the perfect film. This film looks incredible and I know I will love this. I cannot wait and have officially started my counter for this film.

This seems a lot more like a film about film buffs then it does Star Wars geeks.

Looks great if you ask me!

Dude, is that the stoner guy from the Dell commercials from back in the day?

I'll see it for nostalgia. To remember a time when I was the only person in my class who knew or cared about Star Wars. I saw it on my 11th birthday, 5-26-77. Back then there was the trailer on tv and that was it. I saw that trailer only a couple of times and I knew the only thing I wanted for my birthday was to see that movie. It's hard now to envision that time. I guess if you were older you knew some things about the movie, not like today but a little, before it came out but as a little kid I knew nothing, just those trailers. Also the Star Wars vs Star Trek geek war begins, classic.

This looks really good. I was only 4 in '77 so I wasn't in on all the pre-star wars hype so this would be interesting to see.
Jim on May 26, 2009
Rene is right, I was watching this and was thinking I seen this a LONG time ago. I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but I don't really care to see a semi-autobiographical movie about the director of Spaced Invaders and Baby's Day out.
TheManWithNoName on May 26, 2009
There should be a restriction that a trailer can not be longer than 1:30 Minutes tops. Maybe then they'll stop trying to squeeze the whole movie in that little timeframe. I'm probably going to see this just for my love of "Freaks & Geeks". Sam Weir! Whooo!

This certainly isn't the first trailer for '77, nor is it new. The film's been around (in a completed form) for two years now - just trying to get distribution etc. As the above commenter noted. Oh, you guys 😉 Next thing you know we'll be getting a "brand new, first trailer" for Trick R Treat
Adam Frazier on May 26, 2009
This looks awesome, I was born in 77 so I never experienced this first hand only the subsequent movies but it looks like a really fun trip back in time.

Not half as bad as the comments make it seem. Looks a lot better than fanboys, that is for sure.

I remember seeing this on IMDB about 5 years ago, because I was wondering what happened to the girl from Jurassic Park. The guy from Freaks and Geeks and later Bones is more on the side of Freaks and Geeks in this, agewise. This must be at least 3 years old. If the trailer is longer than 2:30, there's a problem.
Greedo the Rodian on May 26, 2009
I'll see it. I like Daley. It looks interesting. Would I spend 12 bucks? Eh. I have a feeling that forty, fifty, sixty years from now...we're going to have Memorial Day parades that have one float featuring real life people that watched the original Star Wars movie in 1977, like their heros of something. I mean, I get it. The move was an awakening for a lot of people, but enough already. I shudder to think those same forty years from now if we're going to see movies about the first time some dweeb saw 'The Matrix'.
Michael Field on May 26, 2009
Every true self proclaimed geek knew about this movie and saw the first trailer before the movie had a distributor. Oh and not every geek is into Star Wars. How much of a hardcore geek are you Billington? You wear it on your skin? You a collector? Got posters hanging up? Action figures? I'd be willing to bet that every REAL hardcore Star Wars geek laughs at your generalization of what Hard Core is. So what is it Billington? What's your claim to being a HARDCORE Star Wars fan?
Kent of Daftbot on May 26, 2009
Why don't they have a movie about the day some dweeb saw "Porky's" for the first time.
clippers350 on May 26, 2009
Looks good - definitely a coming-of-age pull to it.
Nick Sears on May 26, 2009
Kent of Daftbot - shut the fuck up. You're insulting a guy by questioning his hardcore geekiness? Who the fuck asks that? Since when you do you need online hardcore geek validation? Do YOU need some validation??? Do you have all your ripped underwear from wedgies through high school pinned to wall? Drop the sad act and stop starting shit just to entertain yourself and bring attention that you obviously depend on. I don't know how hardcore of a geek Alex is, but I can tell you that his site / career / bloggin / vloggin /etc is doing a fuckload better than your lame site. Stop complaining and take care of your problems.. fucking clown shoes.
Nick Sears on May 26, 2009
this looks like piss, but it got a lot of sweet comments to respond to! like #32 - is an ass hole, he thinks he is the super geek when even I (a semi geek) could own his ass in anything Star Wars. you's a bitch, calling people out because you want to be seen as the super nerd, ill shut you down any day. stupid ass bitch.... slut ha #33 has an awesomely hilarious point. and i stand with #13. Baby's day out sucks nuts and so does this movie!
DoomCanoe on May 26, 2009
Oh god... This movie is awesome. I was born in 1977 and I was like 1 year old.. but I FELT about the same things as this Pat Johnson did when I was about 6 or 7 years old and saw RETURN OF THE JEDI in the 1980's. There was something about that time that inspired not really geeks, but creatives in general to TRY and make these things with pencil, paper, swimming pools, gorilla suits, plastic scale models..... But while STAR WARS is the lynchpin, it wasn't the only one. The times after 1977 were chockful of ultra-creative films from a thematic perspective.... Ghosts, Time Travel, Aliens, Spaceships, and even before LOTR became cool there was that spell with the Fantasy-themed movies that didn't do so well. It takes me back to the time when I read an article in Childcraft about filming with miniature submarines and it got me thinking about how much fun it would be to try it myself. Fun times. Fun times.

She will NEVER compete with Star Wars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! first of all.. and that line "there are no cliques in the movie theaters, no jocks or geeks" etc.. classic... looks interesting..I can relate to a lot of that...although I was only 5 when I saw star wars in the theater...

Interesting trailer. I am a big fan of sci-fiction flicks but I will be sure to get some opinion from people who have seen it before I try it.
