Must Watch: Phenomenal Trailer for Duncan Jones' Moon!
by Alex Billington
April 9, 2009

Sony Picture Classics has debuted the first trailer for Duncan Jones' Moon, the brilliant indie sci-fi film starring Sam Rockwell that first premiered at Sundance earlier this year. This is one of the best trailers I think I've ever seen for an indie. Not only is the big reveal still kept fairly secret (you don't have to worry too much), but they use Clint Mansell's beautiful score, and it's overall a fantastic two minute summation of one of the best films of the year. I gave the film an 8.5 out of 10 at Sundance, saying that it's "by no means a sci-fi epic, but it is gritty, dark, lightly comical, and thoroughly entertaining." Check out the trailer below!

Astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his intelligent computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of Helium 3, a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.
Moon is directed by first-time filmmaker Duncan Jones, a former ad exec turned filmmaker of only a sci-fi short from 2000 called Whistle previously. The original story was written by Jones, and the screenplay was written by Nathan Parker. This first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it was bought by Sony Pictures Classics. Moon will arrive in limited theaters starting on June 12th this year.

The initial premise reminds me of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and then it goes into something similar to Sunshine...I can't wait!

Yeah wtf do they clone people with the same memories and stuff and just have the same people talking to a bunch of them at the same time? That way when 3years is just they can just kill them instead of having to pay to send them back? Weird, looks awesome!

Woah, having watched 2001 recently, I could see a lot of references to it - the tone of the computer voice, the white-colouring of the spaceship, and even the video-call with the young-girl. Another vibe was from another movie I have recently seen, Solaris, especially with the woman sat in the chair and the suggestion of him going mad. Overall, looks really good β but how long are us Brits going to have to wait for itβ¦

Reminds me more of Solaris in those scenes with him macking on the space babe. I love Sam Rockwell, so this is definitely on my Must See list!

Looks good but I suspect a clone plot as well. Kind of depressing as I wouldn't rush out to see this now and would wait for netflix. Still, I hope to remember it and watch it later.

kinda wish they hadnt given the reveal away that there are two of him and thats whats buggin the guy out. they could have done the same trailer with all the same shots except that one of him unconscious in the vehicle and it would still work. it would be as if he found someone else. dont know why they would reveal that in the trailer. oh well. still looks good. will see because im curious about daddy bowie genes.

Finally - a decent sci-fi movie that's not about aliens or some other Michael Bay robot crap. There needs to be more young, up and coming directors making these kinds of movies. And Hollywood studios need to realize that there's a built in audience for science fiction that's smart and thought prevoking. I bet this becomes a cult hit.

This is my favorite film of '09 so far. Saw it at Sundance with Billington and haven't stopped talking about it. However, it's a little weird that one of the quotes from the trailer is from Roger Friedman. :oP

This looks like it could be one of the best Sci-Fi flicks in a long long time. Sam Rockwell has pretty much become one of those rare actors where you can say "Oh, it's a Sam Rockwell movie, you know it's gonna be good."

Besides 2001 and Solaris, it also reminds me of an early 70's sci fi flick called Silent Running with Bruce Dern.

I totally agree with 49...it looks like a re-mash of 2001. Solaris and Silent Running with a touch of the Thing thrown in for good measure.

looks good but not based on reality. There's alien structures on the moon. I wish they'd make a movie about that. But that would never happen would it. Suppress the truth and keep us ignorant.

Can't be a time-travel issue. Otherwise, the one he found wouldn'tve asked "Why does he look like me"? If it was a future version, the future him would remember finding....himself, in the past. God I hate temporal mechanics.

It made me think of Tom Hanks in Cast Away.
Joel on May 28, 2009

actually it could be time travel. The future him ,he finds, may have left the moon and ended up back on the moon due to some future event, and never would expected to have been thrown back in the past, hence he wouldnt expect to see his past self still there.

Sam Rockwell is my superstar, and the plot sounds amazing, I just hope I can watch it as soon as possible.

why do most of sci fi movie (especially space exploration related) always show things goes wrong? (which overtook the whole plot of the story and the whole idea of sci fi to it). I mean, if i wanna see murders, thriller i can just tune in to current day movie.. instead of having those as the main plot sets in a sci fi settings.
